Steve Sarich, Medical Marijuana's Bad Boy, Gives the Finger to Sensible Washington


​As we noted in our cover story last year, medical-marijuana entrepreneur Steve Sarich likes to stir up trouble. And he seems to get a particular kick out of giving the metaphorical finger to pot activists who get on his bad side. That's exactly what he's done to Sensible Washington, the group that ran last year's pot legalization initiative.

As he gleefully told Seattle Weekly yesterday, Sarich (pictured at right) has registered himself as the owner of Sensible Washington with the Secretary of State. (The proof is on the office's website.)

Sarich has been busy since the Weekly wrote about him last May, shortly after a shoot-out at the Kirkland home where he ran a dispensary that sold pot to numerous patients. He moved to North Bend, opened a new dispensary in SoDo (called Access 4 Washington). and established offices in Montlake Terrace for a business he runs providing doctor's authorizations for pot.

​He has not, however, affiliated himself with Sensible Washington other than through the Secretary of State filing. He and the real head of Sensible Washington, Seattle attorney Douglas Hiatt (pictured at left), have kept an arm's-length distance from each other, each professing different philosophies toward the pot industry. Hiatt talks up the nonprofit model, which Sarich dismissed as a sham. And the brash entrepreneur isn't enthusiastic about Sensible Washington's crusade to legalize marijuana as a whole, not just for medical purposes. "That's not my issue," he says.

Sarich claims he carried out his Secretary of State stunt to make a point. Sensible Washington is done with last year's initiative, Sarich notes, yet the organization has continued to raise money. "Where is the money going?" he asks, suggesting that something nefarious might be afoot if the organization hasn't bothered to register with the Secretary of State.

Hiatt concedes that the group has continued to raise money. He says that's because it plans to file a new pot-legalization initiative next week.

He adds that Sensible Washington is registered with the IRS and the state Public Disclosure Commission, if not with the Secretary of State (Sarich's filing aside). "We have the common law trademark. If he wants to fight about it in court, we'll fight about it."

But Hiatt himself does not seem so inclined, portraying registration with the Secretary of State as meaningless--unlike another stunt foisted upon him last year, when someone laid claim to the attorney's website.

In other words, as Ben Livingston of the Cannabis Defense Coalition says, Sarich's shenanigan "seems like more of a funny '**** you' than anything else."

Steve is pointing out that hiatt is involved in some funny money business...I think he should show these guys are just like the shits they are...

I have documents from the bar association from a complaint I filed on Steinborn/ hiatt and let me tell you...this guy is not who we the public thinks he is...he works with our court system to help fry patients in court...he tried to do it to all orvald patients from what he filed in that record with the wa. bar association.

Although I don't agree with all the games, some good info. comes out of the playing...

Sarich has a valid point. Non profits are a joke, someone always makes money in a non profit and some times they make a lot. I don't see why there should be any requirement that dispensaries should be forced to be non profits, pharmacies aren't. And of course Steve is getting pretty rich off of this movement but thats just the kind of guy he's always been.

One has to look in the correct place to see what he has done..and on the internet is not the place to be looking..as it won't be there...nor will you find it looking at the cases he has done, unless you know exactly what your looking for specifically...and one must have some knowledge others don't..

Try looking in the bar complaint files in which either a complaint was filed against him or someone he represented in the bar complaint...that's where you will find it. straka v. steinborn is a good one to start with..lol.

Steve should not be throwing stones, when he is selling meds from Calif. at his store and not helping local growers, and who is he to steel from others when he is making 80,000 plus a month and not paying a dime in tax's.

All you have to do is read Steve's biography and its easy to see what he's all about. Its always been about the money and he's done fairly well for himself from time to time. He's just a greedy old drunk who doesn't want to admit he's getting old so he keeps young pussy around all the time. Can't say I blame him but its obviously only the money that keeps these young girls around him.

Okay, a couple of things here....

Cannacare.com is not taken(well maybe it is now, but it wasn't last week). Sarich's website is cannacare.org


The company you are looking at is based in California, not Washington. All Sarich's stuff is in Washington AFAIK.

I own stock in one of those companies, so what? I think I might have made a great investment in a penny stock, WOOHOO!

I think the sss in Adamsss name is for the sound a snake makes when it is signalling danger, lol.

I think Hiatt just isn't interested in entering into the Peyton Place world of Steve Sarich. And I'm sure Steve has a lot more money than Doug does. He has trouble getting any of the big money from NORML or some of the other supposedly MMJ movement organizations because he isn't interested in drafting up intiatives that allow these same outfits to capitalize on the market. He just wants it made legal so we can end the stupidity.

Like many others in the community Doug Hiatt has his detractors and supporters. I tend to see overall holistically, he's got the right think in his heart and mind. And he just may not agree with someone else's interpretation of the laws. :confused:

Me I've always gone by and stood by the laws were unconstitutional in the first place, regardless of what a court, any court may say. Frankly, that's my right to be civilly disobedient, even if the consequence may result in incarceration or worse. And, I've taken nearly all they have dished out so far. Wore me down, but I'm still standing the same line!!! :D

He still takes pictures, which I don't have a problem with. I think he even has a bit of talent in this. Steve is just practicing capitalism and he's perfectly able to do that. Its ingrained into American society. You just have to watch people like this because they'll try to cross the line and say they're being benevolent in some way, which isn't true, just to increase there wealth.
Legalize MJ and you put these kind of people out of business or at least greatly decrease there profit margin.

I would expect that yearly renewals will be something our legislature tries to push too. Its a great revenue generator except for the people needing the medicine, Its capitalism. Everything is always lowered to the lowest common denominator when you follow capitalism to its logical conclusion. Cheapest materials, with the cheapest labor costs, with the least taxation and regulation and the most possibility for profit. Its what fuels worldwide drug sales. They change locations as terms become more profitable in other countries.

No corporate or insurance doctor will ever sign so that means that 'relationship will cost us each what, $500 ormore for a new treating physician yearly?

Get yourself a good Naturepath, mine isn't very expensive and he has helped with lots of things. Mostly by getting me to change my diet.
