Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
 Cutting...prepping...setting into 5" netpots w/hydroton.
Materials: 10 gallon/4 plant rubbermaid tub w/7-8 gallons of ph'd*5.8 ROwater
hydroton to fill 4-5" netpots
2-12" airstones
1-dual airpump
4 feet of 1/4" black tubing
razor sharp knife
schultz takeroot (cloning powder)
Optional: 5ml micro-grow-bloom...10ml liquid karma...
1. place airstones on bottom of tub hook up airlines, then run airlines thru holes drilled in top just big enough to allow the lines to feed snugly thru...plug airlines into airpump...fill the res with your pre-mixed nutes...plug in airpump...bubbles :)
2. I cut 4 clones off the bottom of my 2-headed Misty Blue 5-6 inches long,
because I want the end of the cutting right on the bottom of the netpot, supported by the hydroton. This should allow the cutting to 'root and will never have to be moved from it's original environment...Wish me luck :smokin:
A small *note while we wait for upload...I had a complete bubbler cloning how-to/step-by-step, but a moth got into the res' and ate 2/3 of the roots of my 15 clones and killed most of them...5-7 still thriving, I suppose. Anyway, I will still post the thread later. Meanwhile enjoy yet another interesting experiment from 'MadScience Grows'
The idea to try this was suggested by a mmj grower on a fixed income @TYdot who had limited means and couldn't afford to build/buy anymore growing systems, so he tried cloning a mother plant and setting the cutting right into his hyroton. He later claimed to have succeeded. That and a Moth!
So, with that said, "Here we Go", Enjoy, lw :smokin:

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
I am not going to spend alot of time on cloning; that is another thread...
1. The Misty Blue that these were cut from, is a beautiful plant 2nd week of flower. :p
2. Clean them up all the way to the top 2 nodes and trim the bigger fan leaves.
3. Scrape the stem a little to expose the stem to the rooting powder,
and drag the cutting thru the powder.
4. I found that with these big fat clones (hopefully), fill the netpots with a couple of inches of hydroton, then just lightly insert stem with rooting powder into the netpot and hydroton, all the way to the bottom.
5. Carefuly, fill netpot to the top with hydroton...Here is one ready for our bubbler.
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
here is the set-up; all 4 trimmed up and powdered and set in hydroton filled 5" netpots...oh yeah, I almost forgot...I didn't show it, but for an anti-wilt, I use leaf shine by miracle grow(this product has a waxy substance that provides leaves with support, without clogging the pores)...DISCLAIMER; (leaf shine is the only product that I use or ever will use by miracle grow.) As you can see, there is no humidity dome, that is what the anti-wilt is for.
Well, let's all hope for success. Maybe we can all learn something...see you all in 10 days or so, lw :smokin:

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Sound good  But what if you don't have 100% of rooted clones ?
Many growers used bubbler cloning like what you are using. They suggested do not mix nutrient into res until the clones rooted. Just a few drops of super thrive or B52 or Liquid Kama will work better than any nutrient mix. Have a good day.

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
thanks cnd...this is an experiment...it will work, or not. Then all will know.
I don't know what you are asking, "what if you don't have a 100% of rooted clones?" But, I have always had about a 95+% of success and I really only changed the way I put clones in the bubbler...I just harvested close to 3/4lb from my last clones.
...here is a pic of this pm...12 hours and they are standing up looking healthy  ...In my opinion, this shows me that bubbles are moistening up the bottom of the netpots and feeding the cuttings  They will root.

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
I like the idea of the LeafShine. So do you not mist at all?
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
:) I mist them real good with the leaf shine and they stand right up overnight and I might mist once after a week depending on how they look...here is pic I just took to show you my results with my normal bubblecloner 12 days/bbjack and misty blue/2 seperate plants, I'm re-netting these tonight...if you notice blank netpot in back, that was full and thriving all from my big hydro MIsty 2 and a moth ate the roots right off the stems...I caught him in this well getting ready to eat these :( that is why I started these big clones so late. I wanted offspring from this particular plant! :smokin: The moth ate all 7 I had from her/MIsty 2.

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
is place the netpot in hydro system for 3 week veg :D
Now that is results!!! :) :D  and I did entirely with supplies I bought from Wally's...
I also used 3-part nutes w/Liquid Karma and hygrozyme  ...so I broke some taboos here ;) ...time will tell
Here is a pic of the 4 new roots sproting out of netpot, and it has only been 8 days
I threw this closet together for cloning...It will evolve, I promise...
...
for those of you who don't know...I should have reflective material on wall, but I've had a lot of things going on lately; including a new job
so I got lazy...later.lw

This worked real well...kept Mother(Misty Blue) from this project...good thick smoke.
bumped this for new members.lw

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Hey latewood, I remember reading all your posts when I knew nothing and thinking wow.
So you took your clones and went straight to hydroton. Very impressive. Thanks for bumping this up. It's starting to make more sense now.
Tell me about this moth. If the reservoir is full of water, how does the moth live in there long enough to eat the roots off your plants? I would think the moth would drown.
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
the water level is only to bottom/or just below bottom of netpots, bubbles pop...hydroton with root-powdered clone inside gets damp/wet and grows roots...you DO NOT want water all the way up to the point it would drown a moth...you want the plants to seek the moisture, promoting a strong root system...I used to use a single
fluoro tube for rooting, have since changed to cfl/250hps for clones/seedlings...
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Hey Latewood thanks for the explaination about the moth. What differences do you see between the single fluoro tube and cfl/250 hps. Faster growth, bigger plants?
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
at that stage a fluoro is all you need...matter of fact, I remember how good it actually
looked under a single fluoro...I did buy the green/cool light at wally's to go in it.
I would really like to have a 4x4 or 6' fluoro set=up for clones and seedlings...hmmm eventually
the cfl's do great...as a matter of fact I am vegging tomato's and peppers under 250hps/cfl's right now...my first experimental/commercial crop of veggies If I could run a string of cfls???...like a "luau"...It might be enough for veggies
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Does clf mean circular fluoros? What is a green/cool light? 250 hps/cfl's is that a high pressure sodium with circular fluoros for side light? I'm interested in your tomato/pepper crop of veggies using hydro indoor. Please post more. I've got my seedlings under fluoros and they are beautiful to perfection. Thanks.
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
cfl compact fluoro...
green/cool light?...go to Wally's and enter the lighting section...they have a variety of 4' fluorescent tubes...they all have a colorguide towards different spectrums...I personally have had great success with the aqua/green color coded fluoro tube
since I have several lights...I had a diamond 250w hps laying around and decided to veg with it...I also started tomato's and peppers...so In order to get more light coverage...I broke out the 45w/150 cfl's...I have 4

Wow. Could you specify (close as you can) the exact height above the waterline the stem was, and the height above the netpot-bottom that the bottom tip of the stem sits at? Still amazed, thinking that placement of the stem in the hydroton (i.e. how far up from netcup-bottom), and in relation to the waterline, is probably crucial.

I thought I showed this in the thread...but, I keep my water right below...like 1/8"
below the netpots...the stem of the clone must be long enough to reach the bottom of netpot and still be above hydroton...I just have my netpots with hydroton soaking in the water I use in the clonerwhen I trim the cutting, I
dip it in rooting hormone and stickit right into the hydroton to the bottom...
that's it, I then put netpot into bubbler.lw:smokin:

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Danke schon...... I was thinkin' maybe there had to be some hydroton beneath the bottom tip of the stem (the cut just wicking moisture from the clay), but the tip/cut sits all the way down where the spray hits it directly. Thanks

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Hey late, always enjoy rereading your post. Whatever happened to your tomatos and bell peppers?
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
I also started some veges under my 400 HPS lighting system in my hydro system like you, latewood. I had room, so why not? Peas, beans, peppers, and tomatoes. I loooove having my bedroom covered in plants. I just got them started, so it will be interesting to see my results compared to yours

actually the spray hits the netpots and hydroton hydrates and the stem is exposed to the moisture.lw

they are still growin'
those pix were from just the other day...My 1000w agrosun came in; So now I will have 1400 watts MH, 250 hps, in the veg room. I have one more MH to build and add It to my 1000w hortilux in the flower room. Do you think that'll be enough? lol

I don't know if I told you guy's above, but I use pure blend pro with most of the botanicare additives/line for my veggies...
You know my favorite additive is Liquid Karma:thumbsup:

I'm growing romaine under fluoros and they are beautiful. Here's a picture. I've never grown lettuce without slugs and sow bugs. Growing them inside is cool.

Bad ass...Gen I think we should start a veggie thread...matter of fact, I am going to do it now...

Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
Thanks. It was a very good read.
OK I have a question for you. I understand how to do this with clones now, but how would one do the bubbler method when growing from seed? Could I simply germinate in rockwool first then place the rockwool cube into the bubbler setup? Would the medium have to be different?
Thanks
-
Cloning directly to Hydroton/Bubbler x4
yeah, assuming you know how to ph the rockwool...
you plant seed, when roots show outside 1x1 or 1.5x1.5
rw starter, place in netpot fill with hydroton, place in bubbler.
you were exactly right.
this is what I did on my 1st grow...worked great, I accidentally grew one plant almost 8'.
I am going to do 10 clones in a shallow bubbler, just to recheck my past results. I'll post a couple...I already have a shallow early veg-tub, I am going to load-up
I use 3.75" in entpots now...started with 5" and still use them also. I like the 3.75" netpots because you can buy a 3.5" holesaw at the truvalue and drill beautiful tight fitting holes in your hydro tops

not really...rooting is rooting, imho...In my experiences it takes 8-14 days to root, after that, they usually rot.

I read that a guy at treatingyourself.com was doing this experiment...So I did too! Worked 100%
