Lighting with 2-600watt HPS and heat???
I am looking for the experinced with information about running 2-600watt HPS and the heat produced in thier room. I have plenty of experince with lighting and heat but not in this small of an area. The full room size is 10'x13'x7.5'. I will be using only 28sq feet of the area. The room temperature is 65deg without lights and 70 deg with 1000watts of CFL's. This is also with only one box fan blowing in fresh air on the ladies from the doorway.
Here is my main concern!!! Can I get away with running 2-600watt hps in 2-36"x48" hoods in this area with only fans blowing around the room? Should I use an inline fan in some duct work and blow air through the lights and out of the room? I do not have windows in this room neither, which means an a/c unit is out of the question. Oh, the ballast (one ballast running 2-600watt HPS) will not be in the same room to reduce a little heat too. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

2 x 600w HPS will generate much more heat than the CFLs you're currently using. In my flower room, I run 3 x 600w + 2 x 4' T-5 panels (8 tubes each); to cool it I use a 15K BTU window ac unit that comes on about a 1/2 hour after the lights come on and shuts off about a 1/2 hour after they go back off. This keeps the temps in the 70s with lights. Prior to this I used 2 x 1000w HPS with sun soaker reflectors; this setup produced much more heat than the 3 600s. If you go with the 600s, I also recommend that you get selectable digital ballasts; I personally like the Lumatek that allows the choice of 360, 400, 600 and Superlumen settings. Never use Superlumen, but the others are really useful if you need to turn things down because of the heat, which I do occasionally in the summer. If you go this way, make sure to just use 600w bulbs..

Thanks for the input. What size is your grow space? I have my lighting that I'm going to use all figured out. I realyy need to know how to keep this space below 80deg without an a/c unit because I lack the window? I have fresh air that is consistantly at 62deg available at all times to circulate.

My space is 13' L x 6.5' W x 8' H. I also use a CAP environmental controller for exhaust system and night time heater.. The exhaust fan pulls air in via a carbon filter and exits through the ceiling to a roof vent.. Here's a couple of pictures to show you how I set up. FYI - the exhaust fan is 150 cfm and I have one passive fresh air vent in the room to pull air in.

what was your temperature like befor the a/c with 600watters and just fans? very nice setup too!!! wish i had that type of option.

I never run the lights without AC, even in the winter.. The couple of times when the AC unit tripped the breaker during the summer, it got over 95 quickly. Lights just generate a lot of heat.
In your case, make sure you can suck fresh air in and if possible pull air out near the ceiling using a fairly large squirrel cage fan, probably a 6". You should also have a temp controller that will turn the fan on and off as needed. Make sure to use fans in the room to keep the air moving.

Fans are not an issue, have plenty lol...I am just woried I cant keep it cool enough. I am wondering what hood would be best for this too, an open or closed with glass?

I also ran a single 600 in a cabinet.. here I did use a sealed air cooled reflector. Best option for you would be to use similar reflectors, tie them together using flex duct, and pull your outside air through, exhausting it outside; this would be a sealed from the grow room and odor wouldn't be a problem. Pretty much like my cabinet, just on a little larger scale. Do you have places where you can penetrate the wall/ceiling and accomplish this?
This, with the ventilation I mentioned earlier will be your best option.
I'm sure if your motivated you could go find a formula to tell you specifically how many btu's each light would generate and mathematically find out how quickly you'll heat up the space.. but honestly, unless you intend to go to a lower power light, it doesn't matter. Also, using switchable ballasts, you'd already have it covered...

Sealed glass air cooled. This tent is like 9.5 long and has two sunlight supply 8 inch air cooled hoods with 600 watt bulbs. Tent stays 72f and I can keep the glass 4 inches above plants with no burring, some strains bleach though:thumbsup:. One 8 inch sunlight fan through a phresh filter. Lokk in to air cooled sealed glass much cheaper then using A.c.

Thanks for the reply. That is basically the answer I was looking for, besides the tent being smaller than the room but I get the idea. How cool is the air that you are blowing through the lights? What size fan are you using? Those are pretty cool temps for such a small area with 2-600s. What is the temp when closed with lights on? How much of a difference do you think it would make if i used open half-moon hoods and just used fans to cool the room?

Those are the temps when the tent is closed up. Go with the air cooled, fans just wont come close to what the air hoods can provide. Best to pull air from under the house or coolest room inside. In the winter you can pull air from out doors as well depending were you live.
