UK-US-AUS-NZ-CAN-IRE etc. Slang thread.
We all speak english but not exactly the same so I thought we could have a cross cultural discussion on how english is spoken in different places.
For instance..
"Pissed" in the US means "mad or angry" but in the UK and elsewhere it means drunk.
To "take the piss" in the UK means to make fun of...whereas in the US that would mean that you have taken some urine...er.. somewhere.
To take "a piss" in the US means well..to urinate.
"mad" means crazy in the UK but in the US it means "pissed."
Like to "skin up" in the UK and elsewhere would be to roll a joint.
However in the US that would sound like you were going to jerk off or something vaguely sexual like that.
I once had a friend from Belfast who was always like "let's skin one up" and I at first thought he was pervin' out on me. But he really just wanted to get high.

Fags are cigarettes, not gays over here.
There are words like footpath, that US say sidewalk, but that's not the same thing.
Do Americans call 5 and 10 dollar notes fivers and tenners like over here? lol
-
UK-US-AUS-NZ-CAN-IRE etc. Slang thread.
nope we say 5 bucks or 10 bucks. I heard that people over in england call cigarettes fags. When i heard this ( i was really young) I thought that was some of the funniest shit in the world! I was just a typical little badass tombay son of a bitch back then, HAvent changed much except now i do drugs and I dont roll in mud or play in it anymore. LOL :D
-
UK-US-AUS-NZ-CAN-IRE etc. Slang thread.
No..but what you call 5 and ten pence we call nickel and dimes.
We would say Five bucks or ten bucks.

Lol, well you'd have to know the English accent well before you came here i guess.
Like everyone says "Quid" instead of "Pound" (money-wise), like saying "Here's that 3 quid i owe ya!"

America has ebonics. The meanings of a lot of your words are understood well in America, but I'm sure none of ya'll understand ebonics. We're truly unique.
-
UK-US-AUS-NZ-CAN-IRE etc. Slang thread.
That reminds me..I was living in San Francisco and there were alot of Irish and British there and some dude ("bloke") came in and asked for a pack of "fags".
The obviously gay shopkeeper laughed and told him he was in the right city for it but he should ask for cigarrettes instead.

BUMBAG (ENGLISH) = FANNYPACK (US)
Cos fanny means ya bum
not ya MINGE
(the office)

Yeah but the UK has cockney rhyming slang..
there is no way an american can understand that unless you are told exactly what it means.

Yeah, all that in Austin Powers is real rhyming slang.. nothing made up there, and what i said is what you'd say if you wanted to speak in cockney slang...

That's true but mostly on the east coast. On the west "mad" is "hella"
I went to the UK and "Pants" is known as underwear. Like "underpants".
Also a 'sweater" is a "jumper" in the UK. Say jumper in the US and everyone looks up to see somebody suicidal
And "sneakers" are "trainers". Say trainer in the US and people think you are working in a gym or a circus.

Wha'?
And why do the English (or Europe in general?) like U's so much? For example:
color vs. colour
flavor vs. flavour
Or maybe the question is.. why don't Americans like U's?

I've never got that, either. Why you spell those words differently, but all the other words making the same sound don't involve the letter "U". What gives with that?
