Diminishing tolerance--what is going on?

Ever since this bad trip I had on the 14th, I have had EXTREMELY LOW tolerances to weed. I mean really fucking low. A few days ago I got blazed off two hits of vaporized weed, which is weaker than most schwag. Friday I inhaled half a volcano bag (about three to four hits) of mid-grade and I got so high I was hallucinating for hours. I woke up several times in the night and was still high.

What the hell is going on? A few weeks ago, half a bag of mid-grade would have gotten me buzzed, at best. I usually take three or four bags at the minimum, and am capable of taking two to three times that without becoming incoherent.

Also, I used to be able to get only so high, despite how much weed I smoked. Once I peaked out, continued smoking would only prolong the high, not necessarily enhance it. That doesn't happen anymore. There's no limit to how high I can get. This may sound awesome at first, but it's not, because when I go overboard, I get paranoid as hell and start having anxiety attacks. I never had a single anxiety attack or even a hint of paranoia until recently. Now I have to be really careful not to smoke too much. But even if I only smoke enough to get relaxed, it's still not particularly pleasant. I start getting nervous even at extremely low doses.

Am I just weird? Has this happened to anyone else? What can I do to lessen the paranoia and anxiety attacks?

I think this is happening as a direct result of my bad trip. I feel like my mind is more fragile now, causing it to react more to psychotropics. I think I'm going to stop smoking for a while. I don't want to stop for good, but I might have to if this doesn't stop. Getting high isn't worth this.

Ive always had a pretty low tolernce but i love it makes weed cheaper because i dont have to smoke as much. If it is happening just accept theres nothing wrong with a low tolerence. i used to smoke unhealthy amounts of weed and started having terrible trips so i just slowed down on how much i smoke. Also just smoke until you get high then stop.

I know EXACTLY how you feel bro, same shit happens to me now. But I still have to smoke a lot. But if I smoke by myself then I get really paranoid. It gets bad, I mean I hate to say this but I think what you're experiencing is early stages of schizophrenia, that's been going on for me for just about a month now for me maybe a little longer. But when I'm high I usually feel "Crazy" like I'm having a crazy mental breakdown. But when I'm sober I'm back to normal. Like I completely freak out if its at night and I'm really fucking high, I get so scared for NO REASON. Sometimes its crippling. I'd say either counter it with some booze or just relax and smoke only with friends or small amounts by yourself.

Also when I smoke with people I seem fine. Well if you figure it out be sure to tell me because I know what you're talking about and it SUCKS!

I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. I forgot to mention this, but the extent of my paranoia is related to how many people are present as well. Five or six days ago I smoked with five or so people around me and it was like old times. No paranoia. I didn't have much weed at all, but it was enough to get me high and I didn't feel uncomfortable. And I get scared for no reason. Friday when my girlfriend left the room for a few minutes I got all panicky and started feeling like I was going to die. I mean, I know I'm not really going to die, but when it's happening I really feel like I will. And if I start thinking about dying or anything negative, it just gets so much worse. I could barely move Friday night. It was horrible. I've considering drinking because I know alcohol tends to lessen the psychotic effects of marijuana, but I'm not sure I'm convinced the answer to my problems is to use more mind-altering substances.

I just looked up some stuff about schizophrenia and things don't look too good for me. It tends to onset in late adolescence (I'm 19) and can be triggered by a stressful event (This bad trip I had was the most stressful event of my life). I haven't been hallucinating when sober or anything like that, but I have been having random spells of intense depression and anxiety. God I hope I'm not developing schizophrenia. I've read that use of psychotropics like marijuana and shrooms can trigger a latent schizophrenia, but I didn't think it would happen to me. I haven't had any history of mental illness aside from depression, and neither has anyone in my family.

I should probably stop smoking, but sometimes I get to feeling really bad and think if I toke up it will help. Sometimes it helps, but lately it hasn't really. I don't know, maybe I'm just fucked.

Do you guys ever get 'relapses'? Like 16 hours after you smoke everything will be normal than all of a sudden everything goes crazy and it's like you're high for a few moments.

ya, i get relapses sometimes.i didnt know that is what they were though. igot one at school once, and it lsted for about half an hour. i really couldnt explain it, but i felt really stoned.

Yea, i had that a few days ago. I just started weirding out.

Well, i'm not a doctor, but i would say sit back on the smoking for about a month and your tolerance should build up again. If not, i don't really know what to say :(

I do, but for me these "relapses" don't involve feeling high, but rather sudden decreased cognitive function, extreme sleepiness, and a general feeling of being in a half-awake stupor. It happened to me the other day in differential equations class. I was sitting there taking notes, then suddenly I realize I've been staring off into space the last twenty minutes and I'm completely lost. I also tend to feel confused a lot, forget what I'm doing, etc. I have had some strange visual effects come on at random times. Not really hallucinations, but just random spots and effects in my peripheral vision.

happens to me too, i could smoke as much as i want some nights, while other nights 5 pulls will put me on the ground. recently its been like 3-4 pulls and im out. it sucks.

Oh yeah, my sense of touch sometimes is really weird, too. My skin just feels tingly or itchy and everything I pick up feels weird and cold. In fact, it's happening right now. I've been trying to do homework but can't concentrate for the life of me. :(

Now that I think about it, I seem to be having an awful lot of side effects from doing something everyone says has little to no negative side effects. I think I'm quitting for at least a month. Then maybe I'll try again and see what happens.

you should be happy dude, smoke less to get highter... i cant see the downside to that.

a relapse is when you are clean from drugs and or alcohol for a period of time and then you use again.

I know what you're going through; I still experience those moments every once in awhile. You getting blazed easier than usual is a reverse-tolerance, which also appeared in me a couple years ago. I used to be able to smoke an 1/8 like nothing, often ghosting my hits, then one day found myself blazed off a bowl. I think it was around this time when I started smoking by myself more often. When I'm around people, I don't think about the high very much, and I focus on the conversation and the experience, whereas when I'm alone, I'm forced to be alone with my thoughts and my concentration often strays to negativity. What if this, what if that. That's when the paranoia comes in. You said that in one particular instance of the anxiety, it occured right as your girlfriend left the room, so it has to do with where your concentration lies, no? Weed, at least for me and many others, is something that's best done with a head free of worries, responsbilities, etc, and once those enter your head, the high goes to hell.

I can tell you almost 100% that you do not have schizophrenia. I mentally Ill person has no idea that they are mentally ill. I of course dont have a degree (yet) im a 3rd year psych student though. I have had a simular experince though, normally i can smoke multiple bowls an hour. Then all of the sudden 6 months ago a few hits would get me blazed out of my mind. I started worrying and wondering why, and while driving I would think every car was a cop. (luggage racks) LOL. Anyways it got kinda bad for about a week i thought i was gonna have to give up smoking becuase of the paranoia. So actually i quit for 4 days, then tried again. But when i smoked i did it in my house in my room with some Bob and a couple of buddies. I didnt try getting stoned off my ass or anything like that. Just a nice relaxing puff and pass circle, and i didnt experince any paranoia. My tolerence was kinda screwey for the next 2-3 days then I was fine everything back to normal. If anything i would say your paranoia might be caused becuase your so worried about it. Next time you smoke do it with a couple buddies, try to relax as much as possible, maybe drink some calming tea or herbs. Light some relaxing incense and just try to make the whole experince as pleasent as possible and see what happens.

I know that was a lot of opinion, but my experince sounds close to yours. So I think if you try that out it might really help. If not I would highly recomend you quit for at least a week or two, becuase that much mental stress isnt healthy either. GL man, and just toke and try to chill!

okay something similiar happened to me last summer. one day i took 2 hits of a bowl and got really fucking high so i figured it was prolly just amazing weed. but than it was happening everytime i smoked. the highs were getting really scary nd i was starting to worry a lot.

what i did was i just took the hits it took me to get high which was practically a hit or two. than one day i had 3 decent hits off a jay nd i barely got high. so than later that night i got about 8-10 hits off a bowl nd i was more than normal. but lately my tollerance is like 5-8 hits

Just relax dude! You had a bad trip, and now everytime you smoke, you start worrying about bad trips and next thing you know, you're having another one. Just gotta be like fuck that shit and keep rolling along.

Dude, i got a bad trip on shrooms las spring...i was hallucianting in my showing afteer one hit of hash...and this stressful experience was going on for a month, because i choose not to stop smoking for more than a week right after myu bad trip...but after a month i was back on the track! and now i smoke a lot so, it is a normal state of the mind...youre not going insane or schizophreniac or whatever...it is a normal reaction from the body...now tell me, on what dope did you have a bad trip??/sorry i didn't read the whole thread!

Well, my first (and worst) bad trip was on the 14th. I only had 1.75g of P. Cubensis, but I smoked two bags of really potent weed with my volcano because I'd heard that smoking can enhance the trip. This weed was called "Big Bud." Here is a picture of an actual bud I had.

Recently I've just been using mid-grade or weaker. You can read my original post about my bad trip here if you're interested.

Thanks for the counsel, everyone. I'm not going to smoke weed for a while, probably at least a couple weeks. And maybe if I only smoked indicas it would help? Anyway, I have to make sure my mind recovers fully, and I'll probably avoid full-fledge hallucinogens like shrooms and salvia for a very long time if not forever. Looking forward to when I can toke up again without worry.

theres your problem right there, thats some nice ass bud you have there and smoking that in a volcano is just asking for trouble if you have a weak tolerence to weed, try rolling a joint and taking a couple hoots and putting it out then see how you feel, o and be careful with that vape its reallly easy to go over baord with the volcano and hitting that thing to much can really mess with your tolerence....it may be dare i say it....TOO EFFICIENT A WAY OF SMOKING!

Wish I had this problem, continual toking for too long and the intense highs I used to get are no longer forthcoming.

you'll get that if you bake out skunky shit for long periods of time (getting stoned constantly for a few days at a time) and you stop smoking for a few days. you'll have episodes. i think it's the THC still stuck to your lipids.

Happened to me kinda. Quit for a week or two and get a different strain of bud and you should be fine. When it happened to me I stoped for a week got all my things back in order then got with some good friends a chill spot and the high's got good again. Never hulucinations for me though.

Wow, um...I'm not sure what to say. that could be serious man. you need to put down the bud for awhile and get your shit together. ive done enough psychoactives to know when i need to stop for awhile and get my head straight and my body clean. i cant believe someone studying psychology told you its no big deal, what was the bad trip on? shrooms or dxm or something? if its DXM it could be serious, try olney's lession, seritonin syndrom and psychosis. you should get clean to begin with and then talk to someone who's trained to deal with this like your doctor or a psychologist. i dont want to sound like the prude dick among you but ive gone pretty far into my own head, not only with chemicals, and it could be serious if you let it get out of hand which it could happen if you dont deal with problems in your head. the human psyche is very powerful. id rather no one bitch me out for trying to help him either because im getting sick of that shit and im sorry if i sound like an uptight worrying bitch. i hope you get your head set man. Well, it's been about eight months now since my bad trip and I still cannot smoke weed without freaking out. I've tried several times, but even just one hit of schwag makes me very uncomfortable. A couple weeks ago I had two medium hits from a bong and had to lie down for a few hours until things became less intense.

I've done some research and believe I have Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder. My doctor diagnosed me with Panic Disorder, which is common for people with HPPD. The effects of the HPPD faded after a few months, but use of weed or opiates tends to revive them.

I find this knowledge very depressing, as it seems it's common for weed to do this to people with HPPD. Sometimes they can smoke again after some period of time, but sometimes it takes many years. Weed was my one great love. I just wish I could blaze again like in the good old days. :(

Yeah, Shai. Maybe subconsciously you panic because of your bad trip and because it was caused by a drug?

I dunno, I'm not a psychologist.

My advice, though, is to take the tiniest of hits. Try one little hit from a pipe and then go lie down. I also suggest therapy -NOT INVOLVING DRUGS-. Best therapists are always your best friends. Get someone willing to listen to you and just talk about your bad trip and everything.

What you are going through is medically defined as "Reverse Tolerance" it happens to alot of people who use the same drugs or alcohol chronically or on a consistant basis. It is part of a whole cycle of medically defined stages of drug or alcohol use. Below I will exlpain how it happens with marijuana.

Remember when you first started smoking weed and just a bit could get you BLAZED? That is when you are new to the drug and your body has no idea how to handle it. As time goes on your body gets more and more used to having THC in its system, and can deal with it accordingly, making you freak out less, but need more and more to get higher and higher. As time goes on you reach a peak, or a plateu of tolerance for weed, your body can still only take so much no matter how used to it you have gotten. This can lead to a short, or VERY long period of time where it takes ALOT to get you baked, but your tolerance never increase any more than it already is. Some people just stop here, and its really hard for them to get as baked as they once were off of so little weed. Others, on the other hand, sometimes stimulated by experiances with other drugs, really bad trips, or just a massive "overload" of THC to where the body can't take processing it anymore, go through "reverse tolerance." This is where your body is basically so tired from processing the drug that it can't keep up anymore, and just a little will FUCK YOU UP, and usually with some not so pleasent side effects.

The way to solve the problem of having to high of a tolerance or going through a really really bad reverse tolderance trip is by quitting for a few weeks at a time, let your body recover and not be used to having drugs in you for a while, remember what its like to feel normal. This will save you TONS of money on weed in the long run, and make sure that you know you can quit whenever you want, and help prevent agianst mental addiction.

Take a break man, then have a blast in two weeks! about a month or two later, take another break. Repeat as necessary. :rasta:

It took me six attempts to even get high. For several months I had to smoke copious amounts of weed to get blazed. My tolerance didn't decline until I tried mushrooms, and then it spiralled down immediately. Not only did my tolerance decline, but effects of smoking became unpleasant, triggering flashbacks, hallucinations, anxiety, the works.

I'm 100% sure that for a few months I had HPPD. It's rare, but users of psychedelics can potentially develop this disorder, especially after having an extremely bad experience. It's very rare for this to happen from just one trip, but apparently mine was that bad, and I'm the lucky rarity. :(

But like I said, the constant anxiety, visual effects, and confusion faded after a few months. So in a way I really am lucky, I guess. For some people it takes longer, and for a few it never goes away. But use of certain drugs, especially marijuana, brings back the HPPD. Mushrooms ruined my favorite drug for me.

Check when I made this thread. Yes, this happened in October. I've taken some very long breaks, but to no avail. My longest period of complete abstinence was about four months, but it didn't help. I think until I learn differently, I'm just going to abstain from weed completely for another six months or so. Then I'll try again. Even if it takes years, I just hope I can smoke again someday.

OMG I had exactly the same thing the other day and I smoked a joint in my room and suddently felt like pure fear. Nothing caused it and I knew it was just the drug but for about 2 hours that seemed like 2 years I was shaking and thought I had lost my mind.

I found there are 2 solutions:

1. Don't smoke alone. atleast not for now. Having people around you keeps you from falling into your own world and dwelling on depressing shit.

2. I found that when I'm high on draw I may become totally incapacicated but if my subconcious tells me something is wrong I can snap out of it. EG I can sit in a chair with my eyes closed and headphones on and be literally paralyzed but if someone walked into the room I would sort of snap out of it. I found the experience is exactly like waking up out of a dream except I had my eyes open and was fully concious.

This sounds cheesy but you need to take control of your subconcious which is infact quite easy on weed. You need do keep away from dwelling on negative thoughts and feelings.

Trust me, get stoned, listen to some relaxing music and think about sex. If a negative thought comes into your head just drive it out, don't try to understand it that makes it worse. Firsat start by taking three hits. Then put it away. Wait 40 minutes before having more and even then only do it if you want to.

me 2 bro its fuckin weird. When i first start smoking my tolerance was low. Ive been smoking nearly everyday for about a year and a half now and like for the past month or so ive been getting incredibly smacked off pot. Its kinda embarrassing ill be smoking with a bunch of noobs and be completly wasted and i cant figure out why. I always thought weed had a regular tolerance where the morey ou smoke the more you need but recently its been the opposite. its pretty cool tho
