I feel lacking... Question about cloning.
I have researched and read many, mnany mixed accounts on cloning, and I'm about ready to go for an indoor crop. I have all the room I need (20x25) plus a large ventilation duct on either side of the room, one in and one out (of my chimney, should cover smell during flowering periods) and all teh soil, lights, and pots I need.
But my question is not about that.
It is about cloning.
I am lost on the matter, so let me be short. I have only a vague conception of what cloning is, and no idea how to do it well. So any links to old threads I didn't find or a site would be bucnhes of help. But first, let me get this straight...
Is cloning simply trimming a branch and planting it with a special fertilizer to make it take root? Or does it do that itself?
Thanks for all the help... Trust me, I searched a lot.
I apologize if I just wasn't using the right keywords.
Thanks.

audio.. please stick around.. I am very curious what you are going to do with a 20x25 foot room...
WOW..
cloning is very easy.... if you still need info.. just continue this thread.. it is a little intimidating at first ... but once you do it succesfully it is a cake walk...
if turtle can do it so can you..
i love you
and welcome aboard

I read somewhere that you can buy a thing that you just dip the stem in it, plant the trimming into some soil and after a few days with watering it will have roots. It's somethign that stimulates the growth of roots.

But best of luck...

Cloning is easy, brother..
Get a nice slab of grodan rockwool cubes...
soak it for a couple of hours in a mildly fertilized (go with 1/3rd strength flower formula..or purchase one of the many products for this purpose..I use b-cuzz root stim and I innoculate the slab with piranha powder (beneficial bacteria)..make sure your mixture is PH adjusted at 6.0)
The biggest mistake folks make is to leave the rockwool far too wet..squeeze the excess out to the point where the cubes feel almost dry to the touch..turn the slab over so you have the widest part of the cubes on the bottom for added stability..dip your cuttings into a rooting hormone (I prefer the powder..but the gels work too) use a toothpick to make a starter hole (so you don't bend the stems while trying to stick them) and fill that slab with nice healthy cuttings!
Spray the cuttings once..close up the dome..and leave em alone for 7-10 days...
Another big mistake people make is to overspray their cuttings..this can make the environment too wet..and if the temps are too low you may get damp off or botritis attacking your clones before they can root up..
After they are all rooted SLOWLY get them used to the ambient humidity levels by opening your dome just a bit and letting it stay that way for a couple of hours..go to the dairy queen and get a nice blizzard or one of thei delicious milkshakes..by the time you get home your new babies will be ready for the harsh glare of the HID lamps..
I use an anti-transpirant wax before I plant them in the big containers..but that's just me and I like the added insurance..
Once you master cloning you become the envy of your friends and neighbours..it's funny how simple it is..yet so many folks have problems..and they are usually due to one of the pitfalls I pointed out for you..
Hope this helps..and have a real hum dinger of a new year's celebration!
Happy crops..
Johnny

hahahah
"more or less"
If you have a razor blade and some "root tone" and rockwool, you can clone like a mother -fucker...
just make clean diagnol cuts
make sure you cut your clone directly below a node (about 1/4 inch below the node)
then cut the branch(s) on the node off..
then dip your clone in root tone.. make sure all cuts , 2 or 3, get some root tone.. then stick your clone in the rockwool cube...
your cube should be wet with PH balanced water... 5.0
You don't even need to use root tone... but I would recomend both root tone and wilt spray...

Thanks for the tips, and yes, the 20x25 is nice. Already got a row of shelves set up, but I believe I will either have to plant small or light with halogens, as jumps in electrical bills get reported around here due to some people who speed night and day to make more speed. Plus it just looks curious, and I have no shop or welder.
I am also very new to the idea of indoors. I know halogens will produce less-than-desirable (when desirable is sweet, organic, untouched outdoors) plants, but it will keep year-round supply if I stage the grows correctly. Here is my plan insofar:
Divide the room into two long 25x10s with existing shelves on either 25' side and more shelves about 5 feet above (I have a nice ladder) for the staged clones and maybe extra growing.
One room will be for the clones/anything pre-flowering (on a set light cycle) and the other will be on the flowering cycle.
Each room will have an intake and an exhaust divided into two, and I can maintain fairly stable temperatures.
All watering and lighting will be elbow grease for now, but I can stand it.
And while quality will be disappointing with halogens I am sure, it will still be smooth mids if this strain grows well indoors too, and will still draw money.
And I'm sorry about the FAQ. I didn't know we- er, you had a FAQ here.
But thanks for the input, I'll keep reading up.

New question: Do you use some sort of propagation chamber mini-greenhouse thing? I hear talk of air bubblers and whatnot in the unofficial cloning FAQ.

Bump.
I just went out and got the halogens set up in a small space and have decided to plant and start lighting now. That means at 10:00 every morning will be my offtime, I am guessing. I have 5 planted, just going to hold one of the females back for motherhood. Installing more halogens later, and everything else.

Maybe I did forget the word. Long, tubelike lights. Normally in office buildings and classrooms, lots of light in small spaces. Fairly reliable, not very hot, white light (not yellowish).

i saw a thread on og with a guy that put the cuttings straight into a cup of water and they rooted just fine, then you just put it all into some soil. Important thing about cloning is having low light levels.

I think what you are referring to is Flourescent lights, and unless you have bought GROW Bulbs for them, they will not work. No matter how you try THEY WILL NOT WORK! Halogen bulbs WILL NOT WORK either. Just trying to save you some time. As for the cloning thing its really easy, just take your time READ all you can and be patient. I personally use a product called Clonex, you may like it you may not. Good luck!

Can you obtain grow bulbs at your local supplies store? And are these going to be hard on my electrical expenses? Or hot?
Are there any electrically cheap solutions for a mass grow besides these bulbs?
Thanks.

you want a bulb that looks like this... just for starters
and now you know

Thanks... But would it be reasonable, buying two to hang between each plant and one above? No alternatives, besides those 1,000w homegrower indicators?
And I don't see how those bulbs are different, besides one number or an odd word added in. Any advice?

QUESTION, WHEN USING GEL ROOTING COMPOUND, SUCH AS "OLIVIAS", DO I GLOB IT ON AND MAKE SURE THERES A GLOB ON THE STEM WHEN I STICK IT IN THE PLUG. OR DO I JUST POKE IT IN THE GEL, AND JUST STICK IT IN, JUST A THIN COATING??? I HAVE ONLY HAD 3 CLONES ROOT SO FAR, OUT OF 15. NOT SURE WHAT I DID TO MAKE EM WORK. THNX

Simply let the end of the stem sit in the rooting gel (I use Clonex) for fifteen seconds and then slip into the rockwool cube or the plug, don't wipe it off. I use a spoon that way I can put the clone on the handle and let just the bottom part of the stem sit in the gel. Been cloning about 20 years average rate of 97-98%. Are you using a propigator tray, heating your medium, and watching the nutes, the ph and the light?

when to you take the cuttings any one?.we only want females.but do you take the cuttings when they are in the vege state, if so they wouldnt of sexed yet. the only thing i can think of os to put them on flower light cycle till they sex kill males, then back to vege before you take the cuttings, or can you cut them when they are flowering
