I was just wondering what everybodies views on homelessness were, and to what does society owe them?
I was homeless for a year.
Society is a big cash cow, its up to you to milk.
I do think we should help homeless people get back on their feet, and soup kitchens the such are fine. now what I don't agree with is this great concern with making sure heroin addicts don't get sick, don't die, get diseases, etc. I mean now they're talking about getting nurses to inject heroin for them, we're bending over backwards to keep as many street junkies alive as possible. if you ask me, let them die in the hole they dug themselves.
no offense, but i feel bad for homeless who don't fuck up there lifes doing stupid shit like becoming crack addicts. That's there fault. Though addiction is a bitch, they should've never started.
but people who lose homes in disasters, etc. Get cut from jobs... i feel bad. I try to donate cans to food shelters each year
I would, however, support helping out junkies if they agreed to get into a supervised program to clean themselves up and put in a real effort.
yes^^^^^
but alot of homeless people still do crack and H even though they know they need to stop.
It's hard to explain
but sometimes i just don't feel sorry for major drug addicts that have no will to stop.
maybe it's because my friend was a meth addict, Swore to me she was gonna quit, then did got hooked again... and now she's not as cool :-( She's not homeless, but people need to go cold turkey or get classes or something.
Thats how i feel, what really gets to me is when you see handicap people who are living on the street, its not fair that somebody with a mental dissability is living on the street.
excactly!
i feel bad for people who are handicapped.
i thought that you could live off of some type of money if your handicapped
it's really sad though
I feel very sorry for them. Spent a month in downtown Vancouver working for Homeless people at a soup kitchen. All of them have a story. Only a dumbass would think that they are less than people. That pisses me off. (I'm not directing this at anyone. just so you know.)
God bless the homeless and the people who help the homeless.
Alright you motherfuckers, U got a JUnkie jew right here, on the subject , and I would ripe every bone in your body if u dis me.I have been a heroine Addict for over a decade, and I use weed stave off cravings like a sonna-of -a-bitch.If u met me on the streets,I would make u think twice, only cause u don't get to be my age and still live in America being a heroine addict off the streets, cause ur either in prison fer breakin teeth or stealin teeth.Matter of fact,if u even post on this site,u gotta be liberal, cause this site is a liberal site ,if u gotta question what that means Ur a fuckin fool.IN cannada, Mark Emery, helped create a hospice for addicts that use the needle, where there are nurses on site to monitor the addict so he (or she) does not die or infect themselves with a virus or bacteria,Whilst shooting up.It is the same in amsterdam.Mf greg ,I am sorry for such the anger, I just feel that way because,i feel very strongly abuot the neglected and abused, and those are the homeless and addicted. And I am one of those on different levels.Just like a jew I am pitamized, god is great,I know, and feel very strongly about addiction, but not homlessness, even though sometime they run hand in hand. Sorry for the Anger and bitterness at the begining,Just maybe we can make people understand.
We dont have a problem with homeless over here, but my view on homeless are socity don't owe them jack its no ones fault but there own they choose to be that way, as for people who are homeless due to natural dieasters/job cuts... i feal that we should try to help them get on there feet
Good post, shiva.
Dn't some of you stop to think that maybe alot of homeless people are addicting to drugs because they're homeless?
Homelessness is an inevitable downside to capitalism (if you can say downside.. the whole fucking thing is a downside). In a society that breeds people to try to attain more than everybody else there are bound to be those who succeed and those who fail at obtaining. And then, because they have less we treat them like they are less, because our society deems anybody with less money or possessions as inferior.
I don't think anybody can accuse any homeless person of anything until they've been there themselves.
ive seen it on tv, a programme about this very subject. Homless heroin addict. Taking heroin helps them through, and eases every pain and worry they have. Im guessing thats quite alot. But the fact they are homeless is a major cause of the addiction, because as i said Its the only thing that can make them happy, fuck if i had ruined my life id take all the drugs. They take you out of this world.
That's the thing, alot of people are homeless through no fault of their own. People automatically assume that if you're homeless it's because a) you can't get a job, or you can't keep a job, b) you're a drunk or c) you're a drug addict. Sure, sometimes it might be one of those things, but I guarantee you most of the time it's not.
Like I said before, in a society in which succeeding is having more than the next guy, there are always going to be people with less. It's inevitable and it sucks.
"We're in one of the richest countries in the world,
but the minimum wage is lower than it was thirty five years ago.
There are homeless people everywhere.
This homeless guy asked me for money the other day.
I was about to give it to him and then I thought he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol.
And then I thought, that's what I'm going to use it on.
Why am I judging this poor bastard.
People love to judge homeless guys. Like if you give them money they're just going to waste it.
Well, he lives in a box, what do you want him to do? Save it up and buy a wall unit?Take a little run to the store for a throw rug and a CD rack? He's homeless.
I walked behind this guy the other day.
A homeless guy asked him for money.
He looks right at the homeless guy and says why don't you go get a job you bum.
People always say that to homeless guys like it is so easy.
This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants.
Outside his pants. I'm guessing his resume isn't all up to date.
I'm predicting some problems during the interview process.
I'm pretty sure even McDonalds has a "underwear goes inside the pants" policy.
Not that they enforce it really strictly, but technically I'm sure it is on the books."

GHoSToKeR is right, homelessness is an inevitable consequence of capitalism. We have enough land and resources and all that to adequately provide food, clothing, shelter and medical attention to every single person on the planet, but we don't do that because most of the wealth in a capitalist society is concentrated into the hands of a wealthy few (Bill Gates alone owns as much wealth as the bottom 45% of American households combined, and I'm sure his dirt-poor Third World sweatshop slaves work much much much harder than he ever has in his life). When you have this immense concentration of wealth, which by the way is growing every year, the only people really capable of using the vast resources of our techno-industrial civilization for the benefit of society are the rich, and they won't do it unless they can somehow get richer in the process. If they didn't make all their decisions on whether or not they would make more money, they wouldn't be so rich in the first place. Because there is no money for the rich in building shelter for everybody, they just don't do it. As long as capitalism is around, there will always be homeless people; only a socialist economy could satisfy the basic needs of all members of society.
guess their fucked, capitalism isnt going anywhere my anarchist friend.
Everything is temporary, and capitalism is no exception. Every form of society eventually gives way to a new form. People always find ways to improve the way society is structured. To assert that this is the end of the line, sociologically and economically speaking, is ridiculous.
also note that homeless rates have declined oner the corse of the last 3 years,im sure a real shocker to most.

Holland has higher taxes due to the homes they provide for homeless. There are really no homeless people there because they are all given shelters and food and stuff.....the taxes arent too crazy because holland is a pretty easy place to live in to begin with but its nice how they treat the homeless...the dutch people dont mind...weed makes everyone happy...
i know some homeless people most of them live downtown under bridges i acctually buy weed from some of them so they arent exactly broke they just chose not to be a part of society some of them even goto my school. so i have no problem with it. i just prefer to have a roof over my head when i sleep.
It by a case by case scenario.
Homeless usually choose to be homeless. There are certain circumstances. However a panhandler, if he sits in one spot, could make as much as $30 dollars an hour. I'm not joking. However morals vary from each of the homeless, and some choose not to leach off society, but are unable to cross the barrier due to variables under their control.
But the homeless do deserve some support from us.
I saw that on tv, that whole skit, cant remember who said it.Quote:

BUT and htis is important...You cant use that fact to justify treating any human being with indignity and discrediting thier humanity. But it also means, at least in my eyes, that you can only go so far, people need to walk on their own. Its a big boy thing, you NEED to provide for yoruself, even if your a gimp. This isnt india, this isnt nepal, where mothers break and deform their childrens limbs if they are in the beggar caste, so they may be pitiful enough to garner free meals from even the hardened passerby. So suck it up, go to a program, confrom, obey, and work hard, then when your doign well enough you can buy your freedom, and do waht you want to do, go where you want to go.
Freedom=Money=choice=controll its a euroborous argument.
