Federal Prisons to recieve Lethal Electrified Fences

Seven high-security federal prisons will be getting lethal electrified fences in a $10 million project intended to reduce the number of perimeter guards needed.

The 12-foot-high "stun-lethal" fences, similar to ones used at some state prisons, can be set to deliver a shock if touched once, and a fatal jolt if touched a second time.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons expects to award contracts for the fences in late fall, spokeswoman Traci Billingsley said. "This new technology will serve as new security and help us to deter potential escapes, allow us to operate more cost-effectively by reducing the guard towers, the staffing at some of our guard towers," she said.

Judy Freyermuth of the Federal Prison Policy Project, a nonprofit prison reform group in suburban Atlanta, predicted the hoped-for savings will never materialize.

"How many times have you read of an escape from a federal prison? None," Freyermuth said.

Mike Allen, president of Crowley Co. in Minneapolis, said he is unaware of any deaths or injuries caused by a lethal or stun-lethal prison fence in the United States. Crowley is part of a team assembling a bid for the federal prison job.

The fences at slated for two prisons in Coleman, Fla., and prisons in Tucson; Terre Haute, Ind.; Hazelton, W.Va.; Pine Knot, Ky.; and Pollock, La.

Arizona has encountered no problems with an 8,000-volt stun-lethal fence it installed at its Florence prison last August, said Tony Zelenak, Corrections Department construction manager.

Personally, I see more harm than good coming from this Project. What if a Inmate throws another inmate into this fence twice, or even a Guard? This fence would become more of a weapon than protection.

Oh how wonderful. the perfect defensive position for the concentration camps slated for the new world order.

i think i prefer this to the 25 man gaurd teams on the fence with m-16's.

thats how it always starts. the take a bad thing and then you fall for it then they use it to creep on the good things


they use the amber alerts to find missing kids....conditioning you to tell on your neighbours...good practice for hunting terrorists.

its a ridiculous idea because youre just picking one kid out of thousands upon thousands. im not trying to be a bad guy but do you know how many false reports those alerts generate and how many people get questioned that have nothing to do with the incident. theres too much potential for abuse and didnt you read in the paper somewhere that both amber alert successes had little to do with the actual amber system??

theres room for abuse in everything man?i dont doubt innocent people are questioned but when it comes to a innocent childs life,ya know.not to mention that it has saved a few lives.

you cant scrap a program because there "is room for abuse",that not how things work.

nope...thats not what i think. i said theres TOO MUCH potential for abuse. why not use one of the millions of cameras that do nothing except invade privacy. they work swell...except in the case of an actual terrorist attack...then they just malfunction.

the amber alert gets the word out quickly about child abductions and increases the chances of that little boy or girl being rescued.

i will take that over the chances of abuse anyday.

lol. yeh right...the word out quickly. you mean so that they dont have to interrupt any important news footage concerning which politician is showing us his ass next? get a clue, we got along just fine before. you think putting some kids name on a billboard while people drive underneath helps?

i know for a fact it helps.

because the news told you? or because you're an expert on missing children cases? which one is it?
