I don't think so, the 200w bulb may not run at the same voltage as the 400w does. Some bulb companies make the lower wattage bulbs run as lower voltage and not the same 277v the 400w run at.
See if you can fine a fact sheet on the bulb and check the voltage. I know you can run a 400w in a 1000w ballast just fine.

the bulb / ballast wattage MUST match... sure, the light may WORK in a different ballast, but over an extended period of time that growing requires, there is a good chance that, at the least, the bulb will crack or explode, and at the worst, will cause a fire... if you have made it through a whole grow with mismatched bulb/ballast wattages, then you were very lucky IMO
spend the extra few bones to get the proper bulb, and sleep better at night :twocents:

It's only going to draw as much amps as it takes to light the bulb. Instead of having 20% amperage in reserve (as caculated by the engineer) you have more like 40% so the transformer producess less heat and still put's out the amps.

so are you saying i could use a 200 watt bulb in a 400 watt system, i have a 400 watt sunmaster hps bulb budding my plants and i think its the wrong spectrum to bud with and i want to get a 200 watt bulb so it will be cheaper on hydro

wouldn't the ballast be the same wattage as the light fixture, because the light fixture has 2 stickers on it, 1 sticker has the brand name and wattage which says 1500 watts then theres another sticker on the other side of the fixture that has alot of fine print and 2 blank lines, and on the one line it has the date the light was bought and the other line says 400 watts, i guess i might just get another 400w bulb for budding since i know for sure it will work in this fixture.
No not really, if you can depends on the voltage the bulb requires to ignight. Some don't use the same voltage as others so check the speck sheet so you know before you try. If the voltage is wrong then the bulb may light but it will burn up in about 5 min if you are not careful.Quote:

so would i have to match the voltage for the bulb with the voltage of the fixture or the voltage of the ballast because i know the fixture is 600 v but not to sure what the ballast is. and if the ballast is 400 watts then shouldn't it make less noise then 1000 watt ballast would when turned on, im just woundering about the noise thing because i had a 1000 watt light last year and grew with that and it made less noise then the 400 watt light i have now does
Newer units vibrate less so less noise. You can try to find the noise most of the time it's just a loose part. Old bike tubes make good rubber insulators for some parts to quit down a transformer. Just use common since and you can figure it out.
Just check and make sure the voltage match and the bulb type match. HPS light need igniters (an extra charge of electricity) to get then going. MH does not need igniters.

i was looking on the ballast and i found this sticker with this on it:

250w 60 hz
400w 60 hz
1000w 60hz
HPS

600w 60 hz
1000w 60 hz
would this mean it can run those wattages of bulbs or what does it mean.
There was also little boxes next to them with the 400w 60 hz MH box checked so i think its a MH light i dont know
Ballasts are based on a wattage rating. If you have a 1000 watt ballast there is no reason why you can't use a smaller lamp. BUT if you have a 400 watt ballast DO NOT use a higher wattage lamp! Why? Amp. draw.
When you use a lower wattage lamp, basically your not using the ballast to it's full potential or amperage rating. If you put in a LARGER lamp your now increasing the amperage pull from that ballast past its "safe" rating which means you WILL create heat and have the possibility of burning out the ballast prematurely. GOOD LUCK!!!
Imagine using about 4 1000 watt lamps on a single 110v household outlet. You would be pulling 36 amps though an outlet more than likely rated for 15 amps. BAD KARMA!!!

The ballast determines how much power the bulb gets. If you run a smaller bulb than a ballast is rated for then you are overdriving the bulb.

Right the HPS have igniters. You could run 2 in parallel but you would need to also install some capacitorâ??s as well.

On the AC side The MH work real good, separate ignitors,,,It has a voltage regulator. but having to work with the HPS it is not right yet, and not runing. one day I hope soon. working to cut the power bill, so it has One main Ballast not a bunch... when it comes on it kicks up a little and then falls back, my MH are pulling about 185 VAC and are on full power that is the same as what comes off the ballast. The welder has a voltage regulator you can set the reg. to what you want, and I have one for MH one for HPS, from what I'm seeing one type of light has a little more pull to it then the other

I'm trying a new hps400 ballast with a 430w bulb. Blinding how a ballast can now run a higher watt bulb so quietly and cooler.
