Do you think humans as a whole have a good heart?

Every night you can turn on the evening news and for a good 25 minutes are horrified by what people do. Rape, Beatings, Murder, Thieves and parents who kill their kids.

I know not everyone is like that, I am not. But I also look around and there are a handful of good people in the world but that part of people seems to be hidden under fear maybe. Fear of being that nice guy and giving a hand to someone in-need who then turns around to rob or kills you.

Have you ever passed up a chance to help someone because you were not sure if it would backfire and end up causing you trouble?

Do we have good hearts and are compassion is covered up by fear?

There's a lot of sickness out there. I think that a (small) percentage of people are intelligent enough to realize that simplistic principles like The Golden Rule are basically sound; abide by that and we all benefit. Then there's a majority who're too stupid, greedy, and/or lazy to play by the one simple ideal. Below that are the minority who really are interested in preying on others for their own sick reasons.

So, straight answer to a direct question; yes, I think people are basically good. It'd take a major catharsis to sort out the few who could actually build a better society, though. There are too many negative factors in the equation, I believe. It's too easy for the second 2 categories of people I mentioned to rationalize their behavior.

Actually the news plays the bad stuff more so they get more Viewers/ratings.

Well humans have three goals-to get food, shelter, and to reproduce. Everything else kind of revolves around that. So if compassion and caring for others helps us achieve those goals, then yes we will be compassionate. Take packs of wolves for example. They take care of eachother, even the omega male who is at the bottom of the hierarchy and is often the weakest.

At first, humans just basically cared for people in their tribes and familes. But as human society became more complex and a agricultural society replaced a nomadic/hunterer gatherer society, humans started thinking of "others', even strangers as important because cooperation in such ways as taxes and commerce was essential in the growth of a civilization which in turn protected their own familes. And of course, religion comes into the picture but I wont get into that.

I think MOST people are good. I think they get confused, and caught up in things, and fail to realize whats important. There are a couple really sick fucks out there, I think they have mental issues. I really don't think there are too many sane people that are downright evil, but maybe I'm neive. The issue is that all these good people get caught up in smaller evils that start to take over. Drugs, money, sex, power, etc. All these things can be good and evil. When we become obsessed or caught up in them, they turn use evil. I think the fear thing is definately part of the equation as well. We are weary of fundamentally good people who have gotten corrupted by something or another. As a for instance, I can't count the number of times I've passed hitch hikers on the road because I was scared of them. As of late I've tried to put my fears aside and just let the love flow haha. I'm scared as shit everytime I've picked up a hitch hiker, but everytime I drop them off I feel really good I helped. Don't know where I'm going with this, I guess just watch the evils, keep things in balance. Don't let fear consume you.

i hate how humans became. there are so much good ppl, but everyday we only see the bad ones. seeing that everyday can influence, form my opinion, our acts. i hate individualism

but i think we all have a good heart, because when a faimly member dies we get upset, because we were close to that person and shows that we have emotions. negative and positive emotions.

i think money and drugs are a big BIG problem in this world....
I think its the persons mentality that determines their actions....lots of people think they are better than other people which then in turn gives them the right to kill rape etc the people under that person.

I'm fucking sick of people blaming EVERYTHING on the fucking government. I'll admit the govenrment can do better, but how does people being good at heart have anything to do with the fucking government?!?!?! Why don't you take some fucking responsibility for YOUR actions and be and active member in YOUR community to improve the human condition. As much as you would like to think its us versus them we are all in this together. So quit using the govenrment as a scapegoat for your own short comings its time to man up and make the difference yourself or shut the fuck up.

I think people are essentially good. I mean, if you take the rudest, most selfish person you can find and take them for a joint (or whatever), just the two of you, then you'll find that without all the pressure to 'perform' and act up in front of anyone this person will be just as kind and understanding as the rest of us. But that only applies to one type of person - the type of person who's negative behaviour (for want of a better term) is a way of boosting their own ego, showing off, etc. When talking about people as a whole, then I still think that people are essentially good - it is the system and the way we have been running things that generally corrupts and distorts peoples sense of what is right and wrong, what is normal and what is abnormal. Take a person out of this environment and I think everyone just wants to eat, sleep and fuck. :)

You are right, we are in this together.

The government needs to beware of this fact. It seems that I have to fight unjust laws all the time because the Government is getting paid or does not want to look bad or like they were wrong so instead of doing the right thing FOR THE PEOPLE the government defends its unjust ways to look like they are right. Sure the government has many good things about it but it has many bad things as well. To get these things changed so that laws and the way of life is better, we the people must bitch and complain until are voice is heard and the government has no where to go except to grant the wishes OF THE PEOPLE.

America would be so much better if the government sucked up its pride and admit when it is wrong and change the laws so that, "example" a person who needs medical Marijuana can use it without going to jail. So many other things the government is wrong about but being a Marijuana forum I thought that example was best used here.

The government is great, do not get me wrong but needs much improvement. If they spent the Billions and Billions here at home instead of in Iraq, Africa and so on, I think America would be better of having that money spent here in America.

It makes me so happy to see a mother of 2 on welfare, I am so happy when I see a homeless person on the street, I am so glad we lock up people who still stuff because he or she was trying to make some money to eat or pay the bills. So much work needs to done at home before we save the world. If you broke your arm and leg, would you fix it or would you spend the money to help an Iraqi get a job? The government tryâ??s to do well around the world but it should be fixing its own issues at home.

Sort of like when we give a friend advice, break up with her, she is no good for you. Those words are so easy and it is a clear choice but when it is you, sometimes we are blind and do not listen to our friends and stay in a fucked up relationship. The government is BLIND.

The government tells us it is wrong to get in debt we cannot pay back and has made it harder to file for bankruptcy but the government is trillions in debt that I wonder if it can ever pay it in full? The government can tell us how to live and act but those words do not apply to the government.

It's just a BS government and I bitch because I am part of the group who wants a better America and fight to have unjust laws and ways changed for the good of the people and not for the good of the government. Our founding fathers did not have the vision of America we live in today and it seems to become more like a dictatorship ran by a group known as, the government.

Project, I agree with everything you said. What I state orginally still stands, stop blaming the government for EVERYTHING. Like I said the government can do a better job with a lot of things (marijuana laws included) but the human condition is something that needs to be addressed in OUR day to day happenings. Spread the love so to speak. No matter what rules you put in place your not going to change peoples hearts without first showing a more compassionate way of life, and then bringing others to your compassionate way of life. Say all the negative shit you want on a this or any message board. I know I'm going to. At the same time, make sure what you are saying makes sense, your anger is well founded. Just some thoughts as always feel free to disagree.

Well is it not hard to follow the rules of society if you cannot get a good job because you got busted for smoking Marijuana and no good company will hire you or you cannot get government help because you got busted for Marijuana?

Sure, that was the persons fault for breaking the law. Shame on him or her for smoking Marijuana, life should be hell for them and his/her family should suffer. People have the instincts to survive; if they have no way out they will steal, lie, cheat and kill in some cases to survive. On this point, the government is the fuck up here. They would rather kill you and your family than help you with a drug problem or take Marijuana for medical reasons, if Marijuana is really a problem? Put all Marijuana users in PRISON instead of getting the people treatment.


But so many people are raised in poverty in America and funds are cut back every day to support the world. We tell our kids they can be whatever they want to be but it is very hard for such a young mind to do so when raised in poverty or parents who do not act like parents. If everyone grew up the same and had a fair shot, yeah it is on that person to be all he/she can be. People adapt, they become what society and the way of life has thought them.
