Hundreds Attend Mo. Confederate Ceremony
June 05, 2005 9:36 PM EDT
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - About 400 people turned out for a Confederate memorial service held Sunday under the rebel battle flag, singing "Dixie" and laying roses at a Confederate monument. Miles to the east, meanwhile, protesters demonstrated their disapproval by marching outside the Missouri Governor's Mansion.
Officials with the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site in Higginsville said the turnout there - four times larger than expected - could be attributed to the return of the Confederate flag. Republican Gov. Matt Blunt ordered a one-day flying of the flag at the historic site to coincide with the memorial service, saying he was acting on the request of a state lawmaker who represents the Higginsville area.
The attention "over that issue caused more people to be aware of the event," site administrator Greta Marshall said after the ceremony.
Those attending the memorial service saluted various Confederate flags and lay roses at a monument to fallen Confederate soldiers. As the service was going on in Higginsville, about 20 demonstrators carrying small American flags marched up and down the sidewalks outside the mansion in Jefferson City, about 90 miles to the east.
Sunday marked the first time the Confederate flag had flown over state property since January 2003, when Democratic Gov. Bob Holden's administration ordered it to come down from the Higginsville site and the Fort Davidson State Historic Site in Pilot Knob.
Leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said they had no problem with the memorial service, just with Blunt's decision to fly the Confederate flag.
"We recognize citizens have a right to honor their ancestors and heroes," said Harold Crumpton, president of the St. Louis branch of the NAACP. "But they don't have the right to use state funds and property to pass on the venom of their symbols of hatred."
About 800 people are buried at the 192-acre Confederate historic site in Higginsville, which formerly served as a state-run Confederate Veterans Home. The annual memorial service is scheduled near the June 3 birthday of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Missouri never joined the Confederacy but was a divided state during the Civil War, with some residents fighting for the Union and others for the Confederacy.

Howdy Y'all,
This is what gits my dander up:
"Leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said they had no problem with the memorial service, just with Blunt's decision to fly the Confederate flag."
"We recognize citizens have a right to honor their ancestors and heroes," said Harold Crumpton, president of the St. Louis branch of the NAACP. "But they don't have the right to use state funds and property to pass on the venom of their symbols of hatred."
Well...how gracious of the NAACP,to allow us to honor our fallen Confederate soldiers..they seem to forget, that many a black man, volunteered to serve in the Confederate army,in the fight for State's rights and self-determination. Many 'slaves' were freed by Southerners,so that they could join the fight against the North.
The NAACP,has declared on it's own, that the Confederate flag is a symbol of hatred..I think that there's more hatred and racism coming from the NAACP,than from the families of Confederate soldiers.
Just to give y'all a clue, about how we feel about the Confederate flag in my part of the woods, there's a feller that lives next door to our county jail, which is downtown,in the county seat and across from the courthouse, that flys a Confederate flag,24/7,365. Ain't no sap-sucking liberals or hate-filled NAACP'er's,coming around to demand that he stop flying it..nor have the cops and sherrifs or judges. There's plenty of Confederate flags being flown in this county, right out in the front yards of folks, proudly displayed, right next to the American flag and Texas flag.
The NAACP,can kiss my hairy,pimpled,ass !

Most non-Southerners see the confederate flag as a symbol of racism, no different than a swastika, and associate it with slavery and groups such as the KKK. Flying the confederate flag to honor fallen confederate soldiers insn't much different from flying a
WWII German flag with a swastika to honor fallen German soldiers. From what I saw when I lived in the South most, but not all, of the people who would display a confererate flag were pretty much racist rednecks. So, while I agree with some of your comments about the NAACP, I can not fault them for having a problem with the flag being flown over state property.
Symbols can be very powerful things and carry a lot of psychological weight. I am an athiest but would never desecrate a crucifix. I would not do this out of respect for what that symbol means to millions of people. I feel the same about flying a confederate, or nazi, flag. Whether or not the person displaying the flag is racist it is a racist symbol to millions so displaying is it in poor taste.

Can not Agree with u any more bro, Iv got that shirt and one that says "American by Birth , Rebel By Heritage"with American Eagle In shrouded by the Confederate Flag. I go to a school with many( i mean ASHITLOAD) of Blacks I wore that shirt all day( i am friends with many of the blacks, and not just blacks im very against Racism) NO one said a thing about my shirt....You kno who did say it was Racist? A WHITE Vice Principle...
I told him No one has said anything about it being Racist Because they KNO i dont wear it to be Racist. I Fly my Flag with Honor just like i fly my American flag. And i'll be Damned if Some Politicaly COrrect Jack ass Is gona tell me not to wear a T-shirt. I see many People Wearing Shirts that Have Malcom-X on it, Malcom x was a terrorist. People OVER React about this stuff.
WHen Anyone says My Flag is Racist i tell them they need History Lesson.

I personally dont think the Confederate flag is a sign of racism...and i dont think that i would lable malcom x a "terrorist" either. Alot of people dont like the confederate flag because they connect it with slavery. Hence slavery being related to racism. The civil war wasnt only about slavery tho, there were other factors involved there as well.
The society we live in today likes to call anything that can be disagreed with politically incorrect, and people love to find things to bitch/protest over. Like that other guy said, there is nothing wrong to be proud of your heritage, be it confederate, yankee, brit, or all of the above.

I see where you're coming from. I'm black so lemme get my two cents in. When you fly your Confederate flag alot of people are going to be offended. Blacks were slaves for over 400 years and that sucks. Whenever a person sees the Confe. flag but isnt rooted with tradition they see it as a bunch of rednecks drinking beer and talking about them "naggers" or "them there coloreds". I think yeh, not all people who fly the flag are rednecks but then not all people who wear Black Panther t-shirts are violent. It's about the movement behind it. You may think that you are honoring your forefathers but like it or not, they fought for the right to own slaves and to not live in cohesion with the North. There was alot of propaganda involved so alot of southerners weren't necessarily fighting for that purpose BUT that's what the history books say. In our current environment i just dont think we're ready for that re-integration of the flag yet. Wave em as much as you want though it's your right as an american citizen.
Also: Alot of blacks fought for the south because the south told them that any man who bears arms against them would be killed. Living in the brutal south at that time with no interaction with northerners PLUS propaganda showcasing the north as weak and the south as the best...do you REALLY think blacks would take a chance fighting for an army they know nothing about? And I dont think they had the leisure of reading carefully Union legislation.

I agree with fengzi and Nichol, that flag is used by white racist...typically it is on the back of a hay-seeds pickup...it is a free country let them wave their flag...I just know when I have seen that flag the people carrying it are usaully pretty slow mentally and I steer clear of them....I don't mind that they carry it...I see it as a big I am an Idiot sign. lol

yeah youre right about that...the flag has been linked to douchebags like that alot...but like that one guy said...its exactly those kinds of people who need a histlry lesson.

The way I see it, then these same guys shouldnt have a problem with a middle eastern man walking around with a "I Love Osama" t-shirt. Sure, he may be a terrorist but the government would hate people to know that there are many muslims living in the states that support bin laden secretly. They're american citizens and dont they have the same free speech applied to them? The thing is, like marijuana there's use and abuse. I fully support people's rights but just because you can do it doesnt mean that it should be some big thing when people have a big problem with it.

You're out of your mind, Torog. "Hatred and racism" coming from the NAACP? You can kiss my ass.
Lemme pose this to you: Hypothetically, you're black. You and your ancestors have been visciously oppressed for over 400 years by white people. For whatever reason, there are still people flying the flag of a "country" that fought for, among other things, the continued right to own black people. How does that make you feel? Do you like whitey when you see that so many still yearn for a society that makes you property rather than a human being? Be honest with yourself. How would you feel about it?
I know the NAACP isn't racist, that's just stupid. But if they were, shit, I'd understand. If any one group of people has the right to hate another out of hand, it would be black people for white people.
I lived in S.C. when the NAACP decided to boycott the state because of its flying of the Confederate flag over the statehouse. And the argument of "it's heritage, not hate" was spouted off too many times to be counted. What was conveniently left out is the fact that S.C. didn't start flying the Confederate flag until the 1960s when integration began. I'd be willing to bet that that's the case for every Confederate flag being flown today.
Talk about "states' rights" all you want. But no matter how you slice it, that term has always been and will always be an excuse for narrow-minded dipshits to try and justify discrimination.
On another note, I don't get this fascination the South has with the Confederacy, for any reason. When are Southerners going to let the Civil War go? It was 140 years ago. The Confederacy failed. I'm a Southerner, born and raised, and I got over it a long-ass time ago. In fact, I don't think it was ever an issue with me.
-

great post bhallg. i didnt even know about the flag flying after integration. Personally, I think we all take our freedoms for granted. Just because the Constitution states that we can run around and say and worship and demonstrate as we please doesnt give us the right to shove it down the throats of others. That in turn breeds a bigger rally to supress it based on the rights of you being able to protest what you want as well. I don't care if redneck 34 IQ assholes fly their flags all over the place and hold demonstrations talking about "them there nappy headed big nose breathin' black sonsabitches." i've heard enough of that shit to last a lifetime. But when you use state property or tax payer's money to sponsor that ignorance then you've got me all over your ass like Bush in a cocaine field.

Just keep focuseing on such a insignificant moment in time Torg.
Thats just what they want you to do, keep your fronts on something as idiotic as who can wave a flag and who cant.
Think its bad now?... you aint seen nothin yet. Watch the history channel, watch shows about how Hitler took over Germany.
Its really very scary to see the blinding similairities between what is going on now and what happen in germany.
Hitler made a big mistake after invadeing Poland, instead of takeing over Poland and getting the support of the citizens before he moved on, he simply moved on to Russia.
Had he done what the US is doing now, and thats move into an area, set up programs to help the people, and install a form of goverment that is a mirror of there own. (all done under the umbrella of good intentions) And then occupy the region long enough to teach the children of this new way. After time the people know nothing of what it used to be, because all teaching of that will be considered terrorist acts.
Set up new schools for the children and then educate the teachers in "our" vision.
Then after you have the support of the masses in your newly acuired country, you can then refill the ranks and move to the next country on the list.
History is well documented and when you have documentation from both sides of a conflict the truth can be worked out. But if its one system that is allowed to take over. no truth can be found because the only side of the story we will ever know is that of the victor. And as history is proveing now, the Victor will not be held accountable for lies.
One huge flaw I see in this is the American people are wakeing up. To control them for the duration it will need to be done with force. And with the military falling short of its recruiting goals by 48% last time around. I dont think our Military and police can handle 2 fronts. One at home and one abroad is just to many and we would be forced to withdraw from Iraq should we fall into civil war.
But ya never know, maybe thats the plan. While you raise the next breed in Iraq, keeping your show of force there in the form of 14 bases. Turn your attention to your own people and once they are comformed. your new crop has grown in Iraq and then they can move on to the next country on the list.
Nothing to do with flag waveing, but thats my point.
Peace.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State."
--Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels
Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago, an eye witness account by a prisoner of Russia's gulags:
"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at handâ?¦The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!"

Are you out of your mind too?
First off, don't assume you know anything about me with that "you people" shit. I'm not black. It doesn't take a black man to realize that black people have been shat on for years. Only a small amount of intelligence is required. Also, when I hear anyone say "you people" when referring to another ethnic group, it almost immediately makes me think you're not coming from a place of any kind of cultural harmony.
Second, why is it a generalization to say that those who fly the Confederate flag are racist? We fly the flags of those who we agree with. And was not one of the major tenents of the Confederacy the right for white people to own black people, that Negroes were nothing more than property? Yes, they were about more than slavery and yes the Civil War was about more than slavery. But sometimes, a bad apple ruins the bunch. You won't find me flying a Nazi flag because Germany had free health care in the '30s.
I think the NAACP will "let it go" when black people play on a level playing field. Maybe they'll let it go when American prisons aren't predominantly filled with minorities, when pay for blacks reaches that of whites, when urban education is given the same funding as suburban education. They'll let it go when drug laws, hell all laws, don't have a racist tilt to them. Maybe they'll let it go when the life expectancy of a black man reaches that of a white man, or at least when black men can collect their Social Security at a younger age. Perhaps they'll let it go when black people aren't harrassed in voting lines, or mislead about where to vote.
The NAACP is doing its job because no one else will. You're ignorant if you think racism is dead.
And don't tell me "we've tried to make up for it." You ain't done shit. Have you given a black man your pay as reparation for your ancestors' wretched abuse of his ancestors? I don't think so.
And also don't tell me that blacks enslaved each other long before the white man came along. While it's true that African Muslims (Arabs) enslaved other Africans (blacks) long before the white man, black Africans never enslaved each other. I don't understand why this myth has legs, but blame it on a collective guilty conscience.
You're just wrong. And that's not even the saddest part. This is:
"You're pretty damn free now"
So you're saying close to free is good enough?

Wow, for once I cant agree with you there pisshead. I dont know what your race is and it inst even important. I think reparations should continue for as long as they're needed. We live in an era of affirmative action where black people are given jobs that they may or may not deserve. People in affirmative action dont get paid more or anything they just get the job because it was a big problem that blacks werent even getting jobs in the first place. We still live in a society where people complain that blacks are given that in the first place. Have you ever been through a black ghetto? It's easy to say things about freedom when you've never had it really threatened. People shoot each other and all the media does is blame rap music and videogames. Noone ever says "well i wonder why they live like that with all these liberties and freedoms" because that would mean understanding that all those rappers rap about the life they live. Ashlee Simpson and sum41 and shania twain and all those "white music" (im not ignorant i dont know how to word it) artists sing and dance about being in love and how their life sucks because they can't get a date or they broke up with their lover. They sing about those things because that's the life they know and at the end of the day, music or not they're in a much better position just because of their skin color. Rappers rap about drug dealing and shooting glocks on the corner because that's the life they know and thats the life almost the entire community knows. Put 50 cent in a business suit and a Yale education and he's still got a whole lot to overcome to be successful. That goes for all blacks that arent privileged enough to be born above the poverty line. The government makes reparations to indians. They have casinos that bring in millions of dollars. The NA's in charge then disperse that throughout the people. If native american indians still live in poverty then that's because of the greed of their peers, not because blacks want more than they deserve. The fact is, blacks are still oppressed and its done subtly with big corporate commercials that show more ethnicities just to reap money from that section of the public. We watch television and then we pat ourselves on the back proclaiming about what wonderful advancements in cultural diversity the country is making. Then we all go to sleep not knowing that people are out selling coke and heroin because they've been born into a society that does it to make ends meet. You go to them and you tell them that the country has done all it can to make things better. You go and tell them that it's okay to use state property and funds that could be diverted to black health care and better schooling to demonstrate flying a flag that was used to showcase people's beliefs that blacks are sub-human and should only be used as agricultural fodder. You tell them that even though the Mexican President made racist comments about how his people are forced to do jobs not even blacks want and the government didnt even do so much as reprimand him even though blacks were insulted on an international level. If anything i've said is untrue then you should have no altercations at all. You tell them that we dont live in a society where blacks are ruthlessly given less than due process of the law on a frequent basis. Remember Rodney King? That was just one of many incidents we dont hear about. You go and tell them. If you can do that without sparking another three-day race riot, post back here and we'll toke as we message the board.
I dont think you're racist or anything like that. I think that you (like many others) have been led to believe that everything is fine and that blacks have every opportunity available. Truth is, we don't. Whites have their corporations and indians have their casinos. SOME black people have drugs that the united states refuses to legalise thus justifying frequent and constant arrests of people who have nothing in the first place. Everything's all nice and real balanced right?

not true...but where should the reparations stop then? are you for paying reparations to every group in history that's been treated badly? it would bankrupt the planet.
just tell me where it should stop? anything up to 200 years ago? blacks weren't the only slaves, and people all around the world have suffered, and continue to do so, including white people...who gets paid and who doesn't? it would bankrupt the planet.
should the government garnish my paycheck and give it to a poor black person? or a poor black person who had slaves for ancestors? or a native american who had an ancestor a few hundred years ago who was given a smallpox blanket?
i make just enough to pay all my bills and rent, and have a little left over for ganja and to save...
all i want to know is where does it stop? it's not my fault the feds ship in the drugs and use it to enslave people...ending the drug war would be a great start in stopping what's going on.

Comparing Indians to blacks, as far as how they have been treated historically, is like comparing rotten apples to rotten oranges. They're both equally terrible, but different nonetheless.
You can't put a price on the suffering both have had to endure at the hands of white people. But you can attach a figure to the wages lost by blacks during slavery.
Reparations will never be paid though, so it's a moot point. The figures I've read (upwards of $700 trillion) and other ethical and legal questions make that impossible. I was saying that to make the point that it's a fallucy to think "we've tried to make it better."
Idealistically, I'm all for the payment of reparations and the recognition of all treaties signed between the U.S. and Indians even though I know it will never happen.

Naw man, I'm just saying that reparations should be paid for as long as it takes. When I say reparations Im not just talking about some paycheck that's owed. Im talking about EQUAL health care, education. I'm looking for a cleanup of the inner-city black neighbourhoods. i'm looking for jobs that arent REQUIRED to be given to me because if affirmative action wasnt in places i could face unfair discrimination. In fact I'd still probably face unfair employment because companies only have to fill a certain quota. Once that quota gets made then they can go back to hiring all the whites they want. It's really fucked up. Nancy Grace bitches about all the suburban middle-class white girls that get abused which is terrible but I havnt seen her shed a tear for any of the black girls who prostitute themselves to make money or the girls who get raped all the time.
Look, what Im saying is that not all reparations are monetary. Even if blacks didnt get a dime personally, an official apology and the stance that things would be made right is enough.

I'm sorry, but I can't respect a flag that people carried into battle for a cause that, if fully realized, would have resulted in a separate slave nation. It's true that there's more to the Civil War than just slavery, but I could never feel pride waving a flag representing a society condoning such a barbaric practice.
Also...could anybody clear up for me why many people display the Confederate Flag next to the American Flag? I mean...The Confederate Flag represents a group of people who wanted OUT of the Union. Sure, many modern Confederate Flag wavers feel pride for the South AND the U.S. but one flag represents a complete opposition to the other.

The government under the US flag recognized slavery as well.

I dont know why we live so comfortably that we believe that any and all exercises of freedom of speech are fundamentally good and non-abusive. I fully support any form, but I do believe that we have a penchant for allowing and condoning wantonly anti-free sentiment. Today, it's a proud few americans tipping their cowboy hat to their fallen heros of the south who pushed for ignorance and hate. Well what about tomorrow when we have a few proud southern historians proudly commemorating their ancestors who explored the brave new world of africa and even brought back souvenirs! The point Im trying to get across is that people should do what they want and should be denied access to government property and funds to do that.

im not bashing southern pride but if we dont feel comfortable living with muslims who proudly support bin laden and wearing osama t-shirts how do we get the right to allow the southern men and women to support the idealism of tyranny?

^People should remember that having the right to do something and having the good sense not to do it are two different things and don't neccessarily contradict each other.
