4 Seedlings, which look really wierd, 2 different strains???
Hey guys,
So I germinated 4 seeds and got 4 sprouted. They are 2 x Ortega Indica feminized and 2 x Alquimista Feminized. (These are normal strains not autoflowering ones as i'm currently growing fine).
So these seedlings have 2 and 4 leaves, they look really weird they only way I can describe them is cauliflower looking.. they look out of shape and deformed, but in a really odd way, I've taken pictures which you can see below.. but they don't do it justice.. I am not sure whats wrong with them, I can't put it down to the strains as they are two different types - so what is causing them to look like this?
I am wondering if they'll grow out of it, and the newer leaves will look normal, there is one in there that doesn't look as bad as the others but any info on WTF is going on with them would be great!
See my signature grow log to see the setup they're in.
Thanks in advance!

4 Seedlings, which look really wierd, 2 different strains???
the look on the surface of the soil worries me more than the leaves. the soil looks dry and a little contaminated by limescale or something! are you using reverse osmosis water?seedlings dont mind having little excess water dont let them dry out so much!

For the most part, your lil ones look just fine.... Maybe one or two of the pics above showed abnormal leaf growth....
Want an educated response??? Educate us on your setup.... Click on the link in my sig, "The Soil Growers Troubleshooting Form".... Go there, copy the questions, bring them here, paste, answer and then we can have a better understanding of what is going on with your plants....

4 Seedlings, which look really wierd, 2 different strains???
Hey,
Well I water the seedlings using tap water thats stood still for 24 + hours..
I water them when the top part of the soil is a little dry but underneath is moist.. i wouldn't of thought they're under/overwater at this point. I've never had issues like this before.
I will fill out the form in a minute and see if that comes up with anything.
What is reverse osmosis water?

4 Seedlings, which look really wierd, 2 different strains???
Hi Ricky ,It"s water that has been cleaned with a reverse osomosis filtration system It removes contaminants from the water and that way you dont have ppm's messing with nutrient concentration. And pure water is always the best. Organic growers never use tap water it kills beneficial bacteria due to chlorine!
ppm means particals per million. for 1000000 particals of water their is the amount of contaminant 1000000/1=1 ppm 1000000/155= 155 ppm

Ricky buy a tds meter 1st test your ro water to know it's reading (ex:10ppm)2nd put lets say 4 liters of water in watering can then add your nutes( the number of ppm that your mix should have will be specified on your nutes feeding program) let's say it's 1400 ppm 3rd after adding the nutes take a reading in watering can to see concentration of the solution (ex;1650 ppm) just add a little water from their until you reached the desired concentration of 1400 ppm and voila it's done! will make the solution 10 ppm less concentrated if you want it perfect 1410 ppm is where you stop. 1400 ppm from nutes and 10 ppm from ro water!

I'm happy to see that the info I provided in, "PPM's Made Easy to Understand", was easy enough for you to understand.... So much so, you were able to pass the info on here to RickyNewman....
It's a good read Ricky....should check it out yourself as well....

Hey, thanks for the help guys!
Here is the completed form, @CGI:
What is your experience level? (first timer, novice, experienced...)
First timer/Novice (Grown before but lost it at harvest)
Your Equipment:
.1) Type and wattage of lights. (MH, HPS, CFL's, tube fluorescents, LED's)
1 x 300 watt Blue CFL (Hanging above the plants), 2 x 400watt HID stacked up shining through cupboard door (these are on plants for 10 hours a day then I take them down)
.2) Distance from tops?
2/3 inches for CFL, about 18 inches away from sides of plants are HID
.3) Reflector type? (cool tube set-up, bat wing, enclosed reflector, bare bulb...)
Standard reflector on CFL, the HID are in a box with a reflector
.4) Is there a consistent fresh air supply?
Yes from the intake fan, and the door being open
.5) Do you have an exhaust fan and a circulation fan?
Yeah, an exhaust fan/carbon filter, also two fans inside on the grow tent help circulate it.
.6) What are the bulb wattages, kelvin ratings, and schedule?
CFL: 300 watt, have a 6500K bulb and 2700k bulb, blue one in now until flowering. Then switch to red when flowering.
HID: 400watt, no idea on kelvin rating.
Schedule: 18/6 for CFL, the HID i setup each day and leave on for around 10 hours ( i can't put these in the tent as create too much heat, in the door its fine)
Your medium:
.7) Specific brand and type of soil, (coco, peat based soilless...) and anything you've added to it. (vermiculite, perlite, worm castings...)
BioBizz Organic soil
.8) Size of container.
small seedling pots, not sure on the exact size.. probably about 2.5 inches diameter and 4/5 inches deep?
.9) Did you use peat pucks (or similar) to root clones or germinate seedlings?
Germinated from seed in paper towels.
Your nutrients and water:
10) Source of water? (tap, bottled or filtered) What's it's ph before adjusting?
tap water, left to stand 24 hours or more.
11) Method of checking water ph. (ph pen, test strips, aquarium test kit...)
ph test kit, put some soil in bottle, add this liquid i have with the kit, it turns colour, match colour with chart.
12) Method of adjusting water ph. (phosphoric acid, white vinegar, hydrated lime, PH Up...)
Not had to do this yet.
13) Specific brand and N-P-K ratio for each bottle. List dosages (quantity per gallon) and current feeding schedule.
I have biobizz bloom, but have not fertizlied yet - will do at around 5 weeks after sprouting.
14) How often are you watering between feedings, and how much per watering?
WHen they need it, so when the soil dries a little i water until soil is completly most and drains through bottom
15) Any additives or tea's? (Superthrive, CalMag, molasses, Mother's Earth...)
None.
16) Are your ph levels stable, or do they fluctuate?
JUst tested it and it looks between 7.0 and 7.5.
17) What is your ingoing water's ph? ...your runoff ph?
No idea.
18) Do you foliar feed? If so, with what, how often, and at what time do you spray?
I don't do this, closet i do is misiting with tap water (same water i feed them with) - maybe couple times a week.
Your growroom:
19) Indoors or outdoors?
Indoors.
20) What size of closet, room or hut?
60x60x140
21) What are the temps and humidity levels while lights are on? ...With lights off?
lights on: fluctuate from 80 - 85
lights off: fluctuate from 70 - 80
22) Have you seen signs of insects in the growroom?
not yet, thank god.
Your strain:
23) What strain are you growing? (Indica dominate or Sativa dom?)
Ortega Indica, Alquimista.
24) From seeds or clones?
seeds
25) Is this an autoflower strain?
no
I hope this helps :)

4 Seedlings, which look really wierd, 2 different strains???
Tap water isn't the best, IMO, but many people successfully grow using it.... I'm not a fan of it because of the extras that the municipal water companies put in it.... But like mentioned, some people have no problems with it.... If you can, get yourself a source of RO or distilled.... This way you can completely control the amount of ppms in your nutrient mix....
Along with the Bio Bloom, you should get yourself the Fish Mix and Alg A Mic for a complete and balanced NPK mix....and some Cal-Mag....and a micro nutrient that you think will work for you....(I prefer Liquid Karma).... When thinking about nutrients, you need to think balance....
pH test strips are not very reliable.... If your nute mix has any tint to it at all, your pH reading has already been altered before you even guess what the pH could be.... Digital pH meters are the most reliable.... Milwaukee makes an inexpensive one....and you will have to get the pH calibrating solution as well.... Then to adjust your pH up and down, you simply get yourself some pH up and pH down....very inexpensive and last a long frigging time....
Have you tried running just one of the 400w HID to see if temps permit 18/6??? Just wondering.... Once you are able to control the temps, your plants are going to thank you with those 2 - 400watters....
Other than what was just mentioned, everything looked ok....IMO.... I can't really say what is causing the cauliflower look but I can say that most of the pics that I saw looked like healthy young plants.... I strongly recommend changing your water source and getting a complete line of nutrients.... pH is very important as well....and while we're at it, might as well get yourself a ppm meter....don't want you to over fert your lil ones....
Hope this helps....If you have any more questions, ask away....

4 Seedlings, which look really wierd, 2 different strains???
Hey CGI,
Thanks again for the reply and top info!
I think I am going to stick with tap water for now unless I see drastic deteriation. As looking at the autoflowers they're fine ;-) I will update pics later today as all shown signs of sex now, all females and all look great! Back to the seedlings though, they look better today, I think it was a case of too much light/heat for them to start with, think it messed them up and made them look cauliflower like. I have moved them down from the raised platform they are on, so they are some distance from the lights. I am also not letting the soil dry out as much with them now.. i've started two other seedlings barneys blue cheese this way too, so ill monitor those if they pop ok then i know im ok.
As for the 400watt, I can't get that in the tent no matter what i try. The best I can do is leave the tent door open with the 400watt pointing in, the temps stay around 81 at the moment. However we're comming into winter so the average temperature should drop but i doubt it will allow me to play the 400watt in the tent. I need better intake/exhaust for that, which i can't afford right now. so i will stick with it pointing into the tent.. after all this is my first grow.. i can always perfect my technique and when i get a better house i can do a better grow :)
Now onto more questions, I am stupid when it comes to nutrients.. I have the biobizz bloom, the other stuff you mention I have no idea what it is or how to use it.. can you give me a run down or a decent way to start feeding? I've read a lot about nutrients but its so easy to fuck up i don't wanna go experimenting, not when my plants look so good. I was just going to use the bloom and see how i get on.. if you can give me more detailed run down on a method i can use ill try it out as i trust your knowledge.
Anyways, thanks for the help!

Hi Rickynewman If you dont want to buy ro water system .Because of maintenance cost and initial purchase price of 100$+. You can use a 18l bottle and fill it with Ro Water at any good grocery store or wine supply store. it will cost around 2$ or 3$ for 18l. if you want to test Ro water on your present or next grow, you could try this. And if you decide Ro water is not for you. You wont be stuck with useless equipement!

No problem........
The Bio Bloom you have is 1-part of a 3-part formula.... The other 2-parts are Bio Grow and Alg A Mic.... I've been using these products for years and have nothing bad to say about them.... Anyway, this 3-part formula is only part of the complete line of nutrients that when used together give your plants a balanced nutrient mix.... However not the complete line is needed for awesome results.... And depending on the soil you are using, you might not have to get any more nutrient bottles than what you already have....
So before we go on - What is the nutrient content in the soil you are using??? Which exact BioBizz Organic Soil are you using??? How much space do you have for flower??? What are the largest containers you can use without losing lumens/space???
