400W HPS - LA Confidential/Headband!

Hey everyone, picked up six clones from a local dispensary last week (12/2) and wanted to start up this grow log. This is my second grow (first grow is currently curing), but my first grow log. Im really excited about this grow log and all the help i could potentially get from you experts. :rasta: Here is all the pertinent info...

Light: 400W HPS
Location: Broken Sauna in garage, So Cal
Plants: 3xHeadband 3xLA Confidential
Soil: Fox Farms Ocean Forest
Nutrients: Fox Farms Grow Big for Veg, and Fox Farms Big Bloom for Flower
Temp: Day - around 75 degrees, night 55-60 degrees and humidity never gets above 30%
Others: Oscilating fan 24/7 on plants, 6" inline fan for light, 2.5 Gallon Lowes buckets (holes drilled in bottom for drainage) and 5 Gallon pots for transplant later, and a thermometer.

Ill post pics in my next post. For those that recognize that I already had a thread from last week, I apologize. I messed that up and decided to do another. I emailed the admins twice asking for them to delete it, and I have not gotten any response. :mad:

One question about the nutes. The FF feeding schedule that you are given when you buy their nutrients says to give the plants only Big Bloom for the first week of veg...but as I understand it, the Grow Big is meant for veg. Could anyone explain this? :wtf:

On this pic theres some clear yellowing, just wondering what that is? The clones came a bit yellow, but I expected it to be better by now. Does it just need some nutes?

On this pic you can see the yellowing as well, but the one in the back right is drooping a bit. I can feel very slight moisture very deep down so I wouldnt think it needs water. Im not sure.

Hey guys, update...it's day 9 of veg and the plants are between 9''-12.5''. The light is now 6'' away from the top of the tallest plant. Pretty happy, all the new growth is looking really green and healthy. Had a ventilation problem, but fixed the ducting. Oh and I turned up my oscilating fan from low to medium today, hopefully to make them stronger. Im guessing the yellowing might be nute burn...still not sure, maybe its just cuz the clones came that way.

from a growing aspect its kinda tough during the hotter seasons cuz the temp gets up there so easily in a sauna. right now it's perfect tho cuz its been in the 40s and 50s lately, but my temp stays at a nice 70-75 and holds heat during the night. im definitely enjoying it. :rastasmoke:

All 6 are looking very very healthy, and Im really happy with the grow so far. One of my headbands is looking a lot shorter than all the others, but if memory serves that was one of the clones I picked up that was significantly shorter to start.

The yellowing I was worried about earlier isnt a problem anymore. I am worried about a bit of stretching, but they seem to gradually be filling out nicely.

Hey guys, update. My girls have been veggin for 2 weeks exactly today and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Plants are 12"-16". All the LA Conf's are significantly taller than the headbands. "

Im gonna keep them in veg for two more weeks before i switch to 12/12 flowering. Everything is looking good imo, but still hoping for some input from the expert growers out there...

Should I transplant to 5 gallon pots today? I know theres a shock/stress factor when you transplant, and I figure I should do that a week or two before flowering. They are currently in 2.5 gallon buckets. Any input is appreciated! Also, if you see any danger of stretching please lmk, I had this issue with my first grow. Light is as close as possible and oscillating fan is keeping them strong, so I'm feeling confident, but once again all input is appreciated!

could some experienced growers give me some input? specifically on transplanting...also considering starting LST. Probably too late in veg to start, but my shorter headband is just under a foot tall so i may try with her only.

Im still considering transplanting and starting LST on my shortest headband. Im just going to do both today if theres no other opinions out there.

Other than that no real problems...clipped off 2-3 dead leaves from the bottom foliage today. May water, think I'll save that til tomorrow.

pics...Front row is LA Conf, Back is Headband. Except the middle two, they were switched for rotating purposes. Front middle is my shortest headband, kinda worried about it. Hasnt changed height for two days stuck at 12".

You should line the walls with mylar, it will help alot with speading the light;)

Might also tie the down with a lil LST or they are gonna stretch on yea. Looks like they already are. Any ways , looks good. Im not sure about the yellowing leaves though, sorry.

I definitely want to get mylar but im not too sure I know where it's sold. I heard some emergency blankets are lined with mylar and work equally as well, do you have an opinion on that?

And do you think I should do LST on all of them? Arent they all a bit too old and tall? I was gonna do it on my 12" headband cuz i felt it was still small enough, but Im not sure how all of that works Ive never done it before.

Oh, and not to overload you with questions...but when do you think I should transplant? I was considering doing it today cuz im switching it to flowering in less than two weeks.

Hey Gopher, sorry im late, but im pullin up a stool :stoned:

-The yellowing is almost always a sign of Nitrogen deficiency. However, since they came that way, im glad to read u didnt add anything, as ur soil probably had enough, and they were just recovering :thumbsup:

-I would say yes to transplanting into the bigger pots. If you let them dry up, the soil will stay more intact. Maybe wait until you usually are about to give your next watering to do so.

-As long as you are in veg, its ok the transplant and lst, as doing so in flower will really be the only time itl effect your bud amount.
-I would wait a couple days to a week after the transplant to begin LST.

- I would also recommend Lst since i dont see to many side branches, unles your going for the single cola, SOG style grow.
*Tie the top of your plant as far down to the soil as possible. This will tell Her that the side branches need to grow and compensate for a missing main top.
*If the stem is hard, you can slowly work the top down over several days. Be sure to easily work the point of bend 'back and forth, back and forth' first, to prevent it from snapping.

-Wait a week after all is said and done, or signs of new growth before flipping to 12/12

-If mylar is hard to find/expensive, Just paint all walls a Flat White Paint. This is what i use and works fine.

Im going to transplant them into 5 gallon buckets today! Pretty excited to watch em shoot up with this fresh dirt they get to munch on! :D I'll give them about a week to recover from the stress and then ill start LST. Maybe sooner depending on how they react.

Yes, i do have quite a few holes in the buckets for drainage. Towels absorb it all.

MadSativa: The more I see people top their plants the more uneasy I get about it. Just the idea of cutting a plant up scares me haha. Is it really worth it?

Im glad to help. Im nooopro but I do have 1 hell os a green thumb. Every plant of any nature does good if not great so I have fallen in love with growing. The price of thisshit is what slows me down, but yea gotta start some where:wtf:

I LST every day, as one would do with a scrog. The reason I dont do A scrog is I like to rotate my plants and pull them out to mess with. You cant do that with a screen in place so I did like what I did. Check it out on my log. Look close and you will see that I used hanger chain around my pots so I have unlimited tie down spots. Works great.

Just remember 1 thing....Its a weed,.itll grow through just about anything so dont over think it. Youll learn as you go and ever batch will get better

Transplanted all 6 girls into 5 gallon pots yesterday. They were DEFINITELY root bound, the roots were piled up at the bottom of the 2.5 gallon buckets so they should be thrilled to get into their new space. It has been almost 24 hours since they were transplanted and they seem pretty recovered. Two of them were significantly stressed after the transplant, but this morning they looked nice and healthy.

Still considering if I should do LST less than 24 hours after transplant, I definitely want to start! What do you guys think?

Depending on input Im probably going to start LST today, as of now...planning it for today.

Oh, I also raised my fan so it was as tall as my girls are. Thanks guys!!

you will get more bud, toping is a practice, where you top the main branch or steam, and this forces the 2 internodes to branch off as well, what this means is when you flower, you will not have just one cola but 2 or 3 or 20. a little trick alot of people do is top at the 5th or 6th inter node, and you will get 4 massive colas instead of just one. this and good cannopee managment is what will yeild more buds. lolly popping when their ready to flower will also help, choping and pruning is all part of growing, if its your first time, then try with just one at the 5th or 6th node, let them veg for at least another week to get those new branches a time to set in (grow out, you want those new branches to be out at least 2 inches from when you toped) then flower them, I bet the topped one gets more than the non toped. even with the week or week and a half stunded growth.

toping is just taking the new groth off so no choping at the main branch, doin this stunts for like a week and a half minimum, dont wana waste time on waiting when it could b growing or flowering.

If you do start today, id say go light. And For the ones that took the transplant a little hard, try to wait till tomorrow. But if they look to be recovered and have new growth, go for it.

I dont think youll get more bud by topping, just less branches with bigger buds. (ie. fewer branches with bigger buds, but equal to more branches with mid sized buds)

Lst and topping are relatively the same concept (promoting side growth), but lst will have a lot quicker of a recovery time.

I LST'd my smallest headband which was about 13"...the rest of my non LST'd plants are about 18"-19". I am taking some pics so tell me how I'm doing or if I need to change anything.

The plant may pull that duct tape loose over some weeks. if you drill a bunch of screws around the pot, you could tie branches to em and theyll hold firm.

curling leaf edges is usually from heat stress. How hot is it in there?

It's definitely not heat stress. Most of the time it's between 65-75 degrees, tops at 80 or 85. It's so cal in december so it's prime weather IMO.

Im not sure what the cause of the curling is....:(

oooo space is that much of a factor? ususaly lst starts closer to when your gonna flower, I have seen this before though, but the foilage so close to the soil invites pests and fungus. if this is nessesary, some sand on top of the soil might keep all that away.

I meant a week and a half maximum, topping if done right wont stunt growth at all. Or very little less than a day.

Space? I have a decent amount of leftover space...not a huge deal since Im not going more than 6 plants. What do you mean by that?

Im switching to flowering in about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks...so I felt like this would be a good time to start LST and filling out the pot. Am i wrong?

If I used a CFL setup for veg would it reduce stretching? Ive been comparing my plants to Stomper's grow of LA Conf and his are much bushier with a CFL setup. Maybe I should top them?

Oh and considering the flowering could double or triple these babies in size, should I consider flowering sooner than 2 weeks?

Hey guys, today I LST'd all of my girls and I'm pretty happy with the results so far. Makes the canopy MUCH easier to manage, and I can easily see some huge buds coming out of it.

Im still having that leaf problem Im not sure what the cause is, maybe the light is too close? Light stress possibly? My theory is still that it is from the stress of the transplant.

I dont think the tape will stay very long abd the plant will pop right back up.

The leaf curl is heat or light stress, raise your lights and see if it goes away.

If the duct tape does come loose that is exactly what Im going to do. I didnt want to take the time to do it today cuz the LST setup took me long enough. If I have to I will though! :thumbsup:

Most ppl lst thru the whole veg stage.. only needs 3-4 nodes to be safe for starting lst. Its when you're a week from flower that you want to stop stressing her out.

BUT, as long as you're veg'ing, just give 5 days to a week from your last lst before flipping.
Then when the side branching starts taking off, start lst again since they will want to triple in size.

I use 4 26W CFLs for veg and they get pretty big.

The duct tape can come loose, but most importantly the fishing line can and will cut into your stems! I use cotton Yarn for LST, tho any other kind of light weight rope like nylon shoelace or something would be fine.


As for the stress, HPS isn't a vege light for MMJ. Try putting a Metal Halide over them, it'll work better for vege. ;) Then switch back to the HPS for flowering.

If that doesn't help,.... well I'm out of ideas that haven't already been thrown out there :(



As for the bondage and flipping the lights to 12/12, I LST my girls and start them spiraling around the pot, (Typically I get a "U" shape out of the main stem) I try to train the branches "Out" of the middle. Then when I go to flower EVERYTHING gets trained down even lower under a Screen! (I'll drop the canopy about 3-4") Then it's training the stretch from day 1 flower under the screen for SCROG style grow.

Once the stretch is over and I start getting bud formation I let the cola's go UP! :rastasmoke:

So far every strain that I've tried this with has loved me for it.

The only exception was my Grand Daddy Purple,... which was a hermi from the get go, so I don't think any of the training had anything to do with it. :mad:

Ya, my next grow im going to start lst MUCH earlier. I'll make sure to give them ample time to rest before I flip to flowering.

Im also considering using just CFL's for my veg stage next grow, still have to ponder it. Not that im unhappy with HPS in veg, just pondering if I should try something differently or not. Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated sir! :D

I didnt veg the La under CFLs I did it under my 400MH. The ones under the cfls are white widow from seed. I got the clone La and it was already a teen about 12 inches tall, nice and bushy already:thumbsup: about a week and watch um go.

Id leave your girls the way they are,flip the lights imn about a week and youll be fine;)

Get some mylar though as Im sure you dont wanna paint the walls in there:wtf: That fire . blankets you metion is better then the plain wood:rastasmoke:
