music for the actual act of stoning
Not music you listen to while you're stoned, I mean the music that you like to have going while you're actually in the process of getting high--either alone or with friends. Cause, y'know, when you're smoking your high is constantly going up, until about 5 mins after you finish your last toke. It's different that way. Also the music definitely sets the tone of the stone.
mine are:
GIMMIE SHELTER
the Stones
(great for summer day smoking)
CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC
Jimi
(ditto)
I FEEL FREE
Cream
(esp. good on a blunt ride where you don't exactly trust the driver)
WILLIE THE PIMP
Zappa
(funky weird shit)
SHE SAID SHE SAID
the Beatles
(or any Beatles, really)
THAT'S IT FOR THE OTHER ONE
the Dead
(esp. the version off Skull & Roses with that kickin drum)
ECHOES
Floyd
(classic)
DOUBLE IMAGE
Miles Davis
(screeEEECH wonk BARAANNGG awesome stuff)
TROUBLE NO MORE
Allmans
(the new Allman bros do really kick substantial ass)
ROUND MIDNIGHT
T. Monk
(played this high on coke for a school music fest)
WASN'T BORN TO FOLLOW
the Byrds
(makes me feel like I'm floating)
IF YOU WANT TO BE A BIRD
Holy Modal Rounders
(obviously)
Who else has any? Who else even picks songs based on this rather small window?

That??s a great list of tried-and-true stoned music.
Some trivia:
Ironically, Zappa (Willie the Pimp) was anti-drug, and the tune was sung by Don Van Vlet (sp) AKA Captain Beefheart - also anti-drug, I believe. I went to a Beefheart concert on acid once, and the underlying message of his brand new (early 70??s) album ??Clear Spot? was anti-acid. I didn??t know this, and was tripping on some powerful LSD.
The Holy Modal Rounders' Peter Stampfel was one of the movers and shakers of the 60's music scene (also played with the FUGS and many other aggregations), is credited with inventing "acid-folk" music, and is still somewhat musically active - although I believe he??s been working for a number of years in NY with science fiction publishing. I met him at a coffeehouse performance in the 1970??s. I offered him a (unlit) joint, but he declined ?? so I gave it to his backup musician, who gratefully accepted LOL.
The new CD reissue of Janis Joplin??s Pearl is great. There is a second disc with performances recorded at the Festival Express Tour in Canada, 1970?? during the LIVE performance of Move Over, Janis says, ??This is a song that requires audience participation. All you have to do is clap your hands, man ?? I know you can cope with it, no matter how stoned you are. I mean, we??re gonna cope with it and we??re all pretty stoned too!?

I've made countless smoking mixes specifically picking songs for what point in the session I would be at when the particular song comes up... so yes I do take into account that "small period of time."
I think Marley is really good while smoking. I don't really dig on it too much when I'm stoned for some reason, but on the way up its perfect. There's lots of other stuff thats good all the time, but I think marley is what sticks out in my head as good "smoking" music.

Most of my friends love Tool, so that's usually what I'm listening too when I'm smoking. I like softer stuff, but when I'm in the process of smoking I like something a little more intense for some reason.

Jane's Addiction is great to pack a bowl and then smoke to.
Once me and my sister were in her car listening to the radio getting stoned and it was playing eric Clapton. Neither one of us could think of his name and it was driving us crazy. It was awesome.

@ Breukelen
I knew Zappa didn't do drugs, but I didn't realize he was specifically anti-drugs, nor did I know the message of Clear Spot. Thats okay though, heightens the irony, and he's got plenty of other stuff that rules anyway (Who Needs the Peace Corps?)
So thanks for the trivia!

Holy crap, I was trying to remember the name of that song forever! I have some John Prine tracks on cassette (Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings or something like that), I listen to it when my friends aren't around to constantly give me shit for it. Him and James Taylor and Cat Stevens too.
