1st time grow as a trial run while I'm waiting on the seeds to come

Hi Guys,

As the title states, this is the first time I am growing, as a trial run. I'm receiving, hopefully, seeds soon and I think that I got everything down pat. I got the 2 bigger plants back in late May and the smaller one, which is supposedly ak47, in july. As to the strain of the bigger ones, I haven't a clue, as they were given to me and the person didn't know what strain they are.

The 2 big ones have been placed in a 12/12 cycle a week ago for flowering and they are under a 400 w hps light. The "ak47" and 3 clones of the unknowns are under a fluorescent 105w lamp (the spiral type). I have them at 18/16. Maybe I'll put them at 20/4, but not sure. Well, being that it's 2:52 am here and I have to get up in 3 hours to go to work, I'll post pics real quick.

I also tested the PH of my water today with one of those paper strips and I believe that I got a near 7 providing that I did it right, lol.

Also, once I finish the flowering room up in my attic, I'll post pics. It has, roughly, 7.5 square meters with the cieling sloping from just under 2 meters to 50 cm. I have the ladies in there as we speak, as it is the darkest (completely) area that I have. Today I'm going out to buy the ducts and fans necessary to ventilate the area well. I did install a circulating fan and by next month I'll be installing a 600 watt hps in there and taking out the 400 watt that I currently have to use for the veg room, combined with the 105 w fluorescent light that I have.

They look green and healthy and happy :) u sure this your first grow? LOL. Your LST is looking good too. Nothing looks wrong or bad to me. Keep us updated

Thanks! I have been really studying this topic (much to the dismay of some users here, who've answered the 1000 or so questions that I postes, you know who you are :cool:) because I live in Argentina and getting buds (or flowers as we call them here) are reeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy hard to come buy. As an example, I smoke buds once every 2-3 months on average. What I get is pressed crap that gives me a body buzz (the last time it seemed that it made my body temp drop, even with the heater at full blast). So I do want to have a great crop and never have to worry about buying anymore. Also I do have seeds coming to me soon hopefully:

LSD
White Widow
Fruit Automatic
20 auto Haze
roadrunner auto
white siberian
sweet deep grapefruit
critical
diesel
russian rocket fuel

so I need to know what I'm doing, lol. I'm really looking forward to trying the LSD strain, I hear that it's an intense high. Any recommendatios as to which one I should plant first? I do plan to have some of the haze and the other auto's so that I can have something to smoke while I wait for the rest of them to catch up, lol

Oh, by the way, the tips of the big leaves are yellow (about 2 mm). I know that I'm not over/under ferting. I believe it's due to the cold temp? I'm having problems maintaining a stable temp (due to the attic's draftiness). The temp averages 18 degrees celsius.

Thanks!. it's not anything to be concerned about I guess. They've been like that for a while now (a month) and the plants are growing rapidly. Just to test my theory, I am building a "homebox" tonight complete with the lamp, 2 ventilators, tubing, mylar, etc. I'll post pics once I'm done. If it's the temp that's causing the yellowing, once they're in the box and receiving the heat from the lamp, it'll be all good.

I'm a bit concerned about the size of the pots I have them in. Do you know if they're okay? I can't remember what size they are.

Is this your first grow as well?

Check out the bottom of the pot and if you see roots coming out the drain holes its time to transplant or when its time to water next try gently squeezing all around the pot and turn the plant upside down while your hand is on top of the dirt. The pot should slide off pretty easy and if the roots are bunched up at the bottom (a big circle of roots) then its time to transplant. Its best to do this when the dirt is dry. It makes it alot easier IMO.

Which bulb you gonna use?
-the 400w is good for a 10sqft box
-the 600w is good for a 18sqft box

I have a 400 w right now. Anyways I was planning on doing one 10 sq feet or so. I have big flowering space that I built, but since I only have 1 light for now, it doesn't heat the space up.

I've been growing for quite awhile. Started when I was 14 doing outdoor, trying to be like the guys I was reading about in high times. After a few disasters and some OK, moved to Texas and really got into when o was 19. Did a few big grows, and alot of learning and reading everything I could find I moved to indoors just 2 years ago. Alot more work but well worth the effort. My current journal is my first witj actual decent genetics. As long as me and the wife get along and no more disasters happen like last time ( still haven't forgiven her, that journal is here somwhere) I think this is my best grow to date. :)

Sorry to hear about the set back :( I was going to post pics of my setup but I have pink eye and I wasn't up to setting anything up. I'll start on it tonight.

My last question, I swear. I know that it takes around 2 weeks for the plant to show flowers/male attributes, but it's now been 8 days and shouldn't something be showing?

Some plants show pistils while still in vegetative state. This one may be a late shower.. or there is a light leak in the attic?

if there is a light leak, it's extremely minimal, less than moonlight strength.

also, where the branching occurs from the main stem, the "joints" are starting to get swollen (I don't want to sound like a total noob, but I am one!:smokin:) I'll see if I can get pics for tonight, my camera broke the other day :(

I'm guessing they are healing from the LST (low 'stress' training), so the added stress, plus most of the plant has to change the direction of it's branches now that gravity has 'changed direction' in a sense.

Thats why I quoted you saying "..Im trying out lst on them."

I had a plant last grow go 20+ days into flower and not show sex, then when it did it exploded and just about caught up to its Sisters.

Your girls are beautiful. Looks like you HAVE done your homework!
Personally I go 1 gal of container size per expected foot.
Lsd is a rediculous strain. Wicked strength, excellent mix of sativa/indica effects.
Some of those strains should only be attemted after you get a lil more experience.
Anything diesel or sour can be bug/mold weak prone. Those girls are best suited to colder times of the yr. Just my experience...
I can not stress strongly enough that you MUST make your area an environment unto itself. I belive that you cant have enough air fitration or flow/exchange. This comes with the caveat that YOUR AREA M U S T BE SEALED. I find it best to have an overpressure in my room. More air going in than out. Neutral is acceptable, but NEVER underpressure. The reason for this is even if you do have a small leak it is blowing OUT of your room, not sucking UNFILTERED air in. Dont know what your budget is but a very cheap and effective fiter is pantyhose. Any questions plz feel free to ask. I am by no means a botonist but i've been doing this for years and may be able to help you avoid the hard/expensive pitfalls/failures i've had.

Thanks for the advice! I am building a smaller box for now and I have installed the fans so far. I didn't know about the pantyhose, good tip.

The hopeful ladies are going into their 2nd week of flowering and I still can't tell if they're going to be girls.

Alright, we are officially 2 weeks into the flowering period as of today and I believe that little flowers are coming out (not sure though, it could be my noob eyes deceiving me :(). I will take some macro pics of them at 7 pm EST and post them.

I built a nice light proof enclosure (finally) out of pvc pipes and 100 micron nylon tarp. I installed a different reflector (enclosed) for my 400 hps and used the batwing reflector for my 105 watt fluorescent light (see pics). I also installed 2 fans, the one at the top is for exhaust and the one at the bottom is for intake. I have the intake pipe bringing air from outside through a window (see pics also).

What I had thought what was going to be an uneventful grow, it's starting to become a nightmare for me. My ladies have become afflicted with curling of their leaves and yellow spots and in some places, holes. I honestly don't know what to do.

I may have some unfortunate news.......my plants may be males from what I can tell. Could I get an expert's opinion? And if indeed they are male, is there anything that I can do with the leaves? brownies?

I think you're right. Those BASTARD males! I must be one of the luckiest persons when it comes to female to male ratio. Last year 6 out of 6 seedlings were female, this year 10 out of 12 were female. My friend grew 7 plants from seed and 4 turned male this year. A few years ago 9 out of 10 I grew were female(too bad I fried 6 of them).

Pic #1 says male. should only be one calyx there.
-But.. If you have the room id let it go another week to be sure.
