what NOT to use when growing
Recently I've come across some posts were people have suggested various products to use, especially for problems encountered durring growing. Many of these reccomendations are just down right dangerous!
Rule of thumb; if the label says for ornamentals (house plants, flowers etc) or turf (your lawn) it should not be used on your mmj plants. MJ does flower, but you are going to smoke, vape or ingest those flowers.
ONLY use a product that clearly states on it's label it is safe for use on vegatables. And even then use some common sence about it's use.
All products are required by federal law to state on thier label what the product is intended for. Plus what the recommended dosage and application is for each spcefic plant. While most products will not list MJ, use tomatoes as a guide line.
If you have any doubts about a reccomendation, google the company and product, go to the site then look for the "label information" usually it's a pdf.
Don't look at the companies site, they may have a bunch of marketing hype, LOOK at the label, they can't BS on that.

Good point, OM. :thumbsup:
This is a medical cannabis site, first and foremost. Knowing that some of us med users are truly fighting for our lives, and many are on meds that come with interaction and side effect warnings...it is very important to know what you are putting into your meds via fertilizers and foliar sprays. You don't want to subvert the treatments you're getting for your medical issues.

Thank you Rusty :thumbsup:
I'm glad you posted right away, you just made my life easier to hit upon this.
On the subject of what NOT to use;
There is a bunch of additives, amendments, etc. that are being hawked as great to increase growth, flavor, etc, most of which fall into the useless and only going to cost you money catergory. Also some dubious growing ideas that are nothing more then old wive's tales.
You can save yourself much money and frustration if you check out RustyTrichome's older thread, "Wondering if a technique, product or idea is a fact or myth...?"
It's easy to find, look at Rusty's signature above and click on "Horticultural Myths and Folklore", it may surprise even experienced growers.

Good stuff there from Linda. The only two articles I read just now had to do with "teas". Back in the 70's I was a ag-extension Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya, and we used to "spread the gospel" of compost/manure and pesticide teas. We NEVER advocated folial application, though, as that's a very good way to introduce disease and parasites to the people who eat the foliage. Instead, we taught rural farmers to apply the tea to the base of the plant.
Her real criticism of teas is not that they don't work, but rather that they are inconsistently made, and that there is paucity of rigorous study of their effects. Those cautions should not discourage anyone from using teas in their personal grows. As always, educate yourself and don't burn out your plants. Teas should always be part of you master growing plan...not something you pour on while you are stoned and feeling the love for your plants. ;)
Thanks for the links! :)
PS - I should clarify that we never advocated applying folial sprays to the leaves of plants whose leaves would be consumed by people. Can they be applied to the leaves of, for instance, young corn plants? Sure, but not to your lettuce leaves.

Shameless bump, hope for more look sees. Plus had to add the exclamation point!
On the subject of teas, there has been a few questions about the use of tobacco tea as a pesticide. Usually comes up in outdoor or organic section.
Never ever use tobacco teas (or smoke tobacco products) around your plants. There is a disease called Tobacco Mosaic Virus, that infects obviously tobacco, but also mj.
12-15% of the tobacco crops in the Carolinas' are infected with it, in any given year. So it does wind up in tobacco products and could get to your plants via teas or even just smoke.

I'm on my second grow right now and, like everything I do, I'm always looking to critique my situation and find ways to improve. I love self-teaching!:)
Right now I'm in Kellogg's Organic and can't STAND it! First grow was in MG organic with MG nutes for both. This grow I used MG organic on two plants out of 6 just as a sort of failsafe. I would hate to be completely out of smoke and it frees me up to experiment with the others without fear of losing one.(Don't get me wrong, NEVER want to lose one!;))
Anyway, this is some good info. I've been using the general rule of making sure everything is safe for use on vegetables. Lots more reading to do too!
Wow, I'm medicated rambling..... Sub'd. And Thank You!

After growing White Widow and a few other 'white strains', for the last 5 years;
I find I need to add a pinch of epsom salt to every other gallon of water/nutes.
A little bit goes a long ways....:thumbsup:...mix/desolve well

Hey Dutch,
Maybe you would like to explain to the rest of the class why you use epsom salt. ;)

Damn! Woke up this morning, and my 2 month old 400 CMH bulb failed during the night...:wtf:..(the old one is 3 years old)
It has all the traits listed on this pdf. It NEVER did have ANY pre-burn (Getter Flash) look at the base, when new...and never did appear? Looks like I will be doing a 400HPS/400CMH side by side grow. 11 plants in veg, week #4.

Looking at the eye technology, using alternating red, blue bulbs with a T5 should produce the same result. Interesting bulb for those systems. :stoned:
