Whats your take on trimming leafs
ok im asking around. Im running a lil 400w about 14in or so from my baby's, and there are great looking fan leafs but its blocking a good amount of light im wondering how bad is it to take off some of the fan leaf's for the lower nutes or is it better off leaving them and let it do its thing.
and then how much do you trim before flowering so that the med's are not all leafy but all the flowering points are getting enough light im going to have to use the 400w to flower so i need to get as much light as possible without stunting the growth
if anyone has done anything that worked out with good yields & quality please help by sending LINKS, PIC'S, VIDEOS of what to cut and what not to cut would help alot thanks :rasta:

I use to take them off,for better light penetration before I realized that I was compromising the photosenthesis. They need those leaves! Just fold them back.

Bend those little suckers into submission at this time! lol :S1:
Although, I still remove some later on but that is by personal choice. A lot of growers will disagree on it but I have seen the benefits and will continue to do what I feel needs to be done regardless.
Best of luck! :)

I have bent a few and tied a couple to get light but there are some that i can not bend far enough or they come right back in the way, some people say cut the leaf its self but dont cut it off regardless the bottom cola's are going to get shit for light when i click it to flower so i need to cut what i can soon i can only cut in veg right here are a few pics of my (Purple Napal) that i need to know if i should trim

How about this? Take one lady and cut away. Leave the others alone. Wait and see after the grow which one produced more. But do NOT cut more than a 1/3 of the fan leaves off unless you want to really push the pedal to the metal.
Then you can report back your findings and give a little more education to an educated group of grow of folks. ;)

should i clean out the middle growth and so you all will know i ran it 18/6, 19/5 then 24/0 for awhile and dropped it to 20/4 im about to flower soon so you can vary with timing and not stress it out i will let you know what goes with cutting but 4sure dont cut more then 1/3 of the fan leafs what about all the small growth in the middle

Pick a light schedule and stick with it. Otherwise you risk stressing your girls into hermies.

i trim any fan leaf that is covering a growing tip, unless it can be bent or trained out of the way. I snap them off at the stem instead of using a knife and cutting them. It breaks the cells apart from each other, as opposed to just cutting through them.(i like to stimulate nature)
I trim week 1 of flower, week 3 of flower(right in the middle of stretch), and week 6-7(im harvesting in 2 weeks anyways, GET LIGHT TO EVERY BUD POSSIBLE). If a bud doesnt get light, it doesnt grow. When it comes down to it i want colas, not fan leaves.
All of the buds that dont recieve adequate light are going to be small waste of time/hash making buds anyways, and they're a pain in the ass to trim.
here are some of the plants(indoor as well as outdoor) that i grow using this kind of trimming. I dont just go crazy and cut fan leaves off, i only remove them in order to incease light penetration and bump my yield.

Whew, a like minded person in regard to fan leaves. HEY DRUDOWN, you better duck because there are some Rep points flying at you from me!

Thanks alot im trimming it up and going to flower it in 2 days im also tying alot of colas to grow out more then up the middle it is loving it so far but there are still big fan's at the top blocking what could be alot of light i just dont want to cut the fan leaf to early. how soon can you cut them from when it grow's out from the cola? do i have to wait till it is larger & dark green and do i have to leave fan's on every cola right now?

As Dru knows, I trim also...I recommend reading Ed Rosenthal's book "Marijuana Growing Tips"...in it there is a chapter on trimming for higher yields with pics and description of how to, why, and what happens when you do trim...I tried it and it worked for me. As the others here who trim have said, just don't go crazy cutting fan leaves off and your plants, or buds, will thank you for it....later on, so will your head! ONLY trim if you just can't get light to that bud any other way, but just make sure all the buds get ALL the light they can for that 12 hours.

that book didnt really explain other then how to stake off six cola's i think i got it im just having trouble getting light around the back cuz i only have a 400w so im trying to bend them in to the light i might do what he says and cut off the smaller cola's im going to post pic's of what im cutting & bending in a few
Whats your take on trimming leafs
here are a few cut's and bends im trying they look empty right now and should i flower or wait a few more days to see if i need to trim/guide the cola's more is it ok to move/cut the colas around for light once it start's to flower oh and is it fine to raise my light to get it to reflect and spread out more. i have it at about 12" but the cola's are fighting for light its not even growth

You might want to look into doing a Scrog with a couple plants, this way you will fill your space and get nice medium size buds, but lots. You would be able to control your shading better and iv seen nice yields with this method.
Good luck:rasta:

my bad if i sound dumb but whats scrog is that where there is only one nug on the plant
Whats your take on trimming leafs
SCROG (SCreen Of Green) is training the plants for an even canopy height thru a screen or mesh, making sure each bud gets plenty of light. There are horizontal and vertical scrogs...there's lots of info on SCROG growing here somewhere...Do a search. You can switch your bulb to HPS now if you want or anytime in the next week or so...it's not that critical as to when, as some continue flowering with MH bulbs, since they may not have access to an HPS bulb. I switch bulbs when I switch to 12/12.

i do trim leafs only if the tips get a bit crappy like brown or if yellow tips i wouldn't cut more than half unless really necessary m8 these leafs are whats feeding your plant light an such for the bud's just move them out the way if obstructing....sweet

ok i cut away the other day removing about 1/3 of the big fan's from the main stem leaving all the bigger one's on the cola's along with training almost all the cola's to grow out more then up in to each other (I have a feeling that im going to have to do something like a scrog or just tie the nug's so they wont brake the stem any ideas on what to use other then scrog) And how long does it take for flowering to start after 12/12 under MH ive had the pistals/white hairs for awhile before flowering.:rasta:

Nice job Dru! It's about time somebody actually showed what they do....I get the feeling sometimes these people who won't trim think we just rape the plants of all fan leaves or something...nope, not true...What Dru is showing here is just what I do, too.
Nice lookin girls there too, bro! I give this vid...:thumbsup:
If you can, show us again, every time you do it, until there finished, so's the folks will know why! +reps
