Report no cancer from marijuana longer life

No Link Between Pot Smoking, Cancer Wed Oct 19, 7:02 PM ET



WEDNESDAY, Oct. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Even though they're chemically similar, marijuana smoke is less likely than tobacco smoke to cause cancer, according to one expert review of the literature.

The review, by Dr. Robert Melamede of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, noted that tobacco and marijuana smoke differ in a number of ways, particularly in the fact that marijuana smoke contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) , while tobacco smoke contains nicotine. Nicotine increases the cancer-promoting effects of smoke, while THC reduces those effects, he explained.


And even though THC and nicotine act on related cellular pathways, they bind to different receptors to activate these pathways, the review found. Cells in the lungs and respiratory passages are lined with nicotine receptors but these cells don't appear to have THC receptors. This may explain why smoking marijuana has so far not been linked with lung cancer, a major cause of death from cigarette smoking.


Research has also shown that marijuana kills cancer cells and reduces tumor growth. This is, in part, because marijuana reduces the formation of blood vessels that nourish tumors.


However, the review warned that the effects of marijuana are complex and sometimes contradictory. It also noted that many people use marijuana and tobacco together, and the two drugs may interact in complex ways.


While some governments are reluctant to approve marijuana for medicinal use, the review noted that there's increasing evidence that marijuana can improve the lives of patients with a broad range of health problems, including insomnia, AIDS, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.

I like the way that now, when professionals are saying that Cannabis has less chance of causing cancer than tobacco, anti-Cannabis people are still trying to say "well weed CAN cause cancer, because it's sometimes smoked with tobacco". Lol That's like saying ice-cream can cause aids when injected with a dirty syringe.

nice one, its so true. they say weed can cause cancer when smoked with tobacco, fucking dumbasses. Tryin to make it sound bad. urgh if i had my way...

It has been proven to CURE certain types of Cancer in rats. Or mice. Or deer, I don't know. How it can cure and provoke at the same time, seems impossible, to me.

Weed doesn't cause cancer. The risks come from the damage done to the lungs as a result of weed. When they're saying "cannabis cures cancer in mice" I'm sure they're using THC in a vapor or oral dose and not blowing smoke into the mouse cages. :)

I notice bias can go both ways. the title of this thread says "no cancer from marijuana" while the posted article says "less likely to cause cancer". just saying this whole debate over weed is due to both sides obscuring the facts.

that, and I can't believe it doens't cause lung cancer at all, unless there's enough THC to block every single carcinogen contacting every single cell in the lungs. one way or another, smoking causes constant cellular irritation.

actually, we have melatonin sublinguel tablets in my cupboard that can help you get to sleep, so I'll keep that in mind. however, all I was saying is that just because it creates cancer fighting chemicals, doesn't mean there's enough to make you 100% immune to cancer.

and you don't have to bitch me out in a condescending way just because I pointed out that we shouldn't make exagerated claims just because it furthers ones opinion. god knows we get angry at the DEA and DARE for doing that enough.

The Melatonin pills won't do anything compared to smoking a joint. Marijuana is the best way to raise Melatonin levels.

Italian researchers proved, in Humans, that your levels go up 4,000%, two hours after smoking a joint.

There is no better way. Especially, if you're gonna smoke it.
