Oh the Mistakes I've made....
First off, I'd like to say that there is a bunch of really smart peeps here when it comes to growing.
Too bad I didn't read the posts and stick to what I read.
It looks like my first attempt for a full blown Hydro grow is not going to be as good as I expected, but there is alot of lessons to be learned from that. For the first time growers here, I can't stress enough ,read and stick to it.
DO NOT: give seedlings nutes until they have at least the second set of leaves, and then only 1/4 strength if that. If you nute them... It will stunt the growth at the least or kill them... don't ask how I know!!
DO: just give seedlings only water with a couple of drops per 10 gals or so of micro nute while starting from seeds.
DO NOT: think that the only way to start seeds is from the paper towel method, they can and do germinate well and quickly right in the rockwool.
DO NOT: touch seedlings with anything or disturb them, it can and does damage them, then you end up wiith garbage and wasted time.
DO: go slow on going up on the nutes after they are seedlings.
DO: make sure you check the PH and keep it steady.
DO NOT: make drastic changes to the water ph or fert wise.
DO: make sure you have an EC meter and use it. Yes you can easily burn even adult plants by not measuring the PPM concentration of nutes.
DO NOT: mix seedlings with more mature plants, they require different nute needs, and will surely screw up either one of them.
DO: check your water levels and make sure to change the water every 1-2 weeks, and make sure the PH and nutes are the same after the water change.
DO NOT: think that your first grow will be a huge success. Plan for the worst, and hope for the best.
DO NOT: flower your plants too early to rush them along. You'll lose the time in veg state to less yeild and it still will take time for them to be mature enough to flower anyways, so wait till they are ready to flower first.
DO NOT: think just cause you invested in few hundred bucks in stuff that you'll pull it off. You have to take care to use what you've got the right way. Money doesn't buy a green thumb!!
DO: listen to others and learn from their mistakes first, it will pay off in the end.
DO: wait until you are completely sure that your male is a male before cutting it down.
DO NOT: wait to long to make sure your male is a male before cutting it down either.
DO NOT: feel bad about cutting down a perfectly health MALE plant, it's hard to have that pit in your stomach feeling that you've just wasted time on growing it, but that's the way it goes.
DO: use only clean water. RO, rain water, really good filtered tap, or bottled water only. Never water straight from the tap.
DO NOT: panic just cause you see a spot on your leaves.
DO: make sure the spot on your leaves is what it looks like.
DO NOT: just trim fan leaves and other leaves nilly-willy.
DO NOT: Tell anyone that your growing tomatoe (quialism) plants. No brothers sisters girlfriends (expecially). No one can keep a secret better than you.
DO: make sure that you learn from your mistakes and don't repeat them.
DO: plan on your second grow after going to flower if you have the room.
And Most Importantly: Support the movement to leagalize what God himself gave to us to enjoy.
Out of 10 plants I ended up with 2 females, a bit of stretch, but doing very well with nice wiskers coming out of the flowers. Not good odds, but it was mostly swag seed, and ALL my fault. I Saved the White Widows for the second grow. There is a bunch more do and don'ts but I made so many mistakes that I don't think that I will repeat any of them on my second attempt. 10 more tomatoe plants just starting, and going to finish my 2 females in the next 5-6 weeks. Just in time to start thinking about flowering the second grow.

You did good to save WW for second grow. After you have one under your belt and get the good gentics going, you will be pleased to know where you are going with it...goodluck.lw :smokin:

Oh the Mistakes I've made....
Good post hydro,i would have to stress to ,,do not rush your plants into flower you always seem to end up with more males,Dont tell anyone is a real good idea and secondly just for your info the very fist funny looking leaves that the seed produces are called the cotoleedons(not shore on spelling )these little funny looking leaves have all the nutes the seedling needs for the first month at least.......Happy growing.....
-
Oh the Mistakes I've made....
Just to add another note on a DO NOT... for Hydro
DO NOT: Turn on your 1KW HPS BEFORE your nute tank is flooding and draining. You will stress the plants without water when the sun starts a-shine-in!!!
DO: Make sure you keep an eye on your nutes each day. Both PH and EC.
DO: Measure your nutes carefully when using a 3-part system. Some go (grow, micro, flower) 321, 222, 123... Just make sure you know what your putting in your tank.
DO: Flush your plants when changing over from Veg to Flower as well as taking down the lights for 36 hours (keep them dark for 36 hours before switching on the HPS) if you are using MH and HPS seperately. Same applies for multi-spectrum bulbs.
DO: Make sure your Carbon Scrubber is complete... before you need it. Once your plants start reeking it's a mad rush to finish it. Will post plans on another thread.
DO NOT: Think that just caus' someone posts that the plant will stay low it will not stretch!!! It will when you least think so. Top 44 stretched on me, and it's under 1KW of light!!!
Well.... will add some more as I learn the small mistakes I've made... I've also been blessed with the remainder of my plants all females. So finishing off 5 females... 3 Top 44 and 2 bag weed plants (some kind of strain that was awesome, saved the seeds). WW have been planted on 11/20 and are already showing 3rd/4th set of leaves on some/most plants.

I have been guilty of at least some of your list.I am a quick learner and have been keeping a journal to rectify making additional errors.I spent six hours here my first night reading to try to start out right. So I appreciate the help and guidance from everyone...

I just wanted to state something. Most people say female plants are better than males plants but God you guys kill them (rofl, sexists). Joking, my point is around here people still sell male weed and we still get high, I smoked both sexes (if you wanna call it that), I can tell a difference but it doesnt matter the sex to me. Male or Female, I think if its your first time growing, growing either sex would just be good for practice.

Oh the Mistakes I've made....
No, I'm not joking :P. We dont believe in wastin' weed over here so either is sold.

Oh the Mistakes I've made....
Well after having my first grow finish up, which by the way got me about 1-1.5 oz per plant. Extremely potent (the kind that goes for $100/quarter oz around here) I know on the small side, but none the less, was happy with the results, I think we need to do some more work on the FAQ's though.
In looking at the FAQ's what some (including myself) are missing is not only some very crucial information about the details, but the waste of time, space, hermies (that always seem to show up in one plant, just a few flowers, but enought to screw up a great grow), cloning to full grow cycling, as well as proper construction techniques for cloners, plumbing, etc... I could go on forever. The piece meal of information is fine for fumbling your way through for a while till you get the hang of it, posting a few pics for answers, or just the regular banter that we all do since we are proud of our plants/rooms/results, or just to say Hi!. But, what I'm seeing as I go along is that there is way too much to figure out as time goes by where I could be growing even better plants, utilizing my space better, choosing the best lighting, and making sure that the cycle from seed/clone to picking is kept going.
Now I know that all of us have differant rooms, closets, or even gardens that we use. But the common thread here is that we all are aiming to achive the best results with what we have. I for one keep making mistakes! Not the same ones obviously that I did the first time, otherwise I'd be a f*cking idiot. The mistakes now are not in keeping the plants healthy, but looking back at how I started, I wish I went with a differant type of system overall. Why, well it sure would have made it easier to get a higher yield, a lot easier to stop growing from seed and clone properly (that is something that I still have to figure out after I finish this grow of where to put my cloner how to start a good crop and pick the best females to clone and how to do it right).
So, with that I'm going to be working on a good FAQ that addresses many of what I'm seeing as missing links and 'workflow' (being a Systems Analyst and a programmer) to keep the small sized grow room working well. Obviously this is not aimed at the guys here that have already figured out what they are doing right and wrong, but more for the newcomer who wants to get 10-20 plants cycling from clone (after picking some good females) to crop.
Obviously I'm going to make some assumptions and base it on my experience as well as the ones I've read. Sure I will also take into consideration the cabinet grower, but this is aimed at the Hydro only grower who has about a 8x8 room available for growing.
I may ask for help from much more experienced growers as not to confuse the beginer. I hope you all don't mind. But what I'm aiming for is a guide from chosing ferts, making your own (real life building) ebb/flood and DWC systems, cloners, cheap sources of lighting (even building your own ballasts), ventilation, and proper care.
I hope that over the next few months my efforts will pay off for others as my first mistakes have. I don't like wasting time, having plants that don't produce at the best possible (or even near optimal) conditions, and I want to make sure that space is utilized well. Many of us only have small areas to use, some large, but those that do... well your very fortunate. There are also some people who are just heads and aren't thinking at all. This ain't work for you that I'm doing. It's more for the people who need it (medicinal reasons).
The last thing anyone wants is to have problems not only with growing, but those with neighbors, kids, and just plain curious people. Remember that anyone who grows and has children runs the risk of not only having them discover your 'project' but your local agency taking your children from you for (in my case growing for medicinal reasons) obvious reasons. That is one of my fears if not my only one.
I don't grow for selling (I will give out a 1/4 to a friend) but both my wife and I live with constant pain (and fear) in a state that is not friendly towards people who have a few plants to ease pain from chronic and life theatening health issues.
Thanks for your time if you read this, and I hope that my quide (or just a giant FAQ) will help others.
-Warning... RANT-
Support your local chapters, write your congress person for those that do use for medical reasons and tell them how important it is for people to have access to a very important medicine that helps people. This here is more of a rant than part of what I'm trying to accomplish for others but it is important to change the world and the views that our government has. WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT, the people who write laws only are there to uphold the Constitution, not re-write it, or figure out a way to make it work for them.
Remember that you can't overdose from your activities (it's not possible!). The people out to bust you will never be your friends, they aren't your enemies, but stick a badge on someone and give them a gun, and they think they are above you, the laws, and are the keepers of the rest of us, as though we are some kind of animals living in a pen. Just look what is going on now with wiretaps, reading our mail, and the 'Patriot Act'. All just more reasons to take away our liberties.
Be smart about your activities and God Bless.

Um, dude, I mean this in the best way, but I think you need to get a little instructed.
I don't think you can smoke males. I mean, sure, you can smoke them... but if you see a bud, dude, the female produces the bud. A male will produce small pollen sacks (balls).
Unless you actually smoke the pollen sacks... ?
Again, I don't want to sound like a dick, but I don't think you smoke both females and males... I think you smoke females... but you call them males.
Best,

Lol oh yeah, sorry about that. I am interested in growin' weed and I was just reading a few things on it and your right. I'm just now realizing those seeds in the weed I buy doesnt mean a male produced the bud (rofl). Sorry for not reading up on this b4 I posted :P.

Oh the Mistakes I've made....
I think this should be added as a "dont". I found it out a web-site
Quote:
The information age is upon us and and increasing amount of data is being kept about all of us whether we realize it or not. With the war on drugs in full effect, the D.E.A. is using this information at every possible opportunity.
When you make a purchase with a credit card, every last bit of information regarding that purchase is filed away into a database, both at the store and with your credit card company. Not only the price, but the exact date, location, and items purchased are recorded and stored away. Many stores and credit card companies routinely sell their databases of customers and transactions to anybody who can afford it. The D.E.A can certainly afford it. After all, they're using your tax dollars.
The D.E.A. as well as other government agencies DO purchase these databases for their own uses. They feed them into their computers and the computers spit out a list of anybody with "suspicious" purchases. Any purchases that could be associated with drug production, use, or selling could be flagged for further investigation. These "suspicious" purchases include unusual chemicals, medical supplies such as syringes, lights and timers, and even potting soil and fertilizer.
The point is, if you are planning on purchasing supplies to grow marijuana don't take any chances. While the average home grower, who is simply growing enough for his own use, would probably never be flagged by the computers, you never know. If you are purchasing equipment or supplies, PAY CASH! In addition, many supermarkets and discount stores now have some sort of "Preferred Customer" cards. When you buy something, regardless of how you pay, you give them your card to scan and all of your purchases are recorded. They then send you some sort of coupon depending on what and how much you purchased each month. It sounds like a good deal, but you wind up having all of your purchases recorded and sold just like with the credit cards. DON'T use one of these cards when you are purchasing anything that might be deemed suspicious. For that matter, don't use them at all. They just result in a ton of junk mail and a lot of people knowing exactly what you buy and when you buy it.
I think it's a good "dont" and good advice.

Which is why i believe that a second list should be assembled.. a list of lights and/or other extra supplies, so ppl kno what to look for in the stores.. some kid could read the whole "u need higher wattage" and buy the wrong bulb wit mad watts, and send a virgin to her firey demise on some aztec shit.. this way, we'll see somethin in the store that we saw in the sticky, we'll know for sure if its good to use..

Very true... never tell no one that your growing... and the better lights the better plants... everyone wins...
Its good to fuck up 1 or 2 grows, i did, and it enables you to do this, to learn from your mistakes... and also it allows you to modify the growing area or stratigies if you need to.

Do u really think the DEA is scrubbing purchase orders to find out if there is someone out there that bought a 1000W HPS light and therefore must be searched to find out if there makin something bad in the eyes of the law? Come on, something like 80 percent of homeowners grow plants...and start the mass majority from seed inside the house. Personally I dought they would even waste there time, or even care. If they cared, they would close the mex/US boarder. I have found that some strains seem to make me more paranoid then others. Why is this? What can I do about that?
-
Oh the Mistakes I've made....
I've been using MG soil for the first time...I've never had plants grow like this.
All that Glitters is not Gold, the saying goes, I know.....
Can anyone tell me about the "dangers" of using MG ???
I've tried searching the forums, I've found nothing more specific
than "Ummm it's just BAD, mmmkay".
I'm a biology student, it's ok to use big words with me.
Anyone?
-
Oh the Mistakes I've made....
I'm going to take a quick stab at this one-
I think it's a brand association problem. The soil might be just fine. Not good, mind you; acceptable.
It's their ferts that are really poor quality and inappropriate for this type of plant. From what I can gather, your chances of ending up with a toxic salt buildup are pretty high with that crap MG peddles.
Since the ferts are so bad, everyone stays away from the soil too.
I personally don't use it either; whay bother, since you can get a big sack of nice organic seaweed compost for an even lower unit price?
This leads to another one of my DON'Ts:
Don't go overboard on the peat moss! Sure, it makes your soil nice and light but it has a pH in the 4-5 range, and after being in the pot for a while, if your plants haven't already died of pH problems (nutrient blockage), they WILL end up with waterlooged roots and be prone to fungus.
DO get really good dirt and mix it with some vermiculite or perlite. Good dirt makes bud taste better!

Oh the Mistakes I've made....
Damn straight- and Allman Bros, MArshall Tucker Band, but ESPECIALLY Little Feat.
So as I don't get scolded for straying from the thread...
DON'T be afraid to ask questions...that old hippie lady who works at the local garden center is a great resource for tomato growing advice. You might even consider buying some actual tomato seeds from her and....
DO grow an outdoor garden, the bigger the better, with other types of plants. It gives you not only valuable experience and a place to test techniques, but also AN EXCUSE FOR HAVING A LOT OF AGRICULTURAL SHIT LAYING AROUND. "Oh hi officer, you just popped by to see why you found so many empty bottles of fertilizer in my trash? Why don't you pop around back and help yourself to some zucchini. It'll come in handy back at the station..."
DON'T throw away growing-related garbage in your own trash. Take it to the landfill yourself, in a different bag from your other garbage. Or use the dumpster at a huge apartment complex.
DO Make sure you have a damn good job to go to every day and file taxes on. Hint: A job as a waitress or bartender or stripper or anything tipped is a great way to explain having extra cash around. Seriously, my growing hero (before this person got STUPID and got into hard shit) filed takes as -no crap- an exotic dancer. Despite the fact that this was a homely individual who I would pay to see REMAIN clothed... but it works for tax purposes.
DON'T be conspicuous. That tinted SUV is probably not a great idea if you are claiming only $20,000 in taxes from your day job at the mall.
DO plan on being educated enough to be completely self-sufficient so you can pursue this relaxing hobby in the privacy of your own home, not having to worry about putting roommates or family at risk, or yourself at risk by pissing them off enough to yap.

DON'T: come onto these forums and post randomly before reading
DO: Read till your brain explodes BEFORE even thinking of picking up a trowel
DON'T: Use hydroponics for personal use for 2 very good reasons, 1: hydro chemicals (not organic hydro) makes ur bud taste gnarly, 2: if you do get caught, cops and judges look at people growing in the dirt as small time and growing for personal use and those growing hydro as big time movers and shakers in the black market.
DO: Use all organic fertilizers, pesticides, soil, and anything else i've forgotten.
DON'T: go to mytube.com and watch nornna... she's creepy and addicting
Peace, love, and firepower (btw.. that's mine.. if i see one person using it, i will behead them personally.. and then let my pitbull use their genitals as a chew toy... actually reverse that, genitals and then beheading..)

Oh the Mistakes I've made....
I agree with everything except the no tap water. I use tap water and I don't even let it sit out over night. HaHa, chlorine and flouride, that's just a myth that it harms your plants. In fact, if you use it right away it's still cold will help your plants.
I should mention that I'm talking about soil not hydro, but unless your tap water is unfit to drink, it's plenty good enough for your plants. Plus, it's way cheaper than any alternative so you shouldn't be saying never to use it.
-
Oh the Mistakes I've made....
Yeah I use straight tap water too.
I have another 'don't' too...
DON'T go dumpster-diving at a nursery and use the pots without washing them. That's a 100% sure way to get pests.
DO.....Put them through the dishwasher or soak them overnight in bleach.

But many of us have tap water out of whack to the extreme and modification of it or substituting with a 'safe' source is mandatory if any kind of harvest is to be expected. The majority of people's tap water is not safe for cannabis and all should be ph tested before using. This goes for soil as well as hydro.

Are you saying that most people's tap water is unfit to drink, or are you saying that it's ok to drink but not good for cannabis? Because if it's the latter then you are wrong.
I never said not to adjust for PH. Of course, you have to adjust the PH. I just said that unless your water is unfit to drink, then it's good enough for your plants. My water is 550-700 ppms, very hard; then I add my nutes on top of that. I have no problems.
Cold water is better than warm water, so all you people that leave your water sitting over night, you don't have to.
