Cheney accidentally shoots hunting partner

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a 78-year-old man while the two of them were hunting on a ranch in South Texas, Cheney's office said.


Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride confirmed a news account that Cheney had turned to shoot quail that had just been flushed but instead peppered Harry Whittington with shotgun pellets, striking one side of his body.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm (2330 GMT) on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch, where the vice president is a frequent visitor, according to an eyewitness account in the local Corpus Christi Caller-Times newspaper.


Katharine Armstrong, owner of the ranch, said Whittington was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial by ambulance, the newspaper reported.

Armstrong said Cheney, 65, had not noticed that Whittington had approached him from behind. "Nobody wants this to happen, but it does," she told the Caller-Times.

Armstrong said the vice president's secret service security detail had tended to the wounded man, according to the newspaper.

"The vice president this afternoon visited with Mister Whittington," said McBride, who vouched for the report but would not say whether their meeting had taken place at the hospital.

Cheney's office did not disclose the incident when it took place.

CNN television, citing a witness, said that Whittington had "never lost consciousness."

The wounded man was "doing well and in stable condition," hospital spokesman Peter Banko told CNN.

The vice president would return to Washington later Sunday, NBC News reported.

Whittington, an attorney, gave the maximum 2,000 dollars to the 2004 reelection campaign of Cheney and US President George W. Bush, according to the Center for Responsive Politics non-profit organization.

In January 2004, a Cheney duck-hunting trip in Louisiana with US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia drew accusations of impropriety because the high court was set to hear a case involving the vice president's energy task force.

In late 2003, Cheney drew criticism for a pheasant hunt at an exclusive club in Pennsylvania, when he reportedly shot 70 of the birds, because of a news report that they had been released from nets.

true story, my dad litterally knew dick cheney back when my father was a LT. colonel, my dad also happens to be a lutheran minister, he doesnt swear much, but he will call dick cheney a huge asshole knowing him personally he says that the guy is just a plain out jack ass

I agree with vaporhead-- this is arguably the most influential and powerful man in the western world (we all know that even GWB listens to Cheney), and has the responsibilities inherent in that office-- and can't even look at what he's shooting before doing so?

Actually, he's in stable position, and will probably be out of the hospital tomorrow. ....It does seem a little fishy though.

I think that he did it on purpose to send the guy a warning, maybe the guy is tied to Haliburton <sp?> or some other organization that Cheney is "not" involved with. Maybe he was just sending him the warning and told him that it's a secret, or the next bullet is going down.

Wheres the humor in Mr. Cheney having 24 hour medical personnel available? That is just expensive..and who is paying? We are..and I just don't understand hunting anyways lemonboy....unless its for shoes.:)

Exactly, if you get seperated from your hunting partners, (in this case it was to retrieve a bird from the tall grass) when you rejoin the group you announce yourself so everyone knows where you are. A friend of mine got peppered in almost the exact same scenario because he didn't let everyone know where he was. I know a guy who peppered a partner because the guy ducked behind some bushes. If he had been standing in plain sight it wouldn't have happened. I announce myself even in short grass and I've never been peppered. :D

TIP: Avoid novelty hats with feathers or stuffed antlers while hunting! :D
