An insightful post by your main man on the social issues..

Hmm.

Lately, I've been doing a lot of soul searching, and have been taking note of various peoples opinions on social issues, how they feel about their country, and things that relate to it.

One thing that we all know, this is a diverse country, with people living different lifestyles.

But here is where we just start to scratch the surface.

The US -- is it really the land of the free, or even quite honestly -- the mindset most "Americans" truly have?

I'm talking to you, Mr. American flag waver.

Before I go on, this is not a "dis" to this wonderful country we live in. I respect the President (I even voted for him), the society we live in, and most people in general.

Let's start with something many people can relate their own problems with -- the Police.

Why is it most of us blindly trust the Police before ever having a shady run on with the Police? You know what I'm talking about. I'm talking to you, the guy who respects and trusts the police, but blindly scoffs at the horror stories many people have told about some occurences that have went down with the police.

Why is it, they have so much power -- yet it doesn't take much education to pursue a job in the police force. Another thing I've noticed, the people who lack real experience in life, who've been sheltered -- there more then likely support the cops in most cases. Now, why is that?

Next, let's take a look at the social concept of interracial marriage. It seems as if the people who are most willing to pain themselves with that red white and blue, are the first to object to a white man marrying a black woman, or vice versa? Why would that ever even be an issue, in the land of the free that so many have died for?

We can go on with Gay Marriage. Why is it the same who bathe themselves in the red white and blue, are also quick to laugh at the prospect of two men wanting to wed? Why is that? Since when was it the American way to neglect love -- the very thing that drives most people to live their own lives in pursue of that happiness.

I can go on, like those who are ignorant yet vocal on how marijuana is such a horrible thing -- and they'll even argue that, with a beer in their own very hand...the irony in that is just laughable.

very good post. Something i read about in college made me think in my sociology class. Police do not have Power, they have Authority. Authority is a social power. Symbolic interactionists look at the titles, and why it is a power symbol. Power is like a mafia don, or a manipulator, or a body builder. There power isn't of a social origin.

I'd propose that "social power", is just as powerful, if not more so than the "power" possessed by a bodybuilder for example.

We can label it based on it's use and context, but power is power.

Wisdom, knowledge, and confidence. That's power.

The way I see it, and I'm not gonna go on here because I don't have much time, is that American society has grown and diversified so rapidly over the years and nobody even noticed. Now people are aware of that, and that's where the problems begin. It's what happens when so much goes on in a nation and nobody bothers to notice, too wrapped up in their own lives. Seriously, in America it seems that people tend to discard things that they hear or see on a day to day basis a lot more easily then in other places. Over the past several years, so many issues piled up and only now people are beginning to speak.

I blame in part the administration and I blame in part the people. The government has been fucking up good in recent years, while generally people are just too eased into pointing at somebody or something of which they disapprove. I guess it could be because of the large difference between the mindset of the American people and the mindset of the American government, or simply the fact that people are only noticing these differences now.

3) National Debt is at an all time high, because of Bush's war, which we by the way will be paying for in higher taxes for years to come.

4) Kornstar why don't you ask Bush his opinion on interaccial marriage, and Gay couples marrying, because im pretty sure he has some different views on those subjects(He is against it).

you complain about the lack of freedom in the US, but dude, no country is perfect. If you lived in Argentina you would complain about the government to and the huge dept the country has, and then if you lived in France you'd complain about riots, and probably would have a different opinion about the police

You know you can put a cop under civil arrest. They can arrest you for possession, but between them arresting you, and the station, they are in possession of an illegal substance, so you could put them under citizens arrest. Also you can cite them for tailgating you (when they are reading your license plate numbers). You don't have to be a cop to arrest somebody.

Attack me for bashing Bush -- you act as if you vote for a guy, you agree with all his policies and everything he does.

Bush is not the problem for the American mindset.

If you are looking at me voting for Bush as the problem, then the post went way over your heads.

This is about the common American, not who runs the country.

IntrepidS is right about people being too wrapped up in their cellphones and purses to give half a shit about the unlimited social injustice going on in this country. They listen to the concensus, look at the status quo, and shrug it off indifferently.

Umm...thats exactly why you vote for someone, but you were obviously too ignorant to learn about his experience before he came into office, his policies, and his views on many of the controversial issues we face today(some of which are rediculous), before you voted for him.

Yes, because with Kerry, we wouldn't have to deal with any of these social issues, right?

They would all just simply be non-issues, right? I mean, the whole face of America would change with Kerry in office, everyone would all of the sudden see social concerns in a different light, right?

Sidenote: It's not like we had the greatest of choices on who to vote for. My vote didn't go for social concerns, more so for homeland security.

I've also heard homosexuality similarly described. Since WHEN do we bring the bible into government? We're supposed to be a nation free of religious restraints, and yet so many of our laws are based on Christian ideals.. and morals.. and opinions. We have "In God We Trust" on the dollar bill BUT.. we're bitching about saying "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance? What an inconsistent crock of shit. A free country? Where you can't even be openly homosexual without fear of being judged around every ignorant corner.

Homeland security isn't really a "social" issue, if that's what you're referring to. I considered it at the time more important then any other issue, really. But like I said, just because you voted for a guy, doesn't mean you all of the sudden have to agree with every opinion the President wants, right? Otherwise anyone who voted for Bush, would be a Christian..
