Our Differences

The other day I took my son for his physical. His doctor told me that now is the time that most kids start to ask questions about sex. His suggestion was to bring up sexaulity to my son, not explicitally, just to carefully ask him some questions first.

I asked him if he had started to notice any differences between the girls and boys at his school. He said, "Yes, girls are dumb and gross and boys aren't. Sierra tries to kiss me with her gross lips in the cafeteria and on the bus!! She says I'm her boyfriend and that we're going to the prom when we're in high school. I told her that I don't want a stupid girlfriend but she doesn't listen. She's dumb and gross and bossy like my sisters."

His answers were funny but I think they also show that he is no way ready to start learning about sex. I wondered how parents here have handled "the talk" or how your parents told you about sex. I remember my dad giving me a book about sex when I was about 10 (an age approperiate book, with questions, answers and some pictures). He cleverly included it in a stack of regular kid's books and gave them to me all at once.

I never had that talk. They expected the school to teach me.

MJ....I am in the same boat. My daughter was 6 in March...and the questions started coming...."Do you have to be married to have babies?" (Of course I answered with an emphatic YES...it's my CHILD for God's sake!). So then she proceeds to tell me that "Daddy's brothers are daddies, and they aren't married...." Okay..well, "Some people do it backwards." "Can I do it backwards?" Emphatic NO! Yesterday, she wanted to know how babies get out of your belly. A VERY WELL timed visit from the neighbor squashed that one--but I am NOT prepared for this!

She is 6, and on her 3rd "boyfriend". Harmless, really....until she asked her dad if Zachary (the boyfriend) could come over for a slumber party. Lord help me!

My daughter had a kissing incident with a boy at school and her pre-K teacher handled by telling them there's no kissing until you get your drivers license.

I had a very clinical talk with her older sister when she was still a pre-teen. It was easy because she grew up around farms and witnessed birth and animal screwing regularly. I gave her lots of info, then added a caveat that she should wait until she's truly in love. I told her that she'd meet some awesome prince-like guy in college and wouldn't it be amazing to have waited? I couldn't imagine not being able to talk to my girls about sex. It's life and death these days.

It's okay to be a hypocrit as a parent. Up until a few years ago, my primary goal in life was to screw as many chicks as possible, with the idea that 'there's nothing like something new' (Trent Reznor).

That made me laugh--thanks! My husband grew up on a farm, so the whole "farm animal screwing" thing must be the way it's done! LOL

Well, with my girl, I don't think she's necessarily curious about SEX, per se....just curious in general. About EVERYTHING. I have NO issue at all talking to her about things I think she'll understand. It's just that I've found with her that if she doesn't really understand the "concept" of the discussion, it tends to lead to more questions that go on forever (and have nothing to do with the subject at hand!).

I am certainly not relying on the school system to teach either of my kids ANYTHING about important "life decisions", nor is their responsibility to raise my kids. TEACH them? yep. But not raise them.

I'm having a really hard time telling when it's right to actually have some sort of talk with him. He just doesn't seem mature enough or really even care for girls at all. My oldest daughter, on the other hand, says she has 3 boyfriends, Bret, Tanner, and Jarrod, but Tanner's her favorite. :rolleyes: She's a handful already, and I don't want to wait with her. Thank God my youngest daughter is only 2!!

Lol, Irie, I did it backwards, too. My husband and I have been together for almost 10 years but married for less than 5. My two oldest kids are 8 1/2 and 5 1/2. ;) For the sake of argument, I just always say that I have been married for the length of time that we've been together.

On an even better note....my husband and I had our first date on New Year's Eve and had our first child in October of the same year!! You do the math. Lol. Oh no, maybe Misstreeny was right!! Haha, just kidding.

How old is your daughter? I fear I'm running out of time with my 6 year old--as far as giving her more details on "things". She found a tampon in my purse (UNUSED, of course!) and asked if it was for cleaning your ears. Yikes!

My parents didnâ??t give me any info, and the schools said zilch â?? so I learned about it like everybody else in the cities did for generations: in the gutter.

yeah the school system is fucked gr 4-8 every single year the same thing was tought we learned and labelled the female parts and the males, then in gr 9 they told us about abstinence(that thing where you dont fuck) and that we should do it and if we did screw we would most surely die of an STD or STI so yeah what im trying to say is dont try and leave it up to the school cause they barely teach your kids jack
