There's more "better" available now. Back then it was pretty much Acupulco Gold, Columbian red bud or gold, Thai stick, the rare hawaiian, some average hash...none of this Baskin Robbins 131 flavors you kids can choose from today.
Oh, and no internet.
CLAIM #2:Quote:

The claim that there has been a 10-, 20- or 30-fold increase in marijuana potency since the 1970s is used to discredit previous studies that showed minimal harm caused by the drug and convince users from earlier eras that today's marijuana is much more dangerous.
THE FACTS
For more than 20 years the government-funded Potency Monitoring Project (PMP) at the University of Mississippi has been analyzing samples of marijuana submitted by U.S. law enforcement officials. At no time have police seizures reflected the marijuana generally available to users around the country and, in the 1970s, they were over- represented by large-volume low-potency Mexican kilobricks. 8
During the 1970s, the PMP regularly reported potency averages of under 1%, with a low of 0.4% in 1974. Quite clearly, these averages underestimate the THC content of marijuana smoked during this period.
Marijuana of under 0.5% potency has almost no psychoactivity. While it is possible that people sometimes obtained marijuana of such low potency, for the drug to have become popular in the 1960s and 1970s, most people must have regularly obtained marijuana with higher THC content.
Until the late 1970s, PMP samples included none of the traditionally higher-potency cannabis products, such as buds and sinsemilla, even though these products were available on the retail market. When changes in police practices resulted in their seizure, PMP potency averages increased.
Every independent analysis of potency in the 1970s found higher THC averages than the PMP For example, the 59 samples submitted to PharmChem Laboratories in 1973 averaged 1.62%; only 16 (27%) contained less than 1% THC, more than half were over 2% and about one-fifth were over 4%. In 1975, PharmChem samples anged from 2 to 5%, with some as high as 14% - nearly 30 times the .71 average reported by the PMP 9
After 1980, both the number and variety of official seizures increased dramatically, improving the validity of the PMP's reported averages, although they continue to be based on "convenience" rather than "representative" samples.
As shown below, average potency has remained essentially unchanged since the early 1980s:

I agree Beachguy, those "studies" are just plan bullshit. Like I said, there is just more of the primo in more varieties available today, but it's not any better or worse than the "primo" we had back then.
that's a fact!! lolQuote:

most of the marijuana smoked back in the sixties and seventies was probably provided from an unknown source out of another country (mexico, columbia, etc). there have been a lot of advances in growing marijuana since those days.
for instance, the government opening up trade with outside governments is a important factor as to why we have more potent marijuana to this day. just a few questions that arise:
1. what's the cause of more potent marijuana coming to the states?
2. what kind of marijuana were europeans smoking in the sixties and seventies?
3. could the trade agreements between nations influence "better" marijuana?
4. does a person still get the same high after decades of smoking?
5. what important advances has there been in growing marijuana?
a. technological advances?
one thing i'd really love to know is why in the hell have the prices gone up so drastically?
Hippies preferred homegrown that's all that it was.
personally i don't see how one can andswer that question, not like anyone could becase most likely they have forgot on how good or bad it was back then, i mean come on can you tell now from ur frist joint you ever had, was it that much better now? no study or word from mouth can say yes or no inless we had a time machine(witch would slove omost everything in the would today, if we had one)
The first time I got high was in 68, i think. Two brothers had moved into town and they bragged of having smoked dope. I told them I wasn't afraid to try it...and a few days later at a basketball game, a kid a year younger than me sat down on the bench. "I hear you wanna try some pot," he said.
I didn't really want to...but i surely couldn't back down then. It was this same kid that I would trip with a year or so later. He hung out with the older teens...and they tolerated him, but sometimes tried to run him off. I remember watching the hippies try to pry his hands off of a car seat when he refused to get out of the car as they were leaving for a party in the woods. But he was able to get hold of the better drugs. And once you're in....you're in. Back then you could buy a marlboro box stuffed with good turkish weed for five bucks. A nickel. And there was mescaline. this I found out by accident. my sister was into drugs...and one day after school, I was going through her purse. I found a little pink capsule. I thought it was a downer...and that I could get away with eating it before supper. I emptied out the contents and replaced the contents with crushed aspirin. Yes, I was now a theif too.
Ah....but the music! Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young came out with Deja Vu sometime in the early seventies? or was it 69? No....after Woodstock.
the summer camp outs...beer on the hill. red sunsets....
Anyhow...black opium treated hash, mesc, thc, lsd, cocaine, testers rubber cement(yup...we even sniffed glue), beer, cheap wine, uppers, downers, black beauties, crossroads, animal tranquilizers, etc., etc....oh...and mom had some kick-ass valiums too.
and there were the rip-offs who would sell a kid catnip for grass...or if you wanted an upper, would sell you a downer...
Would have made it through high-school if the booze hadn't kicked in late in my senior year...
"we grew up smashed...and we grew up alone..." - Tom Petty
oh...and the last I heard of my friend...was that he had problems and tried to shoot drano into his arm...
not that much different from how i grew up...well...not much different from what i've experiened in the past two or three years. thanks for the memories, man. ooooh, i need to get ahold of this mescaline.Quote:

You're right about homegrown. It was always suspect. No where near as much info on growing back then. Just good old Ed Rosenthal.Quote:

Yep....that highway 8 down along the border. Your handgrips melt...and when you wipe your forehead with your hand you leave a black mark. The good thing about that stretch of road is that you can pull to the side, get off your bike, click a couple of pictures, get back on and ride away before another vehicle comes by.Quote:
