Undeniably male, man. Sorry.
Thanks guys....30 mins till lights on and hes gettn chopped
Was heartbreaking hope I dont have to do that again heh
they sell feminized seeds
I know with it being first time doing hydro I was just testing it out.
I bought "feminized" Afghan seeds for my first grow (still ongoing), for about twice the price, and with no stress issues at all, and healthy growth, 2 of the 8 plants that matured from seeds were males. So far, 2 more are clearly females, and 4 are still on the ID block, as this is week 1 of 12/12. This was from AMS, and though they clearly state that there's "no guarantee" with seed sex, I don't think I'll be going back there for the next seed batch.Quote:

This is why its good to keep a mom around. I keep my moms in soil for 4-6 months, then they get chopped in half (size them down) and I continue to pull clones off of her until I have a huge 2x main cola tree, then I'll flower them out and put 2nd gen in the mom chamber.
I'll do this for 3 generations until I crack a new seed. But in all honesty, I still have seeds from a year ago sitting in storage, I just keep adding to my strains, I'll pop 1-2 of the strain, keep the healthy one for the mom, and flower the runt, and continue on the cloning process.
For me, this is the way to go. I always buy feminized seeds (when I can) but even with that, I've only tossed 2 males in a year (both were from regular packs, one I did harvest some pollen from for future use) I also own some tieramist to force a plant to hermie if I'm low on the strain and really want my own feminized seeds from it. However, for the most part, I order new strains to test them out.
Example - I just switched to an RDWC system, and I have 3 strains in a 4 bucket system, Pineapple Express (my main), Big Bud (x2) and C99. Pineapple Express and Big Bud have just about the same nutrient tolerances (can force feed HEAVILY) but the C99 didn't take well to it. Now C99 is a great smoke, so I've either got to isolate her in a DWC system, put her in soil, or hold back on the nutes for all the plants - At this point, I've got about 10 healthy clones of C99, so the question is, do I deal with the lesser nutes on all my plants, or kill the strain.
Back to the original topic, I've only cracked 2 out of 10 C99 seeds, otherwise it would have been a HUGE waste of cash and resources. Because in order for me to grow it properly I either need a new setup, or have to adjust to the plant, which I don't know if I want to do yet. However, if I do kill it off and make room for another pineapple or big bud, I'll still have the mom in soil, so I don't lose the strain.
Good points about cloning: The clone will ALWAYS look like the mom (unless you do a crappy cut on the clone), the clone will ALWAYS be the sex of the mom, and, you never have to buy another seed if your happy with your strain :D (unless some act of god/loss of power cause you to pop another seed) but you can have 1000000000 F1 clones and not lose any potency. (As long as you don't flower the mom)
awesome post man enjoyed reading it
but it leads me to ask a few questions
1. how long does seeds last i know how to store them but how long can they last before they dont pop
2.you said you keep yours for 3 generations is the third really the best or is that a myth or do they just lose there potency after the third
3. what is a RDWC system?
1. I keep my seeds in one of those flat fishing tackle boxes, it's kept in a dark area with silica packs to ensure there is no moisture - I've popped 4 year old seeds. I've heard of seeds being kept for 9+ years with a 80% success rate.
2. I've heard of 9 generations before. However, if your smoking the same strain, you won't reallly notice a drop in potency as you'll get used to it generation after generation. I only do 3 generations because honestly, 3 generations can go on for 4 years+. I keep my moms for about 3 months before they're chopped in 1/2, then they're good for another 3 months or so before they turn into a tree - At which point, theoretically I COULD chop them again in 1/2 sticking with the F1 strain.
3. Recirculating DWC, its a pure hydro system that allows me to flush/fill rather easily. Mine consists of (5) 5 gallon buckets (about to be 7) that houses 4 plants, and then 1 bucket is my control bucket (houses the pump and allows me to check/adjust the PH of all the buckets with ease)
1.that is a crazy long time but gives me an idea i might just start a collection LOL and do like pokemon the show and "try to grow them all"
2.i seen the joerge carvants videos and there was that guy that had the same for 9 years its outdoors so is that what your saying!!! you must love that strain to grow it for 4 years
3.sounds like a great setup that dosnt need much work exept in between grows but hydro is still a couple of years to advanced for me but good to know a little hydro
great post filled with info:)!!!
So I chopped the male but haven't checked on plants in nearly 2 days I will tonight have had alot of stressful stuff going on. My question is do I HAVE to cut the roots and remove them or since I still have a mini stump sticking out will it still try to stay alive and will it be ok throughout the budding cycle? The other plants are female I believe they are short and bushy and haven't showed their sex yet and the one I chopped was much taller then the rest and showed its sex quick, but to be safe I dont wanna keep stressing the plants if say another male does pop up and I have to cut roots again, thanks.
you should be fine
Had 6 plants....2 turned to be males....3 are females just found out today and waitn on last one im sure its a female....not to shabby bein first grow with bag seeds heh....
As long as a plant has one green leaf on it the plant will grow on. Even leaving one node with any veg on it at all and the plant will try to live on. As long as you cut below the first node you should not have any problems. Great posts by low_rdr. Cloning a mother is a great way to go. I have 2 mothers I keep along with a male in the mother/ veg room. The male was a fast strong and early flower from some ak 47 seed a buddy gave me. I clone the male and flower it all alone to gather fresh pollen for crossing with whatever I grow.
A question? For low_rdr, If you flower a plant, harvest, then bring back to veg so it can become a mother, will this effect the potency of the smoke from the clones or is this still an F1 since it's still the same plant just having flowered once. I ask because I stumbled upon a beautiful, purple bud in some bag seed I grew out. The bag was said to have been silver haze. I grew out 3 seed and one was deep purple the other 2 green. I harvested the buds, which all smoke quite nice btw, but I kept the purple one alive. I am currently cloning off it for the outdoor season.
I have never done a reveg. I'm curious to it, but have no idea what effect (if any) it would have on the strain. I would think if the revegged plant comes out normally, so would the clones. that's just an assumption though.
I've read that the results were not as good in quantity and quality from a re-vegged plant. But that is just hearsay.
