Using texting talk in posting.

Folks, I am old, almost as old as dirt. I text, but I still spell out my words. I find trying to read 'texting english' extremely difficult and essentially when I see it I don't bother reading the post. I figure if someone is too lazy to type the word, or learn to spell, I am too lazy to read the post.

I would assume some of the other older members would be the same. I do realize old dogs need to learn new tricks....and I do often, but to read out a post in jargon is something I do not wish to do.

I'm right there with you WW. I might not be old, but I also try to spell correctly and I try very hard to use proper punctuation. When I see someone breaking these rules, I may still read the post but I can't help judging the author just a little bit as I ponder whether I should respond to their message. It is hard to take someone seriously who doesn't care how they look. :)

I use my 18 year old son to translate...it all started with him when I found out they were teaching him phonetics in K class instead of spelling....he still can't spell worth a crap and graduated with a diploma....and he was in an expensive PRIVATE school!!!!!! I'm afraid there is little hope it will get better, WW...I saw what they taught in public schools too and it's even worse...Way back in my days of school we actually had to learn the English language which included spelling, grammar and punctuation. Those days are gone my friend...:(

I think these days the teachers put more emphasis on properly putting on and wearing a condom than on the English language...kinda sad really...

I am sure you saw in the news how 1/4th of the military recruits, high school grads, cannot pass the basic entrance examination.

I don't blame the schools, again, we have failed as parents. Especially I don't blame the teachers, their hands are so tied for fear of harassment claims. My kids can spell at least.

Ya Tank, Four Finger Lids we called them and it was indeed a baggie stuffed. Bet it was close to 1.5 oz. Then the little pocket oz scales....remember them...

It is a shame that our education system has turned it's back on some of the fundamentals just because there are machines that do it for you now. :rolleyes:

That basic entrance exam was one of the easiest tests I ever took, and it surprised me when the recruiter said, "well boys looks like we got a genius on our hands" :wtf:

Yea, I guess I failed somewhat as a parent....but hey, all first and only time parents are at best amateurs!!! It's not the only fail I've had either...I received my PHD (Pig Headed Dogma) from H.K.U. (Hard Knocks Univ.)!!! LOL! Actually I have a great kid and other than his spelling skills he's pretty dam smart and stays outta trouble! And if something I have typed looks kinda like text type, it's prolly cuz I'm either really feeling lazy (from some couch lock stuff) or I'm really flying and my fingers just can't keep up and I'm too high to remember there's an edit function....;)

WW it's funny you should bring this up as I just got an email from my ol HS sweetheart a few mins ago...(yea after 38 years we still keep in touch!) dealing with this very subject: It went like this lamenting the decline of capitalization in writing, which is something these txtn kids like to forget...Capitalization in writing can mean the difference between "helping Uncle Jack off a horse" and "helping uncle jack off a horse"....LOL! Hope ya'll got a chuckle out of that one, I did!:D

I read a news article about text slang, and they gave examples of the ENTIRE message in slang. I didn't even understand the translated version. I'm petrified for the future generations and their lack of education.

Just because some type or text like that doesn't mean that they are uneducated. When it comes to texting it is a lot quicker than typing it out in full. Typing on the other hand doesn't really need to be abbreviated although sometimes if I'm in a rush ill abbreviate some words. The thing that is causing a lack of education is computers, specifically spell check. C

I wasn't making a connection between the abbreviated text situation and a lack of education. I suppose I should have made that a little more clear. That's my fault.

The previous coversations in this thread were talking about lack of education, and I was just adding my two-sense at the end of the news article I was speaking about.

LOL! It's really hard to convey sarcasm with text...Where's that dam sarcasm font when you need it???

I'm with WW....if you know how to use the English language properly, one should do so...If you don't...well, try to translate it into something close...sometimes it's a real challenge trying to figure out what some of these posts are asking for...and I just like doing the three periods thing....deal with it...I know it's wrong...LOL...;)

I can understanding folks using texting abbreviations when they are texting. I suppose that even some forum board posts are being made from a cell phone. Again, that makes sense to abbreviate. If you've ever tried to used those tiny keyboards, you know what a pain it is to type anything of any length. It's a mistake to equate texting language with lack of education.

That said, I'm sure some folks use that all the time regardless of where they are posting from. I'm like the original poster. If a post is in abbreviated jargon, I don't read it.

I'm old, less flexible, and have less patience for new things as time goes by. I'm sure the younger folks look at dudes like me and think, "who cares what that dinosaur thinks?" They better stay off my dang lawn though . . . :wtf:

I do my best with writing English, because I am Dutch.

On school about 30 years ago and I use a lot of English and German for my jobs. I have to write some languages because I work with a company, that has fabrics all over the world. Also in de US, China and almost in every country of the world.

When I make a mistake, I am sorry about that.

Maybe they think it's cool to talk like that... That's even worse. lol

I use a pencil to type with, because of issues with dexterity, but to use text short cut crap is nuts here. I hate to text though, freaking call me! To often the message gets lost in translation and if spelled out correct, it would had saved more time to understand the original message. Il be the first to say i cant spell, but i try, and use the spell check. So yeah i pretty much dont read to much slang, i really dont understand even the text stuff, i gotta text back and:wtf: which takes more time. Man i hate it. Abbreviate is different, we all have heard it some place and if not, its easily understood or i wouldn't use it. I want my message to get understood, not sure why some might want to target only a select few for help with their prize plant.

Texting as a written language may one day be a spoken language. Its like humanity is going in reverse or coming around to the beginning again. Slang is the language of the uneducated when used constantly. But what do I know because I don't have any need to text anyone an press three time to get the last letter in the key. Hell, if my phone rings, its someone who got through the do not call listing or rings once and no message!!! Phone ghost or something!! :S2:

When I graduated high school I got a scholarship that pays 75% of my tuition and a financial aid set up that gives me 2,000 a semester. With that and a job I'm almost making it. Fortunately my parents have quite a bit of money and can help me wherever I come up short so I don't have to take out loans. Just like anything else, the opportunity is out there. It is in no way the school's fault. If the kids want to learn they will, if not they won't. To blame anyone else but the person in question is a cop out. Furthermore, I don't write in text talk unless I'm sending a text message. When I am the only reason I write like that is for the purpose of short hand. On social networking sites or anywhere else on the internet I write like I was not raised by livestock. But it is not the school's fault. You have to work for what you want in this world. If you want to just give up and quit, then fine. If you want to stop learning (education will never stop for me, even after I graduate) then fine. But do not blame someone else for your choices.

If you're sending your kid to a top boarding school and you're going to buy their MBA via donations to the school's library then that I can completely understand. But unless you have money like that, private school is a waste of money. I went to a private elementary school and when I got out I had the same education as my high school peers. Theirs just did not cost 36,000 over nine years. There were kids from my elementary school who went to the next (private) high school school on the track of our (private) elementary school and my SAT scores were just as good as theirs were. My SAT scores HAD to be good for me to get me scholarship and I achieved that without a problem at a public high school.

Wish my daughter looked for help with college. To damn lazy, but as smart as most people i know. My ex, her mother is the same way, brainy. But dont take advantage of it, i just dont understand why a person would not want to expand their minds to the max. I give ya major props bro, life is about not always taking the easy way out and most kids dont think like this till its to late.

I ask my daughter what she liked best, a orange or banana? Her reply was ''well the banana is easier''FTW:wtf:. She is in college now and could do a lot, because she is so smart, but its all book smarts. I worry about this, i guess because i believe in paying attention to any and everything and you will learn things that will help you in your future. But hell, nothing:wtf:

Nah, just kidding. I agree its a bit annoying to see typed...tho sumtimes I almost cant seem to help it cuz i text so much, it just comes naturally for casual communications now.

Not saying I disagree that the overall education level of our future generations of kids is going down the toilet... tho its not like we havnt been in an age of anti-intellectualism since the 50's. This is what we get.

It's becoming more and more common for folks to surf the web on their super amazing miracle phones. I suppose it's easier for me to read text talk on a forum since I grew up with it. The older generation needs to keep up with the times, not the other way around. Instead of complaining about having to learn to decipher some extremely simple abbreviations, maybe one should marvel at the fact that they can communicate with these people at such great distance at all in such an amazingly short time. :)
