My dad smokes ciggeretts, any sugestions?

My dad does dope but thats not what im worried to. the problem is my dad smokes ciggies and he smokes a lot, around a pack/pack half a day(20 in a pack). i always hated it but now i see its getting REALLY bad hes been borrowing money of me, my brother and sister to buy ciggierettes. I hope your happy you fucking tobbacco companies!

worse still my mum smokes when she is Really stressed but she doesn't buy her own, ever, only smokes my dads. so not only is it making a habit(smoking when stressed) it has a physical addiction for mum as well.
so lets have a little summary of the problems:

- my dad inhales most of his money for himself that he could use on somthing to enjoy himself
- he coughs up tar or phegm( i never see him but i can hear him)
- hes passive smoking my sister, me, my brother and mum
- he suffers standard withdrawl when he stops
- his lungs are probably %40 gone

look i really need some sugestions how to help him. if i throw away his ciggies, he buys more. its REALLY annoying.

why don't you do the honorable thing & buy him some cigs before he runs out, then he won't have to ask for money kids:stoned:

Does your Dad even want to quit cigs? You know you can't make someone give up but you can help them once they make that choice. I found a really good called "Breaking the Chains" which really helped me when I qiut nicotine its an e-book.

both my mom and dad use to smoke alot (mom smokes 1 1/2 packs dad smokes 2 1/2 packs), my mom quit with something called wellbutran ... it worked realy well and she quit cold turke and hasnt smoked in 6 years but my dad refuses to quit and still smokes a ridiculas amount ofcgs a day. if your dad doesnt want to quit you arent going to make him, i suggest you dont buy him cigs next time he asks you but instead offer him something to stop withdrawel such as welbutran or maybe something else you have heard good stuff about

i'll be trying the wellbutrin, i'm optimistic:thumbsup:

I'll socially smoke and it seems to be going fine for the past year or so, definatly not physically addicted to them. I smoke maybe... 6-7 cigs a weekend then go the week without smoking with ease. But my friend though... hes smokin about a pack a day and you can really tell when he coughs. It sounds like a shitty car tryin to start lol, has that raspyness to it. Cigs are definatly not a good thing to be addicted to... I guess i'm only lucky to escape it thus far, should probably just stop.

i smoked reds for about ten years. the only way to quit that worked for me was to litteraly disgust myself out of smoking. this was what worked for me
1. don't empty ashtrays- you won't belive how fast they fill up
2. any time you want a smoke, go for a reburn. take a drag of that 3/4 finished stinky smelly butt.
3. if you really start going nuts and this isn't working a friend of mine started out rolling about 10 joints every morning and everytime he wanted a cig he had a joint instead. worked well for him

zyban is the form of wellbutrin that they use for quitting cigs. I was on wellbutrin for depression once

There was a program a couple of weeks ago on Tv about stopping smoking. They were going to try and smoke and smoke and smoke. They would keep smoking for a couple of days. Then by the end of it they would just be so disgusted by fags that they gave up. I dont know if it worked but you could always give it a try.

ya...they have to want to quit...i hate when people force stuff on others like its the best idea(in this case it might be) espessally when people force religious beliefs!

I quit smoking, twice! But I haven't smoked a taylor made in at least a few years now. It was hard, very hard. After seeing all the money I saved though, that was more than enough motivation for me to quit. Plus, seeing your best friend lose his mother at only age 47 die of lung cancer really hit home.

My advice, have gum. Lots and lots of gum. Whever I got an urge, I just chewed gum really hard until my mind was occuppied again with something else. Or, just start cutting down on your smoking. If you smoke half a pack a day, gradually cut out a few extra ciggs. a day and in a few months, you should be smoking much less than that. Try sucking on Suckers. I hear that helps as well.

It takes A LOT of willpower to go along with this though. I mean a lot. It will be on your mind for the first few weeks, but after the first 2 weeks, things should get easier.

I don't know what to do about your dad though. Good luck.

Tell your father that a research scientist, friend of yours, told you that he's seen a lot of research, recently, that suggest if you smoke cigarettes then you should smoke weed as a natural lung expectorant.

Hey thanks for the suggestions. my dad wants to quit but he is always stressed and busy and it is a habit now. lunch break smoke, after work smoke, before bed smoke. so his body expects it at those times. sorta like not eating at lunch you feel really hugry even if you stuffed yourself at breakfast.

i suppose the only thing good that came out of this is that i will never smoke and either will my sister or brother... and ill beat the living shit out of any of my friends that smoke.

I smoked for 20 yrs before I managed to quit. It was *very* tough - it took about 6 mos before I wasnt hit by cravings. Nicotine is very addictive. Nagging smokers, showing them horrible pix, lecturing them - being self righteous (yeah you!) none of this does any good expect to piss both of you off. It usually takes a lot of work and emotional energy for a long time smoker to quit. Some can quit without much trouble but for most its a long painful slog - often several painful slogs because most ppl quit several times before it sticks. If your dad makes up his mind to do it - give him all the help you can - until then stay off his back. Sheesh, last time I looked it was about $4 a pack - so your dad is smoking like $6 a day. If you can afford weed you can afford cigs - stop sounding like the fucking church lady!

yea im sorry to be a fucking nag. i mean worrying about the fact that my dad is killing himself slowly and painfully!! how could i not just accept that! yea im sure that if your dad was on crack people would call you a church lady to try to get him off it! and i know that extreme but same princable only cracks quicker.

Just curious..why did you say that he is passive smoking your mom? She does smoke correct? Only when stressed..how often is that? Just wondering how your so concerned about your dad smoking but not your mom? Even it's only when she is "stressed". It's like you are blaming him for her smoking? I don't get that one....:confused:

it's his life, and he chooses to smoke.

True, i do know my mum should not smoke and that she does. but like anything you will be more likely to do it if its there. how many people have never done coke just decide to get up and snort some? not many. its normally because your dealer says want some or a friend pushes you. i don't know how often my mum smokes but i know she does.

and yes your right jeff it is his decision. it is also a crack heads decision to smoke and a heroin junkie to inject themselves. i suppose we should let that be. and i suppose you agree with suicide since thats basicly what smoking is just much slower and more painful their decision! lets see if you say that if your friend is on the edge of a building...

Vengeance, the math is bogus. You cant just sum an income stream or expenditure stream over 10 years to estimate its value. For example the mortgage payments on a house over 30 years add up to much more than the principal value of loan. So $10/week is NOT the same as $520 either at the start OR at the end of the year. Its a messy calculation involving interest rates. Sure it does add up over time, though not as quickly as you estimate but so does everything else. For a grownup to spend $6 per day to do what he wants is perfectly reasonable (assuming your family is not poor). What about all the $$ you are going to spend on weed from now till you are , say , 50? Its big bucks Ill bet. Your Dad is addicted to nicotine but weed is not addictive so whats your excuse? Have you gone through all the nickel and dime expenditures in your house to make sure they are absolutely necessary or did you just land on cigarettes because it supports the Church Lady's agenda? ;) Its quite possible to manage on a diet of beans and rice - keep your house at 50 deg in the winter, 90 in the summer, walk or use public transportation and get all your entertainment from the TV or the public library. You'd be a wealthy man by the time you are 40 - where are you on this thrift plan? I smoked for 18 years before I was able to quit. But after quiting (now 20 yrs ago) I never noticed that I had any extra money to spend. This kind of comparison is a scaling trick - a mathematical sleight of hand. Its also done the other way. The encycopedia salesman will tell you that the cost is less than a cup of coffee a day.

Then there's the health issue. Of course you are concerned for your Dad and good on ya for that! But he knows the facts. And I am sure they bother him. Yet he doesnt stop? What good do you expect nagging to do? It just makes him feel bad and I dont think you get a kick out of it either. Smoking or not he is not going to be around forever - why not enjoy his company and make his life pleasant instead of being a PITA? I am not saying you shouldnt try to get him to stop - but nagging is not the way. Even if your dad was a crackhead, nagging is NOT the way.
