First Grow From Clone

Since my clones have now been moved from a DWC/Dome into soil its time to start a new thread for em. I mostly no longer consider them my first grow even though my first grow has yet to be harvested.

Since I've already potted these girls this is the quick run-down of the past two weeks or so. I started by selecting the stems I wanted to take as clones and clipped half of each fan leave off from the selected area. I waited 5 days for the leaves to heal a bit then clipped the clones, went strait into water for another diagonal cut, then a quick dip into root stim and into the DWC they went.

The clones spent 16 days in a DYI'er DWC and under a dome for 4 days. During this time I went 12/12 with my other plants and one that I cloned proved male. :( He was cut and the clones pulled. The plant the other clones came from showed pistols so they were potted into strait Fox Farms Ocean Forest, no additional mix, and then the first watering was using the water from the DWC res.

The clones have now been in soil for 24 hours and act like theyre lovin it so far. Since new growth was showing and I plan on using a scrogg for these girls in the future I went ahead and topped each. I will continue to top each again and again, trunk and stem, until they get a nice bushy flat canopy then they will be trained into scrogg for two weeks before 12/12. I'm not sure how long I will let them veg yet, atleast until the older plants are harvested, it kinda depends on the space in my veg drawer and how fast they produce the canopy I'm looking to get.

I guess I'm on the right track here.

If you've already topped, it's kinda mute,... but bend the main stalk off to the side and tie it down to train,... just doing this will induce accelerated growth in the branches, and bending the branches out to the side has the same effect. This is LST or Low Stress Training.

Topping is very stressful and slows new growth while the plant figures out what to do, over topping will create a canopy with too much vegetation in the center, and loose low quality buds when flowered, unless you prune out unwanted new growth.

My current SCROG was never topped, just trained. I'm going to start working some new girls for this here soon,.... well 2 weeks ago! ;)

Then despite the initial top already done Im going to trim these girls the same way I trimmed the fans on The Beast. Doing so really made the stems come out and try to get even with the top while the top was the only part that did not grow rapidly. However, when the side stems did reach the cut top it all started to grow at the same rate together.

You yourself said it would be perfect for scrogg.

When the sides did even with the top is when I was going to top again. After that, as soon as the second top showed more growth I was gonna move into its scrogg zone and let it go for a coupe weeks before flower.

Males grow differently than females!

A girl that grows like that would be amazing! :D

But, Understand that MJ is a wind pollenated plant.

So Males want to grow as many branches as they can and all those branches want to stretch for the sky.

Then they can throw lots of flowers out there, way up high and spread all over, for the wind to spread to the females.


I was hesitant to sex that plant in your first pix because it's really hard to tell at that stage,....

I in my heart knew it was male, but couldn't be certain. :( Maybe if we were 1700 miles closer I could have looked first hand and been able to say, but that's not the case.


You've topped your girls, nothing wrong with that,.....

What I see in the pic will require more light within the month. ;)

The clones? Yes. They were all under one CFL that was 12-15" away for the 16 days they were in the DWC, I stuck them under the T8's when I potted them into soil. Is this a problem?

And, I see your point on the male vs female growth patterns, it makes sense.

I got two girls that are close :D

Now remember, all my plants were not the same age. They were all planted at diff times and trimmed at diff times to. I would trim a bit on one and see how it reacted before trimming another and so on so I kinda got a lot of variables running loose here.

The best lookin plant is The Beast (the male) I recently cut. I started triming him first as the test then moved to A. A is the larger of the two fems and IDK if its lack of turning with only one sidelight close but one side is growing faster than the other, which is unlike B but B was in the center so it received equal side light. C is odd cause it was so short and stumpy that I forced it to stretch before triming the fans to produce the canopy I want.

At one time The Beast (male) looked like C (female) does now. And, A would have the canopy I wanted if not for the shorter stem reach on one side. I dont think that would be a scrogg issue anyhow though.

If C does grow like B did, and I think it will. The stems will all reach up and about time they become level with the top is when the topped section will start growing again. This should make for a nice canopy even though I wont scrogg these now. I think its too late for that.

Back to the clones now :D Its still very early on but they seem to love the soil :rastasmoke:

I think the crappy auto focus/brightness adjust on my cam makes the pics look like hell. Any time I get close w the cam the light in the pics looks all sickly yellow and dim. Its not really like that. The pic from far back shows what the light really looks like.

Plus, I did a few little mods with white foam board and I added a little fan.

I guess I'll just see what the next few days brings.

A1 is developing some brownish marks around the edges of the fans but seems to be fine other that that. I'll start to worry in a few more days, I think its just from the potting.

A2 is just doin its thang...

Nothing major, just pic updates.

I got a lot of time on my hand now days since I got laid off on Monday :( and my new/older (used to work there bout a year ago) job wont be available until another week :(

So...
Taking pics of the girls before and after watering, 26 hour time span, seemed like a great idea.

I also clipped two fans during this time span, JIC nobody notices LOL

There was nothing wrong with the fans you clipped, tho the quicker growth is kinda cool, it stresses the plant not in a good way.

The new branches are exploding because those big fans you clipped aren't there to provide food anymore so it's got to make new fans NOW!!!! The plant will pull nutes and hormones from anywhere it has to to make new growth and survive.

Just saying, if it's a potentially hermi prone strain, any little stress can kick that gene into action and make her go all Shemale on ya. Just some food for thought.

My figuring is this:
If it is a hermie prone strain the mother of these two would prob have hermie'd by now. Thats what I'm betting anyways.

I hoped but did not really think my first grow would be a success, but now I've got two fems pretty far into flower and two rooted and potted clones growing well.

Also, I watered and feed today to help add some backup for all the hard work the plant was gonna hafta do in the next two days. It's already used to the nute at the rate provided so I'm sure it'll eat it up and beg for more later.

Im sure plant A would have popped balls somewhere, considering all the stress, tweaks, changes, and fatal TLC, by now.

Im hoping that its not very hermie prone that way I can stress and shape, at an early age, to better suit my flowering arrangements and not cause as much stress during flowering when the plants are more prone to hermie from the stress in general anyways.

I know I'm taking a chance and I know I might pay a terrible price but the end result could very well be worth it :D

Just to make sure I understand you correctly...you took DWC-started clones and transplanted them into soil...right?

If you don't mind me asking, why start them in DWC and then move them to soil? Why not just leave them in the DWC, or start the clones in rockwool or peat plugs, then plant them in spoil when roots appear?

Just curious is all...I'm still learning the basics.

I don't mind at all.

I didn't want a DWC grow. I'm still green too and its easier and more forgiving than a hydro setup. I would have needed a ppm meter and a better pH meter plus hydro nutrients and all that brew ha-ha. I didn't want to deal with all of that considering this is only my second grow.

I didn't want to use rockwool or peat plugs either. I figured I'd have better success rates using a DWC so I gave it a shot. I tried to clone w/ soil at first and all but one clone made it, and it stayed stressed the whole time, ended up male too :(

I'm still learning too. But I can say that cloning with a DWC is way easier than using soil, IMO, cleaner too.

Here's the girls today.

They're growing diff than their mother did!

IDK if its better lights from the get-go, better soil, better temps, or just more exp now. Prob a combo of all of 'em.

Their leaves are shorter and fatter than the mothers.

These little girls make me proud every time I open the doors :D

In my little experiment here I'm actually surprised that they're doing this well.

I've topped each one of these five times already, all I'm gonna do to.

Hopefully they'll stem out like 8 mains, if they all make it, and would make an ideal plant for scrog then flower in another month or so.


How early should I start LST'ing these girls down if I wanna use this method to sorta get them prepared for scrog?

I sorta looking to end up with a super flat canopy on a plant that is only about 6-8 inches tall. In the end of flowering I'd like to be able to get a plant that basically stuffs a 16" by 25" area.

6" is pretty short. I suggest you aim for 10" - 12" of stem between the roots and the screen. First, it's just difficult to work the stem to that height. You would definitely need to start LST from the early stages. Second, you need space to work under the screen for watering and pruning. It's doable but much easier if you give yourself a bit more room. The rule of thumb is to veg the plant until it fills between 1/3 and 1/2 of your screen. Then flip to flower. Once you are familiar with how much your strain stretches during flower you can dial this in. Better to under fill the screen a little than over grow a lot!

Ya... Not long after the whole 6" comment I made a I began to question it myself. Start thinking 8"-10" at min would be better. And, damn good point on the watering space, I sorta have that prob now.

I cant really start scrogging them until they go into the flowering chamber. And I'm not sure how much longer the girls in there are going to take right now. It's common assumption that their Indica and they're at 27 days flower now so maybe in another few weeks they'll be done and the clones can get moved up and trained into the screen for a week or more before 12/12.
