Brand new grow cab!!, lighting question.PICTURES INSIDE

As of now, I have a 120w LED for my vegging stage. I don't really want to use it for flowering so I was wondering what you guys think I should use for my flowering lighting. There are 2 fans(both 4 1/2"x 4 1/2"), one bringing air in and one bringing the air out and my house is usually about 70°. My options are either a small 150-250w HPS(not sure if the ventilation I have in my cab as of now is sufficient to keep the box cool enough but correct me if i'm wrong because I would love to use an HPS), CFL lighting, or floro tubes. And if you believe i should use CFL or floro tubes, please specify what kind of setup I should use and which lights I should buy for the best yield possible. Thanks:thumbsup:

I couldn't help with the HID lighting Q's as I haven't used one yet but the flouros could do ya some good, HID would be better if heat was controlled.

Im currently using fluoros and had CFL's running too before scrog. I'm having pretty good luck with my girls now and a couple clones are coming in nicely after a few weeks in veg under fluoros. The other two are a month into flower and their producing more than I expected but not near as much as I've seen from peeps using HID.

Thinking bout the heat my bulb put out into my growbox I'd say fluoros would deff be a smart move heat wise, without upping your ventilation. IMO using HID would prob be fine if you moved the bottom fan up top, flipped it to exhaust and just used the bottom hole as a passive intake. That would move a bit more air.

Im using Philips T8 4' tubes. Veg @ 6500k and flower @ 2700k. T5s are better but cost a good diff more than a T8 fixture. I have two double bulb 4' fixtures that I got for $13 each at wally world and the Philips tubes came from home depot, they ran $30 total for four veg bulbs, then another $30 for the four flowering bulbs. The CFLs I got at HD too, they cost about $10 for a four pack.

EDIT: If I had that box and light I'd run some 2' fluoros up the sides and use those and the LED come flowering.

At least one up each side and two up the back. You'd hafta rotate the plants too, every day would prob be best. And, if I had the funds and it was feasible I'd prob run one up the back of each door two. The more the merrier.

Sounds like a good idea, now my only problem with that would be having several wires running around my box would there be a way to have all the floros connected to 1 wire, because i only have a small hole that can fit maybe 2-3 wires coming out of the back

In that size box, assuming your pots would be about a foot tall, you'll probably want to veg to under a foot then flower. That 120w panel would do just fine in that space, you're working in an area about half the size of my NFT setup.

If you do wish to add light, I would suggest you obtain 4 of those single-strip Hydrofarm T5HO lights, where you can daisy-chain them from a single power cord and run them inline, and light up all four corners.

That would provide a lot better light that T8s.

Much better light than T8, for sure. I use a single 24-28w one when I decide I want to take normal-light pictures of stuff.

I kinda wanna stay with Fluoros myself due to the energy usage of HIDs. What kinda heat do those T5's put out?

The 28w hydrofarm T5HO strip doesn't put out much heat. Probably comparable with my 50w LED panel due to the ends being hot electrodes and all.

You could always get a 250w hps with an air cooled hood. Make your own hole near the top of the cab to run the duct out. You would just need to purchase an inline fan to connect to it to cool the light/cab.


It is a very clean and nice growbox indeed.

Also if you went with the air cooled hood you would always be able to connect a carbon scrubber to it as well and control odor/cool the bulb/exhaust the cab on the same chain of duct.
