guess i'll try indoors..
for the last couple of years i've been growing outdoors. recently the planning comission here in san berdo county made outdoor growing illegal. i don't want to set up a grow room and have considered doing a closet grow, but i see abig problem with heat build up. my house is not air conditioned and in the summer it can get up to the same as outdoor temps, around 85 degrees or so. and i don't want to run a AC.
so here's my question. has anyone out here grown just in the front room near a window? my plan is to have 2-4 plants in 2-3 gallon containers and suppliment the natural light with CFLs. in the evening i can move them into a room that is very dark.
so basically i'd be using the natural night/day cycle. now, i know this is not ideal for optimum growth, but think about it, they do just fine outdoors with this light schedule.
i know there are people into indoor grows who freak out if there's even a small LED on a timer giving off light during flowering. but when growing outdoors, there's a full moon, and all kind of other lights from houses and cars, and none of that seems to effect growth all that negatively.
again, i realize this won't give me the kind of yields as doing it the correct way, but will it work enough to get me some smoke.

If you grow in a greenhouse it's not considered, at least to me.. As growing outdoors.. It would be worth looking at your laws to see if it is even mentioned.. Worth a try... Right?

true dat! but this law just passed last week, and i don't think it's been thought through to that point. right now it seems like there's a lot of confusion on this, and a green house is in the gray area. also, my outdoor grow was pretty low key, and i think a green house would be too much of a curiosity and i'll get lots of questions from neighbors. even though i am legal, i'd just rather avoid that kind of attention.

that's awesome Frank! but WOW 7 months!! i'm guessing if i were to add some lights along with the window light, it may be faster. i'm kind of worried about the dark cycle. when i'm home at night, which is most of the time, i can move them into the dark room. but sometimes i'm not, so they'd be left by the window overnight which might mess up the plants progress? i guess i'll just try and see. how did the smoke turn out and how much did you get?

Unless you can strictly control the lights from neighboring rooms, passing cars and/or street lights...you're going to be disappointed. Especially when it's time to flower.
Have you seen the Dealing With Heat Issues thread in my signature? It's worth taking a look at. The more control you have, the better the results can be.

just read it Rusty, to control temps i'd need to run an AC if i were to do a grow room, and i'm not going to do that. i think i can get plenty of light to the plants by the window with lights added. i'm more worried about darkness, since from what i've read indoor plants can't take ambient light, like outdoor plants can, even though nobody can say why. my guess is it's because outdoor plants are used to day turning to night slowly, and with indoor grows day and night come instantly. so i'm hoping that since my grow will basically be following the natural slow happening day/night cycle, the plants will react to ambient light like outdoor plants, which seem to have no problem with it. not ideal, but worth a try. back in the days before grow lights, people did window grows with good luck. it's kind of like back in the day when there was nothing but analog watches, everyone know how to tell time. since digital watches came out less and less people can tell you what time it is if you give them an analog watch, they're so used to being told what time it is. the old ways still work, we just need to remember how to use them. or maybe i'm full of shit, we'll see.

You can continue to grow year round with simply a south facing window and a dark closet. In fact, if you or someone else is available to move the plants during flowering twice daily you won't need a lighting set-up at all. I made one b/c having to be home at specific times was a problem. The following plants were all started last November and did pretty good all winter in the same windows as pictured. The flowering girl goes into a dark closet 14 hours per day now. My only drawback was plant size. During a winter grow, I only get 3 footers as opposed to my normal 5-6' outdoor grows. However, should you decide to start now the increased direct sun during the summer will have those girls wanting 5 gal. buckets in no time!.
During the winter, I simply left on the bedroom lights 2 hours past sunset to prevent premature flowering. About 4 weeks ago I shut the light off, then of course they started flowering on a natural 12/12 spring equinox sun. So now, I saved 1 as the mother and am forcing 2 more to finish rather than reverting them back to vegetative.

I grow mine in a south facing sunroom up in the Bay Area. I started my first grow less than four weeks ago and today I can see the white calyxes forming. You can see what I mean by following the "Sunroom Grow" link in my sig. Good luck!

StoneMeadow, that looks great! you've got a green thumb, for sure.

Thank you for the compliment, flakeyfoont. I just wanted to assure you that mmj can be successfully grown indoors here in Cali with only modest supplemental lighting. I don't heat or a/c my sunroom, either. I simply open doors at each end as needed to assure a steady cross flow of fresh air when the temp in there gets into the upper 80's. I plan to grow mmj year round in my sunroom, just as I do with fruits and veggies. Try it...you'll like it! :)
