welcome jembre,
It is up to you. You may continue to use cfl and finish your grow. Usually warm white lamps are used for flowering and cool white for vegging. Some folks mix it up a little and use warm and cool white lamps together to get a full spectrum of light for the plants in either stage of growth. HID lighting for growing usually are 400 watt to 1000 watt Metal Halide for vegging adn Low Pressure Sodium for Blooming. Again, some folks like to go with just one or the other or mix a little of each. Good Growing!
I want my plant grow fast and big budd. This a reason why im looking HID lamp.Quote:

4 cfl bulbs aren enough to do much with. That plant in the second pic is already too branched and tall for 2 cfl's. Either get a lot more cfl's and you will get a little bit of bud or you can find decent 400 watt hps/mh kits for pretty cheap now days. Use the 400 watt mh for veg, you can dim it down if you want, and use the hps for flower. Keep the air moving and you will do fine. I dont know much about the low pressure sodium bulbs that the previous poster mentioned. Did you use perlite in your soil? Your plants look way too wet, let them dry out more between waterings.
if i use a 250 watt MH, is it good?Quote:

ehmm..
there small plants that do not age as large plants.
and different strains, it's royal dwarf from royal queen.
250 mh is fine for veg, hps during flower will produce better. The price difference from 250 watt to 400 watt isnt much, so I would get a 400. I know they arent huge plants but 40 watts of cfl isnt going to do much
my goof, I meant high pressure sodium. LPS was the orange parking lot lighting (sox180)Quote:

just add more cfl's, you wont have the heat issue's especially in that space. If your worried about getting good buds, then fear no more.
im using 8-14 depending. works like a charm. Here is what ive been able to achieve using cfl 24w 1,750 lumen bulbs.
i agree, high time magazine say using MH+HPS is better.Quote:

are you sure, use CFLs until flowering? how many you plant?Quote:

Plenty of people use cfl's for grows, you just need to buy a lot of them and constantly adjust them. People say they get dense nugs with cfl's, they look nice, but hid's penetrate much deeper and make much denser buds. Nothing against cfl's, I would just rather have 1 light to adjust and 1 cord to run, i dont like clutter in my tent. I dont know where your located but if you want to run hid, search for a 400 watt dimmable digital growlight, it will run bot mh/hps bulbs and you can run it at 200, 300, & 400 watts. I run 600 lumateks with Digilux bulbs and love them. Keep the air moving and watch your temps and youll be good.
well 25,000 lumen of anything is going to penetrate just fine. hell a 250w hps spits out about 30 ish lumen. but you have to deal with the heat! main reason why CFL's are good. and if you know what your doing you definitely can get killer results.
my photo's speak for them self. cfl's 100% veg to flower
I wouldn't put an HPS in anything smaller than 9 sq ft which is a 3x3. a 400w hps is typically designed to run in a 4x4.
FYI, if you setup your cfl's properly, why would you need to adjust them all the time, I don't.
also power draw. If I was running HPS,.. I would use 220v. which is actually interesting. how many growers are using 220v
CFL//
1. simple
2. less heat
3. bulbs are way cheaper
4. you can customize your light setup
5. no need for tons of cool tubes, ducting and inline fans that keep you awake at night, (more clutter)
I never said anything bad about cfl's, i said plenty of people grow with them. Why would I need to run 220 to run a hps? Its an option but certainly not a necessity. When someone tells me I want to grow large plants, cfl isnt the first thing that comes to my mind. If someone ever shows me a pound of straight cfl grown bud out of 23 watt cfl bulbs out of a 4x4 tent il be praising them as much if not more than the next guy. A 400 watt isnt designed for a 4x4 tent, unless your doing a vert grow or a sog grow i wouldnt recommend a 400 for anything bigger than 30x30 for good buds. I run a 600 in my 4x4 and it works good but I could use a little more. Cfl bulbs are cheaper, but not when u use 20 of them for a grow + 10 splitters+ 10 sockets. Heat really isnt an issue with a vented hood and inline fans arent loud if you suspend them with a bungee cord and use insulated duct. Cfl has its place but not for growing big plants.
yea tru definitely not good for tall plants.
hey guys, long time no see ya .
i was change my light, i use MH 400 watt .
hoho.. that's good for big plant, but not good for a little plant..
temperature rises, to 37 degrees Celsius.
I've added a fan, but it did not go well.
This raises new issues.
hence, why I said you should stick with CFL's.
Just from looking at your pics, I can tell already that your space is too small for a 400w bulb, unless you get the proper cooling setup, intake & out take fans blowing into a different room. You will have issues.
Try to get a lower bulb, maybe a 150w, 75w or use cfl's then switch to the HID when you flower
cfl's only require, typical k-mart fans, computer fans are nifty if your into DIY
ya it's true dude.Quote:

You need to slow down, most problems can be worked out if you slow down ant think. If you got the 400 watt dimmable that I suggested then just turn it down to 50% an the heat should be more than manageable until you improve your design. If you have a winged reflector a great way to keep them cool is get yourself a small pc fan like grow demon suggested but what I did was mount it at the end of the fixture with paper clips blowing directly back at the bulb, direct your oscilating fan on the ground blowing the same direction and up, it makes a little vortex of air movement going up and away an helps greatly. I ran a 600 watt in a 30x30 closet with a winged reflector this way with a passive intake and a 6" inline fan for exhaust. Get your airflow corrected and you will be fine
any light u add will help id use at the least 4 32-55 watt cfl 6500 color for veg (8400-12500 lumens)u want more for bloom maybe 4-8 68 watt 2700 color. a plant with a prof bulb gets 55,000 lumens for a 400 watt and a 1000 watt gives 110,000 lumens so the less u use the lower the yield. a good chart is .5 grams per real watt used not equivalent, a 23 watt cfl gives 23 watts not 100
a cardboard box.??? please don't put a 400w HID in a cardboard box setup. hehe. I hope im wrong. and its not a cardboard box. but the pics, I see card board walls
I mean if you look at your plants. they look just fine under the 4 cfl's you had.. they are just a little nute burned on the tips.
they sure got pretty big for just 4 bulbs. let that speak for its self
yes, but it does not fit with my grow room setup.Quote:

did you know about sativa strain?
i mean, 100% pure sativa.
i've got much seeds pure sativa. do you want it?

this a cardboard box growroom. :D
yea as I suspected!! very nice, prob the best paper box setup ive ever seen.
ok if this is the case here is what I would do. your using almost the same amount of space I am.
the trick to cfl growing is getting a nice good even spread of a light array over your plants.
so to remedy this, I did about 8 months of research before I dove into a cfl setup. and what I came up with has worked.
1. cfl lights emit more light on the sides
2. the more lights the better
3. a couple fans in various spots to create a wind tunnel of air flow ( as jbone77 mentioned )
4. I find that 24w bulbs work fine (and keep the heat very low) 1600-1750 lumen each
5. for flowering I use 8-14bulbs depending on how many plants (which the results are in my user profile photo album you can look)
6. total watts for my 8 bulbs is 192w which is around 15,000 lumen
7. with 14 bulbs its around 25,000 lumen
now you could use stronger bulbs & fewer of them, but they will get hotter much much hotter, 2 125-150w cfl grow bulbs puts out as much heat as 20 24w bulbs. now the 24w bulbs are spaced out far enuph apart so it allows the air flow tunnel to dissipate the heat much faster.
here is what you should look into getting for a decent cfl setup with a proper light spread
goto your local hardware store, get
1. 4-8 socket vanity mirror fixture $9-15.00 (im using- Hampton Bay Brushed Nickel 4-Light Bath Bar from home depot)
2. power cable to wire it $5.00
3. four Y bulb splitters ( the splitter are very important because it will angle the cfl bulb so more usable light is seen and consumed by the plant)
4. 4-8 bulbs you can expand as your plants grow
5. 1 fan blowing on the bulbs or near them to dissipate the little heat they do emit
5b. 1 fan to blow slow wind on your plants to strengthen the stalk so it can hold BIG BUDS!
6. roll of thin metal to make a reflector if you need
7. chain to hoist it
8. something to hold everything, Im using a pvc pipe hanging rig that I made
also if you want taller plants you need to move your lights farther away from the plant, I just harvest three 4.5 ft plants grown under cfl's. So tall plants can be done its just the lower portions don't get enuph light. so what. I added more light on the lower sides, and anything that grows scraggly I use them as a seed farm to create my own seeds/strain, works like a charm.
here some pics of the various stages of my light setup
so better use cfl's 24 watt?
I just planted 2 pieces only, how much should I add?
well its not necessarily better. but for your conditions/ YES its better.
your originally had, 4 20w. not sure the output on those, I have never seen a 20w bulb. it prob is a 23/24w
a 24w bulb is 1750 lumen
a 23w is 1600 lumen
4x1750 = 7,000 lumen. plenty to grow green.
when you flower, add 4 more, and spread them out, in a row on top pointing Sideways
start by:
add 2 more. and see how the heat is. if its good.
then add 2 more,.. get it!>?
8 bulbs should be perfect for that space, get some Fans too!
here try this
Example of Estimating Number of CFLs Needed For Your Grow Space:
1.
Multiple width x length of your grow space to determine the sq feet.
Let’s say your grow space is 2’ x 2’ = 4 sq feet
2.
Multiple the sq feet of your space by 4,000 lumens to determine the total lumens needed for this space.
So 4 sq feet x 4,000 lumens/sq feet = 16,000 total lumens for that space
3.
Divide this number by the lumens produced by each bulb
If you’re getting 42W CFLs which are rated at 2,650 lumens apiece, that would be 16,000/2,650 = ~6
4.
This number is the minimum number of CFLs needed for your space
That means in this case you’d start with 6 (or more) 42W CFLs
hey growdemon 4x1750 = 1750 4 difrent places on the cannabis you will never get 7.000 lumen on 1 place with what you are talking about im sorry to say but you wont if you place 4 lights you will just get 1750 4 difrent places on the top of the cannabis
OK, sorry I did not tell the specs before.
it is:
1.5M high
1/2m X 1M wide
total plant 2pcs
strain : pineapple chunk and royal dwarf
light : 4pcs 20 watt's 2700K + 1pcs 22 watt 6500K
related temp : 29C degree ~ 32C degree
related humidity : 50% ~ 70%
air intek : 2pcs 12cm fan
air exhaust : 2pcs 12cm fan
additional fan : 1pcs 30cm
co2 maker
grow tent made from mulse plastic with pvc pipe, and a cardbox for hiding light out. 10M white vinyl sticker for refletive wall.
soil mix with perlite, goat manure, husk fuel.
fertilizer :
Npk 29+10+10+3 (veg stage)
nPk 15+30+15 (flowering stage)
and i think, i need 32000 lumen
I am in 9 square feet, same as you.
ive been doing tests,
1st grow 8,000 lumen 1 plant 4 bulbs 150w/75w/24w
2nd grow 15,000 lumen 6 plants 8 bulbs all 24w
3rd grow 25,000 lumen 15 plants 14 bulbs all 24w
satisfied each time! that's a fact
thanks dude, you have guided me for this.
Today I have bought 3pcs 35 watt 6500K CFL's. but I have not tried it, because I'm working.
anyone of you want to plan a vacation to asia?
contact me if you want.
