Well not too hard not too soft, you want a nice even burn but not to slow as it will go out before the bowl is finished.
for me it's as hard as i can without the lighter going out which is probably somewhere in between soft and hard i suppose... really really tough to describe without showing lol

It all depends on the piece, how tightly it's packed, and how rough the smoke is.
In a good bong stuffed with dank Sativa and a glass screen, I pull as hard as I can; I won't suck any of the weed through, and I don't have to worry about coughing my lungs out.
If, however, it's shitty weed (or a really thick Indica) through a small dry piece with a big hole and no screen, obviously I'm going to pull a lot softer.
I haven't smoked in a while, but I liked a good amount of oxygen in my hits...
this is my idea.. i'm actually using a vacuum cleaner, jus to clear up any misconceptions.. i think my aparatus will hold lyk a 1/8th.. cus of the power of the bong.. idk yet... ideas.. questions? comments?
make sure you dont vacuum up the smoke...that would be a total waste of the herb

I had the same idea...
this is how I envisioned it
Use a pump instead (take a tube from a vacuum, and make a something rubbter attached to a stick or string..something that will keep the air in..pull SLOWLY..to get the most smoke...
i made one of those tho..
oooh... if i add water, the pull would have to be harder.. that might equalize the pull from the vacuum cleaner..
