Anyone seen that movie "one fly over the cuckoo's nest" with Jack Nicholso in it. A story about him going to a nut house even though hes not mentally disabled, and gets to know the people their ect. and end's up being turned into a vegtible? a very touching movie IMO :( People tend to make fun of mental people, but i feel sorry for them, when i watch that movie it make's me sad and angry because the people their seemed to be treated like they were no body's but i always felt that they can understand thing's. But just at a very different perspective. I don't think they're dumb, i just think they have problems communicating with other people.

I'm actually just reading that book now and I saw the movie on Friday. I guess I agree with you that mentally ill people don't get great treatment --especially in the past when the book was written. Ie. Harding, I think, the one with the hot wife is actually gay, and that's his only "mental illness" but he still gues treated like crap.

That was a good movie. How could someone make fun of somebody that has no control, no choice in the matter. The same thing could happen to you just walking home from school or work. You're hit by a car and bam your f****d up, mental. Wouldn't feel good to be made fun of would it? That is if you even know your being made fun of. I prefer to make fun of "normal idiots, stupid people, and women that don't look in the mirror before leaving home.:) :stoned:

Well, iv seen people make fun of mentally disabled people before, he's not in a mental home but he still has trouble and he gets hasseled quite a bit and taken advantage of alot which pisses me off.
But this guy is'nt that unfit to be in a mental home tho, he deftinly has alot more understanding and he can communicate better.

okay, well in my oppinon, mental or crazy people are just people who understand the lunacy and pointlessness of life, and so they do not act the same as us ignorant "not crazy" people.
honestly, when i tripped on shrooms and discovered life for the first time, i was literally insane for about 4 hours. so i know what its like to be a rambling, smiling, laughing, stumbling, lunatic.

It is not good karma to make fun of mental people. I'm glad it pisses you off. It is just not right. It is one thing to laugh with them another to laugh at them. It's a shame. :(

Yeah, if my class this guy who think's hes really hard (he's just words, i piss him off all the time and he does fuck all) was trying to get him to trade his MP3 player for his, and the guy who had the mental problems (he's not SO bad, he's still capible of thinking for himself, he just struggles quite alot at thinking for himself) had a better MP3 player, and i KNEW he was trying to rip him off, cus i heard him say it to this slutty chav girl, and he was trying to convince him to trade but i could tell he did'nt want to because he kept hesitating but i don't think he wanted to say no because he was scared of this guy. It just pisses me off how he takes advantage of him because he's weaker than him, and i don't even think this guy is tough, one time he threw my bottle of water in the bin and i said "you fucking prick" and he was like "YOU WOT?!" "i'll bang you" and i was like "lol, yeah. w/e" and he just pissed off. He proberly knows some people tho. But this guy with mental problems is a pretty funny guy, i don't mean i laugh at his disability but he cracks jokes off quite a bit that make me laugh. he's really dirty minded LOL!

One flew over the cuckoo's nest is one of my all time favs... Stellar performance from Jack and I loved the Indian
When I was growing up my mom told me horror stories about retarded kids being hidden from public to avoid embarrassment to their families... When I was young and came upon a retarded person my mother would say "There but for the grace of god go I" That saying stuck and is instilled in me...
There is a retarded youth working in a supermarket I go to... The boy is always smiling, stops pushing his carts to wave and say hello,he has more sense and decency than the jerk in the SUV that almost runs you over in the same parking lot...

I've had very similar thoughts. In my experience, it's not that they people have problems communicating, it's just that the people they communicate with have trouble understanding. In some case the voice inside your head speaks louder and clearer than the your speaking voice. It's all in the interpretation. It's almost like speaking in riddles. Now, don't get me wrong--we all know there are people out there who need help...professional help.
In my mind, we're all mentally challenged, platonically speaking. We all have moments where someone doesn't understand another. It's the same for people diagnosed with schizophrenia, but frequently occurring. All in all, we all try to make the best of what our life is. When you put it that way, they're just doing what they have to do. I'd like to think that even "crazy" people are constantly trying to better themselves, but due to serious traumas to the brain the problems keep re-occuring. They're in a loop. Them, like us have moments of a piece of mind. There are triggers all around us waiting to pull us back into our shell (brain). Some people can let go, some can't. It's better for people in mental clinics to be where they're at, to be constantly sedated. They're specimens, no offense. With so much on thier minds, however tragic the thoughts may be, it's important to keep them safe.

I don't have any problems with mentally challenged people. I feel bad for them, but a lot of them, always seem so happy. No worries to think of, no stress. They're free people, but I would choose life over freedom, in their state anyways.
We have a lot of them around here in the city. Whenever I'm downtown, there's this one fellow who rides around on a small bike. Whenever he sees me, he always stops, syas hi, shakes my hand, and he rubs his beard, then points to mine. He recognizes the similarities in both us people, so I rub mine, smile, and he leaves.
He's done this about 5 times to me now. Always makes me laugh (in a good way).
Peace.

I think Nowchowederforyou's got the right idea. I don't think its wrong at all to have a laugh with a mentally disabled person, as long as you've swallowed your pride enough to 'switch gears' and get somewhere near their level. This sounds bad, but its not. I really think that words like 'better' and 'worse' get overused in terms of different mentalities, especially with autism. It's not a "lower" or "worse" level of being, just a different one.
I have an autistic cousin and we have an absolute riot together. It took me a while to realize how genuinely funny he is - when I was younger I would shelter myself from any possible embarassment by talking to him like he was something less than a fully-realized human being, like he didn't have feelings or internal reactions to anything I said to him. It was a prickish way to treat a person, but I think its not uncommon for people who aren't used to dealing with 'mental' people - autistic people, anyway - who are often very coherent.

I'm sorry but I have to post this. This is how to laugh with "mental" people:
One day while my family was visiting my mother's sister, my autistic cousin Dave and I decided to drive to the gas station to get a snack. After arriving, we tooled around in the snack aisle, taking our time to settle on the best deal possible. After a good while I had made my decision, so I asked Dave if he had found something yet.
No response. I took a quick stroll around to give Dave another minute.
I came back and asked again, "What's up, Dave. What are you thinking, man?"
He answered, "Can I get a big bag of Crum Bums?"
"What the hell are Crum Bums?" The laughter had arrived before schedule. Luckily I was able to supress it.
Dave pointed to a blue bag of Combos - cheesy crackers, basically - and repeated, "Crum Bums."
So I grabbed the giant bag of Combos - I mean Crum Bums, along with my snickers and paid the $3.15. Off we went to the car.
We pulled into Dave's place and I had eaten my Snickers on the way back. I began unbuckling, but Dave didn't move.
"Where are your Com - Crum Bums?"
Dave shrugged. I laughed.
I took a look around the bottom of Dave's seat and behind it. Nothing. Still buckled in, Dave leaned around and took a gander at the back seat. I proceeded to open the back door and scour the back half of the car - nothing.
Finally we declared it lost and Dave unbuckled and got out of the car while I gave the interior one last once-over from outside the driver's window.
When Dave stood up I saw them.
In a kind of cosmic justice, the Crum Bums had been exactly where we should have looked in the first place - under Dave's ass. There they sat, squished into the nook between the ass and lumbar cushions, all crushed to hell.

But i agree with you Ganj. Some of these people do need to be inside a home to be looked after, because some could be a hazard to themselve's if not cared for properly, or a hazard to other people, and yeah. Most "mental" people are happy, which is good :)

When I was in highschool, I'd always mingle with the Option 3 students. They'd come lighting up the hallways with their bright smiles, and adorable drools. There was this one kid named, Jeremy. It wasn't an everyday occurrence, for I wasn't in school everyday, but we'd always stop eachother, give one another some love, then go about our seperate ways.
There was this other kid that had to wear a helmet all the time. Teachers wouldn't let people get close to him, because, well...he'd probably head-butt the hell out of you. He'd walked alongside the lockers banging his head on them. There were even times that I recall sitting at the lunch table with them (since they had to be seperated). I felt bad for them back then, but now realize that their reality is just as real as our own and they need not our sympathy, because they're just making it through their day, too.

Yeah I had the same experience, except you have to realise, it's more than likely that most of these people are not experiencing the same feelings you've had on shrooms.
Schizophrenics for example can see very frightening, and real looking illusions, without any of the intoxicating feelings of mushrooms. Usualy with mushrooms, everything is fucked up, but it just feels right.
With mentaly ill/retarded people (who are not insane), I would guess that they don't feel like they are on mushrooms either. I think they feel helpless, like a bad trip maybe.
On shrooms I do kind of unlearn everything I've been taught, and relearn it from a more earthly perspective.
I took 1/2 Ounce of shrooms before and it was fucked. I think I said that already on one of these posts. Yeah man after taking 1/2 o of shrooms I literaly was insane for 6 hours. I went from buzzin, to high, to trippin, to scared, to rabid, to calm, to philisophical, and slept.
If you actualy want to experience real authentic insanity beyond your wildest dreams? Just to know what that feels like? Smoke a half bowl of 20x salvia extract
or go for 50 if your really insane.

My mother refused to accept my mental state for a number of reason, one was "would the government take me a way from her, which is what they did while she was growing up. Her grandmother was often taken to the mental ward to be treated with shock therapy. Her parents refused to put in one of those places and she seem to maintain a certain level reasoning.
Now had she been put in one of these places for life, I'm sure she would have gotten worse, as what happened to her mother, which was the reason we moved back to my mother's hometown. Once we moved there her mother moved in with us till the day she died.
What I remember and what I was told about her, was that she was like the people in the movie. We went to see her and see would just sit and do nothing. When we took her out, slowly things changed and before long she was walking herself to the grocery store with her little cart.
