2000 Watt Flower Closet by GrowGoddess

Part 1

I thought I would add some information to this site about how I built my flower room.

I started off sacrificing my bedroom Posted Image and had to sleep in my living room for almost 9 months! I have a new bedroom now though Posted Image .

The bedroom measured approximately 11' x 12' with an 8' ceiling and a crawlspace underneath. I chose (2) 1000 watt switchable ballast lights to go with 50 Watts per square foot. I am running 7,500 lumens of light per square foot. So the closet comes out to be 40 square feet in size, which measures approximately 4.5' x 9'.

There was a window in the closet which I removed and boarded up with insulation and wood and used that to install the ports for exhausting my fans. I went with (2) outdoor prehung triple insulated doors for full lightproof and convenience of accessing the plants. To the left of the closet you can see a door, that is there to access the furnace pipe mostly, it was a tiny closet for the bedroom, it was pretty much unusable space for the flower room, so I painted the door white.

In this next picture, you can see I added 3 vents on the outside of the closet at the top. The vents go through the wall cavity and they work like light traps. There are 3 vents on the inside of the closet at the bottom near the floor. This is so the closet can intake air and be able to breathe while the lights are on or off.

In these next pictures you can see I added (2) 6" high output can fans 440 cfm each for a total of 880 cfm exhaust out the vents where the window was.

In this picture you can see the lighting system is done and there is also in the center a 16" osculating wall mount fan. For the custom cooling, I took the lenses out of the light hoods so that I can exhaust air from both ends of the light hoods, so there is suction from each end of the light for maximum cooling efficiency. Each fan is hooked up to each hood so that I can have the option to run only one fan but still run both lights. Like in the winter when it is cold, I only need to run one fan. It also serves a safety purpose. If one fan fails, the other fan will still be cooling both lights. I did the same with the electrical, each fan is plugged in on a separate breaker/fuse.

The room needed an air conditioner for the hot humid summers, minimum required 12,000 BTU. This had to be custom installed too, my windows slide open sideways.

Well, after building it all like above, the system worked, but I wasn't fully satisfied with the cooling and the efficiency of it. So I added an 8" high output can fan at the ceiling, I call this an air exchange fan. It only takes air from the grow closet and back into the main room. It helps keep the air temps balanced between the closet and main room. This solved a lot of problems. Like in the winter, the main room was too cold which made it unusable, even though the flower room temps were just fine. If I restricted fresh air from outside to prevent the room from getting too cold, then I was exhausting heat out of my house just as fast as it was going in. Now with the air exchange fan, that is not a problem, in the winter, I am only exhausting about 100 cfm out of the flower closet. The air exchange fan at 740 cfm putting warm air back into the main room now lets the room be usable, there is only about a 5 to 10 degree temperature difference between the main room and flower closet. The air exchange fan also helps with the closet getting too cold in the winter during lights off. Also, during humid times of the year, it helps prevent mold/fungus issues in the flower room. The air exchange fan is set up to be light proof. I can leave it running at night and keep the temps right where I want them. One other benefit of installing the air exchange fan, I was able to make use of that dead space where the furnace pipe is. Posted Image

Part 3

All three fans are equipped with a speedster speed controller so I can adjust the cooling system to meet any temperature I desire by dialing up or down the fan cfm. Now, after all of this, the lights and cooling system are all working in harmony.

Here is a picture of the electrical (it is not complete in this picture). The ballasts and the electrical is mounted in the crawlspace. I choose a 220 breaker that goes to a throw-box which converts it to (2) 110 outlets with slow blow fuses.

Here is a picture of my first test run with the closet after making sure all the equipment and temps were A-Okay, especially making sure the closet was 100% light proof. This required a lot of caulking and extra drywall mud.
There are 12 plants in this picture on a perpetual grow, I typically only have 8 bigger ones flowering. This was the first test run of the new flower closet.

I wish I could go back and edit some things.
I forgot to mention the flex pipe for the fans that cool the lights. Normally I would not use flex pipe on the intake side of a fan, due to the possibility of the flex pipe collapsing. In this case, with the Y pipe being right at the intake side of the fans and splits into two 6" it has reduced the stress of the flex pipe collapsing. If it were not for the Y pipe, I would not have used the flex pipe at the intake side. I would have used all rigid piping. Also, I was sure to use the more heavy duty flex pipe.

So is it normal for you to hang the whole plant, fan leaves and all? I started doing that a couple months ago and i swear that the bud has a better taste and smell doing that way instead of trimming then drying. Just curious to your reason.

I would not recommend 1000 watt lights for a beginner. I still don't have the 1000 watters fully mastered yet. I would recommend 400 watt or at the most 600 watt for a beginner.

As for the high cost, I purchased the highest quality equipment I could find for safety reasons. That is a lot of wattage and heat in a small area. In a closet like this it could be dangerous to use lower quality equipment in my opinion. It took me about a year of saving and a lot of work to get this closet put together. It went up piece by piece over a year span. Now that I have been running the closet for nearly two years, it has paid for itself and has helped many patients.

I would also like to mention about the air exchange fan for the closet. The air exchange fan can offer an additional safety benefit.

Without using an air exchange fan for this type of flower closet: Let's say a fire broke out for some reason, where would I put the smoke alarm? In the flower closet I probably will not hear it, due to fan noise and the closet being sealed shut. I won't smell any smoke, all the smoke will be pumping right out of the house through the ventilation fans. If I put a smoke alarm inside the main room, it would not even get triggered off due to no smoke returning to the main room.

With an air exchange fan in this type of flower closet: Let's say a fire broke out for some reason. At least half of the air flow of the closet would be pumping smoke back into the main room, where the smoke detector should be placed. The smoke going into the main room would trigger off the smoke detector and I would be able to hear the smoke detector go off and I would probably be able to smell the smoke also.

I will always utilize an air exchange fan for any flower closet I build from now on.

My old closet was very similar and I was running (2) 400 Watt lamps, but built with make-shift parts. More so due to the fact that "growing underground" was the only way then (before the law went in to effect in MI). Wasn't too keen on visiting sites or stores.

There are two reasons that I will hang the plant. 1. For legal reasons, in my state they cannot count it against the legal amount because it is not yet considered usable. 2. The plants in the picture, being that it is querkle, I prefer to hang them for at least three days. It guides the small purple leaves around the buds and helps to show off the purple color in that strain. (Per patient's request, they like to see a lot of purple (bag appeal)).

For me personally, I like to do all the manicuring as soon as possible, mostly because it is easier for me to manicure it when it is more fresh. It is more difficult for me to manicure it when the leaves start to dry and curl (excluding querkle). That is just a personal preference. There are many people that prefer to manicure when they are more dry.

For quality differences, I have found different methods work better for different strains. Some strains, I prefer them quick dried, or even bone dry.
However, with the blueberry jam, it seems to come out best when it is slow dried and long cured.

You just have to go with what seems to work best for you.
I will keep that in mind though, and pay a bit closer attention to it on comparing it hanging a few days vs. manicuring within 24-48 hours of harvesting.

Fire Extinguisher.... Great idea! I have one for each of my wood stoves, I should also have one for my flower closet!!

In all my time growing, I have not had an accident, never even had a light bulb blow up on me, but that stuff happens. For example, a brand new fluorescent for my neighbors garage, just caught fire one day. You just never know a fixture could fall, electrical failure, lamp explode, etc. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the info. I don't have tv service, so I don't get any news besides what I read online. I am in a rural area with few options for tv service. I really didn't know that is was so common.

No worries about no tv, I got my big screen and lots of movies and internet too!

:S2:I have lived in Cablelessness for the past 28 years -counted every one of 'um! Puts a new meaning on Direct TV for me (had it since 1991)! No cable, no Natural Gas and no do it again! Experiencing Fiber-optic experience right now and loving it HDTV (was using a USB Thumbstick drive for a few months). Past up a real good deal on a new home yesterday-All Electric! No fiberoptic, no cable and no gas :( But then, I did have a lot more time for gardening :greenthumb:!

Gonna hang a 55" TV on the wall tomorrow, any advice? Last one was 47" and has smaller wallpod! first 55" and not lifting it alone!

My niece doesn't sign up for cable and does everything on-line also! I use to go to the library to jump on Hi-speed once in awhile and assumed anyone younger than me can operate a PC. However, have learned differently from conversations at the cell phone company! Some can sell 'um and know nada about 'um! Oh, on no cell phone service where I was, either! That querkle is beautiful, i love the color change on the fan leaves. What are the average temps? does the plant naturally turn purple or do you need to introduce colder temps in order to bring out the purple? Ive seen some querkle thats bright green, but ive also seen some that turn a really pretty purple during late flowering. I guess it all depends on your pheno

From what you've posted it seems like your really into the medicinal aspects of cannabis, subcool has a strain called Jack the ripper that has been tested at 26% thc, with a reaaaaallllyyyyy high % of CBD's, THCV's and CBN's. It contains a lot of the rare cannabinoids that have shown promise to slow cancerous cell growth.

What exactly are you growing those beauties in? Are they soil or soilless?

Check with a local a/c mechanical contracting company and see about what's called a fire damper... install it behind where your vent louvers are, if and hopefully not , a fire breaks out these dampers shut thus sealing the room , no air in or out .... a few dollars for security... imo

Average temps: 75 - 78 degrees F. The querkle doesn't get much purple in the summer, but during the cooler months, it starts to purp up in late flower when the temps are cooler during lights off. You can also help it purp up by feeding with cold water.
Here is a little sample of the purple fan leaves. Even have a little blue tint to them.

I do have access to subcool's genetics, I have spoken with him recently too. I am hoping in the near future to be chosen to run some of his test beans. Wish me luck!! I do plan to try some more of his strains, I think the next one will be plushberry, I just love that pink in the buds!

I grow in soil, 100% organic. Never messed around with hydro or aeroponics.

GG check out Flame Defender extinguishers. They are a must. FLAME DEFENDER FIRE EXTINGUISHER - 4.4 lbs / 2 KG Covers 4' (1.24 meters diameter) [740702] - Miscellaneous - Accessories - Discount Specialty Farm, Greenhouse & Garden Supply Store - Horticulture Source

Also, put the alarm in both rooms. They are cheap and you may get a few more minutes notice if you happen to hear it. Ideally it would be hard wired into your house-wide system so if triggered it would set off the whole house. I'm rewiring mine at the moment to achieve this result. Can't be too careful.

Oh and did you install arc and ground fault interrupters at the mains? Also a good idea.

Sulfur burner info:
I have used the greenhouse vaporizer for sulfur, only needed to use it once though. I had encountered powdery mildew and the sulfur burner solved the issue 100%, never had an issue since. I only used the sulfur burner for a couple of hours in the grow room. I did two treatments during the time the lights would be on, but had the lights off. I do not recommend running a sulfur burner for more than 2-4 hours, or letting the sulfur burn. In my use, I only let the sulfur melt, I wouldn't allow it to burn. Just my opinion.

thats awesome. Ive met Subcool and Mzjill at an event they just had called "the school of dank" which was a three day seminar where Subcool himself gave pot growing lessons. Hes a great guy too !!, very generous with his hash :) Being able to sit face to face with one of the biggest marijuana enthusiasts in america was a once and lifetime opportunity. Ive still got a bottle of his own personal grape tincture which i use to get mentally retarted every night before bed lol.

That makes me very happy and is exactly why I posted the information.
My goal is to help patients and caregivers produce what they need.
I think cannabis is a safe alternative to pharmaceutical products.

Hey randomking, Take a close look at running three or 600w lights. Better coverage more efficient use of light with fewer watts. Worth considering.

a friend of mine keeps nagen me to get a set of adjustable 1000w digital ballasts and run them at 600w....o_O, i have thought about doing two or three 600w's to help with heat but waiting on tax's to see what im "allowed" to buy :P
