What's the strongest hurricane to hit where you're staying at?
The first time I visited my Brother, after he moved to Virginia Beach, there was hurricane out to sea and the waves were 10 ft.
I've been through more than a few since I moved here. They're pretty cool.
A Category 3 was the strongest. Hurricane Floyd hit Virginia Beach, directly, and a little town, 45 minutes inland, flooded like New Orleans, maybe worse.
Franklin, VA.

Frances (from last year I think) had some small effects around my town. Two of our pecan trees lost major branches and had to be cut with an chainsaw to be able to move them. The first branch to fall was about 10 feet away from my room. It fell during the night, I remember waking up to the sound but I was too tired to care at the time. The second branch fell mid-day the following day. That's about the worst I can remember, most of the times hurricans just send us the rain and cool breeze...
Edit:This has only been the second time we got out of school because of weather. Our school let out for around 3-4 days. Another school in a neighboring county got out for nearly 2 weeks.

Yeah, the last Hurricane, to hit here, took out a pig section of the huge pier we have. That was two years ago and I left my apartment in lieu of my Mother's house.
We stacked everything up before we left and one of the guy's that stayed here said the water surrounded most of the complex. I live right at the end of the first inlet in the Chesapeake Bay and when the sea level is a higher-than-average, the tide will come into my parking lot.
Rest In Peace, my 1993 Cutlass Supreme that drowned in one of the tides.
With Ophelia lurking off the coast, the winds whipped around all weekend, but right now, we have 11 MPH, sustained, east winds.

Lily, aren't you from Ireland, or something? Were you on vacation in Puerto Rico?

Funny, I lived in Florida for 5 years and never experienced a hurricane. When I lived in Shanghai China we had a typhoon( the Pacific version of a hurricane) and that was pretty crazy. Fortunately it wasn't too big but it did drop a shit load of rain. Something like 15 centimeters in 24hrs. I was living in a dorm at the time and to get out and go to class we had to wade through 3 feet of water.
The worst natural disaster I ever lived through was the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. Our house was only about 5 miles from the epicenter. I was at work when it happened and it was fucking nuts. Everything was total chaos afterwards and it took me 3 over hours to drive the 20 miles back home. Listening to the radio on the way home made it seem like the end of the world "San Francisco's Marina District is on fire", "We have reports that downtown Los Gatos has been destroyed", "Downtown Hollister an Santa Cruz have been destroyed", "The Bay Bride has collapsed", etc etc. Having been through that I can really empathize with the people in New Orleans even though I know their situation is far worse.

I experienced a tropical storm in Costa Rica...
We had a hotel w/ a large glass sliding door, and we opened it for one second, and no joke, the rain was hitting the wall. The wall was at least 15 feet from the door. so it was pretty much driving horizontally.

we got a day off school last year because a hurricane was "supposed" to hit toronto and the gta area, and they feared for staff and students safety, we had a light breeze and some rain showers that day, it was a nice relaxing day off

Sounds like down here in Virginia Beach. If they think that it's gonna snow, an inch, they shut down the schools. I remember a few times that they had cancelled schools and it didn't snow one flake.

My last hurricane was in Puerto Rico in San Juan. Its my only hurricane ive been through. And just from being in that one scares the hell out of me about whats going on in New Orleans. Seeing this man just saying how he lost his wife, daughter, and three grandkids and he could survive if he could just find one of them, was so terrible. And just the aftermath, things like that two babies died of dehydration....its too much...

Same here in Charlottesville. In Albemarle county, with all the backroads, we miss school pretty easily. When I lived in Vermont though, we hardly EVER missed a day of school. They were always ready for snow. It could've snowed several feet, and my brothers and I would be waiting at the bottom of my driveway for the bus. In regards to the hurricane, i've only experienced Isabel, we got 40mhp winds and 70mph gusts, but that was the extent of that. We lost power for over a week. I'm so obsessed with hurricanes, and i've never even directly experienced one. Oh well.

Uh Oh, Is 'RUSH' alright? I hope they didn't get Avril Lavigne when it swept through Canada.
And how can I forget 'The Kids In the Hall', they are all fine, right?

Speaking of Ophelia, as the winds were 11 MPH out of the East before, they are now 12 MPH out of the East, the thing ain't moving.
