18/6 and 24 hour on and off?
Hey guys, im just curious if it would screw anything up or damage or whatever to my plant if i were to do 18/6 one day and then the next 2 days the 24 hour method and then after that back to 18/6 .....etc. and the reason i ask this is cause i want to do 24/7 but it would still be to much electricity for me to use even tho im using cool white t12 florescents, and want to get the most i can so i figured one day 18/6 and the 2 days 24.....thanx for reading and please get back to me soon fellow stoners^^

So im assuming everyone's reading this and going wtf, well all im asking is would it be bad to go from 24/7 schedge for just 2 days straight and then the 18/6 for one day and the the 24/7 the next 2 and so on and so fourth. PLEASE get back to me soon ive been on this schedge for the last 2 days!

Honestly IDK for sure if its gonna stress em or not...
I would stay well clear of any stress though, dont want hermies now do we?
But I am curious as to why you would do this, what are you trying to achieve?

well im trying to achieve not paying much on my energy bill, butt still trying to make my plants grow faster, so i figured 24 hours for 2 days, then 18/6 for 1......etc Ive been on this schedule for 2 days now. I just need to know if this might be a bad idea, and if im causing my plants to go screwy.

One of the things I've noticed in reading A LOT of cannabis grow books is that they mainly all say to put the lights on a timer. I assume that means it would behoove one to get the plants on a strict light schedule and keep it that way, no wishy-washy'ness.
I've never heard other wise but I think swapping the lights back and forth is gonna throw off some sort of balance.
Even some expert growers will change their lights from 18/6 to 12/12 by changing the time only one half hour less daily. So basically they go 18/6, 17.5/6.5, 17/7, and so on until they reach 12/12 in the hopes of it being an easier transition for the plant. This too would lead one to believe that keeping the light sched strict is best too.
Or, do what I did. For the first few weeks I had my plants on 20/4. That cut down on the light bill just a bit but keeping you at 20 hours of growing goodness a day :)

I'm starting to think that my Grandaddy Purp strain is sensitive to the sharp cut off from dark to light and light to dark.
Outdoors, the sunlight gradually fades in to full, the gradually fades out, takes about 1.5-2 hours, and the light cycle changes ever so slightly every day, taking me into 12-12,.... My INDOOR GDP hermed ever f'n time I tried it,.... Out door,... Nothin, Clean as a whistle.
Why? My guess is that my indoor lights are warmed up in about 3 minuets, and off in about 3 seconds, and the shift from 18-6 to 12-12 was only interrupted by 36 hours of utter blackness.
Works great for most strains, but that one's a picky bitch.

I dont remember where, but some cat in a forum said he supplements his HID light. A low watt CFL up high in the center of the area would come on 30 min before then go off when the HID came on. The light would come back on when the HID went off and stay on for 30 min longer. He flowered at 12/12 still though, so only 11 hours of HID a day.
I though about this option but said fukgettaboutit, dont want more wires and more timers...

Jackin around with the lights wont hurt them now near as much as it would during flower, you should be fine if you stick to a schedule :thumbsup:

I've played with light times/timing quite a bit and here's what I have observed...24/7 can be a little expensive when using HID lighting, with CFL and Flouros, it makes very little difference in my electric bill at all no matter how much I run them, so I run them 24/7, this is for veggin. If you start at 24/7 and then work down on the light side half hourly or hourly until you get to 12/12, you just wasted a week or more imo, unless you've got a particularly sensitive strain. I grow AK47 and it doesn't seem to care much. If you go with 18/6 or 20/4 and switch for the duration of veggin, it doesn't matter...in veg mode the plants are generally more forgiving to light time changes. In flower mode they are not so forgiving, so get to 12/12 from whatever as fast as possible, I change bulbs and times overnight and go straight to 12/12 for two weeks to insure they get the message to flower and then go to 13/11 until done. I would not recommend noobs jumping, (and try to never go backwards!) around your light times during flowering, but in veg mode, it doesn't seem as critical...hope this helps!

In the interest of efficiency (or speed of growth, which we assume is as fast as possible), I would not be changing things back and forth too much. The less stress, the faster the success with MJ, as far as lighting goes and too much change, makes too much stress, slowing the whole thing down.
IMO, the time for experimenting with light times is not in the middle of a grow, but planned from the beginning. Pick a number and stick with it as much as possible throughout the grow...you'll only slow things down changing things up in the middle of a cycle, (unless ADDING more lights) and you may not realize any significant saving on your electric bill either, and you may not be able to tell if what you change makes any difference or not, and then won't you feel silly because you did all these changes and you won't know whether you made any difference or not, or saved anything or not?
Personally I don't think you'll save more than a few cents between the two times you speak of with anything except high wattage HIDs (MH or HPS).

I claim nothing yet....this is the first time on that particular light schedule. We shall see and I will let everyone know if it made any difference or not. I read/spoke/saw a video (can't remember! LOL) somewhere that someone else uses this light schedule and gets somewhat bigger better buds, so I'm trying it out. I think he said he still does the two weeks of 12/12 to get it into flower mode, but it may be 13/11 throughout flowering. I am in day 26 of flowering, so it's too early to tell at this point, but I'm hoping for slightly bigger better myself! Some strains will not flower, or are very slow to flower on 13/11, so I have not tried the 13/11 on them yet...currently have AK47, and it seems to like it.

I see no reason not to, other than efficiency...you could do 21/3 or whatever, but if your going for maximum growth in the shortest time, why would you? If the plant can take 24/0 light for weeks at a time with no apparent ill effects and growth is proportionate to the additional light/time AND you're using little additional electricity...why not use it? You could maybe get them to veg with only 14 or 15 hours too, but why would you? Just conversing here...comments?

Dude i really appreciate the reply in all, but if i was going to use hps or metal halid or a GOOD cfl, then that would mean i could afford the elec bill now wouldn't it? witch is why i posted this in the first place cause i was concerned even about just using what i have already,.... all i can use is 4 t12 3120 lumens 4100kelvin .......its all i got.....all i can afford. Also ive researched just growing from start to finish using flouro tubes and turns out i can but! i wont get much yield but the buds will still be danky witch is totally fine with me,.... thanx anyways dude still..... i appreciate your effort to help^^

i understand what your saying now ,your so broke you have to stay with the light you already have .i apologize for upsetting you.:( i'v been there and feel the pain brother.my first indoor grow consisted of ten 8' t12's salvaged from a garbage pile and mounted on plywood.i had to sell most of the harvest to pay the overdue elc bill. may the fore wind blow something good your way.when/if you get a chance to upgrade may i point out that a four bulb t8 fixture will use LESS electricity than a four bulb t12 fixture while giving you more light?. :hippy:
