I was transplanting the other night and I was wondering how many people break up the rootball or how many people just transplant as is? I've done it both ways with no noticeable difference. Attached is a pic( sorry about hps) that is coming out of a 1 gal and going into 3 gal. I'm curious to which route you choose?

I've done it both ways (to house plants not MJ) and never noticed a significant difference between either way but when I do break up the root ball I do it gently.
I use to take a sharp steak knife and slice into the root ball from four sides & cut away some lower roots and soil.
Then I got lazy. It kinda depends on how much longer you are gonna veg... IMO
Roots don't grow much more during flowering, usually.
I'm no expert but I agree with growmamma.
I just transplant it without messing with the rootball. I would think this would cause less shock on the plant.

I saw a demonstration by a Master Gardener transplanting a Lilac bush in a church yard. He showed everyone after the Sunday service how he washed out all the roots of dirt and spread them out horizontally in the prepared hole. It was really different... The funny part is, the next week that friggin' bush was toast! hahaha!!!
Wow that would suck haha. Good thing it was just a lilac bush. I have never went to that extreme but I have broke loose the bottoms of the rootballs a little. These days I just concentrate on the easiest, fastest, and cleanest way I can get things done. Man I love the shopvac on those days haha.Quote:

I never touch the root ball. That is how I was taught.
I also tend to let it be. But occasionally the roots can become bound(wrap in a circle) in the bottom of the pot. I do pull that mass off. I do usually prune, bottom branches of plant.

I don't let them get root bond because the roots growing around the sides are wasted I transplant as soon as the roots reach the sides. The more roots the more flowers.......let em be.
ROOTS: Could you advise me of something perhaps? I just put a huge hole in theis place, filled it up with "4 in one soil". The good, good stuff. I have 6 or so little plants...no idea if they're male, female...gay??? I'll find out when I start trikin' them. My buddy gave me a clone. It was just transplanted a week ago into a bit bigger pot. It's a foot high, but it IS a female. I wanna put it in the ground TODAY, but my buudy thinks I should leave it in the pot for ahwile before putting straight into the ground...let the root system establish in the bigger pot a bit, then transplant it into the deep new soil hole. Do ya'll think if I used liquid root stimulator 5-15-5, and put it in the ground today, that wouldn't stunt or kill it??? Like, because it hasn't been in the new container very long. If I'm careful, and gently take the entire amount of soil ball with the one foot high female plant from clone, and put it in the ground today and dab a splash of that root stimulator and water in it after, I should not end up with a dead nice little bud baby making bitch eh? I can't see having to wait for it to establish better root system in the slightly bigger pot that buddy put it into a few days ago. It's alive and already stinky, so putting it into the new garden with root stim. should be all right eh??? I'm not to good with clones...just from seed to bud...HOPEFULLY. I once put these two plants that were barely a foot high, very bushy, but had tricked themselves. Clones that some young chick had in about a cup of soil each only, but she had them under 24 hour a day HPS lights from day one. They grew about a foot high, she gave them to her parents, they put them outside, and due to them then getting less light, they tricked themselves. Bart Simpsons all over both plants, but sickly looking in that spoonful of soil, root bound like crazy and ready to die TOMORROW kinda thing. I transplanted them the next day. One in garbage can each full of 4 in one soil & bat guano...the things went insane in less than a week. Best plants I ever grew, so...??? Thanks.

I think what you buddy is saying is the plant has only been in the container a short time so the roots haven't grown into the soil and if you take it out to now the soil will fall away disturbing the new roots, you don't want it root bound either.
