Even though the war on terror dominates the headlines, the culture war in America is almost as intense. On one side you have traditionalists, people who believe the country was well founded, does mostly good things, and has become the most powerful nation on earth by adhering to Judeo-Christian principles like generosity, justice, and self-sacrifice.
On the other side of the culture war are the secular-progressives who believe that the USA is fundamentally a flawed country, which has caused considerable misery both within and outside our borders. The S-P's want drastic change and a new direction for America.

The two most intense issues in the culture war right now are how to deal with terrorism, and what role spirituality should play in the public arena.

The S-P's want little or no public displays of God or religion. That's what drove the attacks on Christmas images and traditions--knock down the big Christian holiday, and the secularists achieve a big victory.

On the terror front, traditionalists largely want aggressive action to wipe out the "evildoers," and if lraq is the battlefield, then so be it.

Secular-progressives are appalled by the Iraq war and generally believe the USA has no right to act unilaterally to hunt down terrorists or their enablers.

So the stage was set for my recent appearance on the David Letterman show. I am a traditionalist; Mr. Letterman tends to mock traditionalists. And he often does it very well.

Our discussion began with the Christmas controversy. Dave did not see it as a big deal. When I pointed out the absurdity of a library in Memphis, Tennessee okaying a manger scene but then telling the woman donating it that she had to remove Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the three Wise Men, Dave said he did not believe the story. And, generally, that was the opinion of the liberal media: There was no Christmas controversy - the whole thing was fabricated by religious zealots bent on establishing a theocracy.

Dave's skepticism must have come as a surprise to Memphis resident Brandi Chambless, the woman ordered to remove statues of the Holy Family and their visitors from the east. But, hey, the shepherds could stay, staring into an empty stable.

The subject quickly shifted to Iraq, a conflict both Letterman and I believe has been poorly managed. We also found common ground on the terrific performance of the U.S. military.

But then Cindy Sheehan came up. Uh-oh.

Dave, as well as many in the entertainment community, feels that Ms. Sheehan should not be criticized. He believes she is above reproach because her son Casey was killed in Iraq.

I do not see it that way, so sparks flew. My contention is that Ms. Sheehan is entitled to grieve and dissent in any way she wants, but her grief is being exploited by far-left elements.

And when Ms. Sheehan told Mark Knoller, a correspondent for CBS radio, that the terrorists in Iraq were "freedom fighters," she insulted thousands of other Americans who lost loved ones in Iraq.

Simply put, terrorists who blow up civilians, women and children are not freedom fighters in any sense. They are murderers and I called Mr. Letterman on Sheehan's support of them.

I hope you saw the program. It was a rare display of the culture war on television. I told Dave I respected his views and he should respect mine. I enjoyed the joust.

By far more important is the wake up call many late night viewers got. We in America are becoming a deeply divided country along cultural lines. The more we all understand what the issues are, the better. The culture war is real, and now everybody that watched Letterman that evening knows it.

Yeah, I saw that episode. I love David Letterman, Bill O'Reilly was far too ugly, Cannabis.com was more appealing so I only caught Dave as he jiggled about in his chair.

Dude, you should watch the clip. I'm not even a big fan of Letterman but he definately conducted himself in a much more respectful manner than OReilly did. OReilly brought notes and very deliberately attacked the man.

You may be at war but understand this, the otherside doesn't see it as such a strong division. We're not at war with you, just at odds with you. Please chill out. Where I'm from, part of being a good moral person is to respect other persons and take them into consideration. And I guess the reason I'm liberal is that I just apply that ethic to the international scale.
Sure there's differences between people. But we're all human enough to solve these problems without resorting to violent means (see also; wars).

Letterman was VERY friendly to the Bush administration after 9/11. I remember him using the phrase, about Chaney, Bush, and Rumsfeld, "They're the real deal!" A lot of people that felt the same way are now asking themselves what exactly the "deal" really is.

Letterman is a conservative to moderate millionaire that doesn't usually stick his neck out - for ratings, arguments, or anything other than doing his job of entertaining. Even BORE knows that, but insists on claiming that his patriotism is superior. The Dubya of today has not matured much, in many ways has regressed backwards, and BORE is just fighting a losing battle by trying to get back the support for Dubya that is now fading fast - not just with Letterman, but a large segment of the American people that voted for him as well.

I don't think that it's going to go any better for the No-Spine Zone, either.
The more fed-up people get with Dubya, the less they are to believe, or watch, apologists and sympathizers like O'Reilly.

I saw a bit of that video. It was pretty interesting. O'Reilly's views are totally nonsensical but at least he's able to argue them like a respectful human being. I'd say Letterman did pretty good up until the '60% of everything you say is crap' line out of nowhere, that just showed he couldn't keep it together.
Plus watching two mild mannered gents having an eerily polite discussion can be damn trippy when your really stoned.

Among other things about O'Reiily, I'm disgusted with seeing Al Sharpton on his show, and BORE literally kissing his fat ass by politely referring to him as "Reverend", and assuring him that he (BORE) is against the death penalty. Why doesn't he ask his boyfriend Sharpton if mobs that he incites make him an accessory to the lynchings, bloodshead, and riots that have occurred?

In 1987 Sharpton started spreading lies that ruined people's careers by representing Tawana Brawley, who falsely accused several people of raping her. Although he was proven wrong in court, he has never recanted, apologized, or paid the monies that he owes to his slander victims.

1991: A Hasidic Jewish driver in Brooklyn's Crown Heights section accidentally kills Gavin Cato, a 7-year-old black child, and anti-Semitic riots erupt. Sharpton races to pour gasoline on the fire. At Gavin's funeral he rails against the "diamond merchants" -- code for Jews -- with "the blood of innocent babies" on their hands. He mobilizes hundreds of demonstrators to march through the Jewish neighborhood, chanting, "No justice, no peace." "We will not stand by," he warns malignantly, "and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business." Any candidate, such as Al Gore, that allows Sharpton to campaign for, appear on TV with, etc., has lost my support. That is one of the reasons I voted for Bush, and now Bush has shown himself to be unworthy of the presidency.

I guess it's back to the Libertarian ticket next time, unless the Democrats or Republicans acquire some integrity. Unfortunately, I don't anticipate anything of the sort happening in the near future.

The jews have faults, like anyone else. There's not enough of them to make much of a difference either way. The christians love israel because it's the birthplace of their alleged savior god, and the oil people are in bed with the sheiks. Is that what you want to hear? I don't think that the article makes it out like you say at all. We are talking about a situation that Sharpton was complicit in that resulted in the lynching of someone that was innocent of any wrongdoing in the accidental death of that child. His only "crime" was the outfit that he was wearing. The murder of those people in Harlem was another one of Sharpton's masterpieces.

That man, Yankel Rosenbaum, did absolutely nothing. He was murdered by a lynch mob, which was fueled by the words of Sharpton. Rosenbaum was not even an American. This happened where I live, in Brooklyn. The mayor at the time, David "Do Nothing" Dinkins was also responsible for tying the hands of the police during that time. I've met Dinkins and he's a nice guy, but a hack that never should have been mayor of NYC.
All I'm saying is that if the Democrats keep courting people like Sharpton, they'll get what they deserve. I've already expressed my disgust with Bush, whom I voted for.
What is happening in Israel has nothing to do with an orthodox cult in Brooklyn, or, in the case of Yankel Rosenbaum, his home in Australia. I do not think that they (Hassidic Jews) even serve in the armed forces of Israel, but I may be mistaken on that. I can say one thing for certain: they do NOT mug anybody in the streets. They're like the Amish, in dress and in other ways. If you don't like them, fine, but don't think that they are in league with ultra right wing warmongers, because that just isn't their bag. They're more interested in the Talmud, and going to the synagogue - NOT in killing people, either here, or in Israel, or anywhere else.

Almost all of them voted Democrat. Sharpton acts like the Jews are doing harm to the Blacks, simply because they have a higher income - but what he forgets is that the Jews hired African Americans when others wouldn't - and were the biggest supporters of their voting, housing, equal opportunity, and other rights. He's selling the idea that they exploit the African Americans, but that's hogwash. They've consistently been there when other whites weren't, and many jews have gotten disgusted by the anti-jewish rhetorical bashings that they've unfairly received.

nicholasstanko has claimed to have had a Jewish boss once. He claims that this boss fired him, and replaced him with somebody that was Jewish. I believe that he said that this boss told him that he didn't work hard enough, or something to that effect.

I tend to think that this boss was giving him the straight dope, as he probably could have just said that they couldn't afford to keep him. If the Jewish boss was racist, then why did he hire nic, who is Black, in the first place?

I once revealed that my wife's family was Jewish (mostly non-religous), so he singles me out as gung-ho for Israel - which is something that is not true, but he has taken it upon himself to presume.

This guy should get a life, because it's obvious that he has no idea what he's talking about and he is too young to remember the civil rights movement - who were at the front lines, where the support came from,etc. Like many young people today, his main "research" is reading bullshit web sites that express opinions based on distortions and lies.

His boss, Jewish or whatever, was probably right - and he should have learned a lesson frrom that experience.

I actually saw that episode on the other night and yeah it was good O'Reilly should of known what he was getting into when he went on the letterman show.And he did not like it did he?(O'Reilly)and he let himself off the stage just before dave ended the interview so good on dave he's a great guy that is just trying to earn a living just like most of you.Great show wish I'd taped it it was great.

A friend's father once told me about living in the projects during the 60's. he told me how tough it was for blacks to get jobs, and that the jews took advantage of the situation and made many work for minumum wage with little benefits. Of course, there were undoubtedly many businesses that didnt practice this, but alot did.

Sharpton acts like the Jews are doing harm to the Blacks, simply because they have a higher income - but what he forgets is that the Jews hired African Americans when others wouldn't - and were the biggest supporters of their voting, housing, equal opportunity, and other rights.

A friend's father once told me about living in the projects during the 60's. he told me how tough it was for blacks to get jobs, and that the jews took advantage of the situation and made many work for minumum wage with little benefits. Of course, there were undoubtedly many businesses that didnt practice this, but alot did.

He's selling the idea that they exploit the African Americans, but that's hogwash. They've consistently been there when other whites weren't, and many jews have gotten disgusted by the anti-jewish rhetorical bashings that they've unfairly received.

I find that american jews are alot better than israelis when it comes to inter-racial interaction. Maybe its due to the cultural differences of location...

Like I said, I'm no fan of Israel, but these domestic-front problems have nothing to do with it. The Arabs may be a little darker than Europeans, but they are NOT African, and will never do for people of African descent what the Jews have.

His boss, Jewish or whatever, was probably right - and he should have learned a lesson frrom that experience.

i worked very hard at my old job, and ive never been rude to anyone i was serving in my life.

I was told that they needed to downsize and that they'd call me back in a week. i found out the next week, that i wouldnt be coming back and the job that supposedly didnt exist anymore was taken by a jewish person.

if you can hook me up with a swee brooklyn job, then lemme at it.
