Males, Females, and early recognition
This question?.is it a male?..is it a female?..comes up so often that I thought that I??d try to consolidate information in one spot. This isn??t so much new information as I??ve seen a lot of this posted elsewhere?.just an attempt to ??bring it all together?.
The Genotype used here is a nostalgia strain called ??Gainesville Green?. It??s a hybrid and quite sativa dominate?..if in fact others experience different results with different strains then this is the place to show and tell.
We will always have new growers here (the teachers of tomorrow) so I??ll start off with the basics. A male nanners, anthers, or balls (technically a male calyx) and a female ??calyx?.
As we progress into early recognition I??ll probably just use the word ??nub? (for which I??ll probably take some heat) as theoretically it isn??t mature enough to be either one yet.
We??ll start off with a picture of balls (male). These are developed enough that there is no doubt as to their sex. I won??t be posting anything more developed here as I??ll be working to the less developed end of the spectrum. For new growers and experienced alike?..here??s a link sent to me by Weezard dedicated to pictures of males only. https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=130287 Just beautiful, thanks for the contribution Weeze. :D
The important thing for the beginner to study is the overall shape of the pod?.it??s fullness and it??s taper (or lack there of). Getting that feeling in mind will help us as we regress to the lesser developed ??nubs?.
Notice also that the nanners come in clusters and that this early on the calyx (calyces) stand alone. Later on when the calyx cluster?..that??d be your buds?.Bud!
For the beginner notice that both calyx and nanners both develop at the internode junctions.
[attachment=o257549]
And we??ll work our way backwards to some a little less obvious. They??re actually much harder to see with the naked eye?.thankfully the magnification of the camera shows the true character earlier on.
[attachment=o257550]
Higher up even the camera doesn??t magnify enough to be totally clear. But the clustering pretty much gives him away.
[attachment=o257551]
Now since I??m only allowed 5 pictures per post here??s a couple of females. They??re pretty young?.but that??s what suits our purpose. An early female doesn??t photograph all that well from straight on so here are a few profiles.
The first one young enough that only a single pistil is present.
[attachment=o257552]
Here??s another even younger?.it??s still so new and the pistil is so very fine that it doesn??t show up very well. But it is there even at such an early stage of development. This particular plant is only going to give us one calyx on this side. If you look through the crotch to the back side you can see the two pistils of a more developed calyx.
[attachment=o257553]
That should be enough so that the untrained eye can pick up the difference. So let??s move on to factors for early determination. We??ll talk about the females here and do the males in a following post as we??ll need more pictures.
The first thing to notice for the females is the conical shape of the calyx. Wide at the base where it grows right off the main stem, straight to a pointy end where the pistil emerges. The overall shape is the giveaway.
Also to notice is that the calyx attaches tight to the stem (it doesn??t stand off).
This particular plant was topped at the seventh node. The calyx develops here first?.and matures here first. It doesn??t take a lot of time for the calyx to throw a pistil. So all in all the female is the quicker to identify in it??s early stages.
I'll move on to part 2
HMR
-
Males, Females, and early recognition
The males are a little slower to develop. I??ll start with some pictures and work backwards to the earlier stages.
The thing to notice here (beyond the rather plump ball shape) is that the balls are going to want to stand off the main stalk on their own little stem. The female calyx grows tight to the main stalk but the males are going to want to eventually stand off.
[attachment=o257554]
Here??s one a little earlier. You??ll probably have to zoom in to see that the ball is away from the stalk on it??s own less developed stem.
[attachment=o257555]
And here in it??s infancy. The one on the left shows the ball forming and the narrowing coming off the main stalk. That??s where it will elongate it??s stem later on.
[attachment=o257556]
And another showing the ball and the ??stem to be? coming off the main stalk.
[attachment=o257557]
This plant was also topped at the seventh node. So this will be the spot to watch for the first indication.
WARNING?.do not expect the nub to mature here first?.while the plant will give you the first ??nub? here, look above for the first mature balls on higher or newer growth.
I hope that this serves the community for early recognition and to get the males out of the grow room as early as possible. If you??re still not sure remember that you have about ten days from the time that the males are quite obvious to remove them from the presence of ??Le Femme?.

Purpleroot,
Glad to be of help, that??s why I went to the trouble. And thanks for finally bumping this thread?.after about 250 reads it needed to get back to the top where the newer growers can find it. This question gets asked so often.
WW,
A nice compliment coming from someone who spends so much of their time and experience giving back to the community. Thanks for all you help?.even if sometimes they forget to say it themselves. :D

Hello HMR,
I'm glad this did get bumped up too :thumbsup:
Missed it initially, but you know how us newer growers are....slow on the uptake!
Excellent thread and great pictures, I think I may even be able to figure out which is male and which are female with this great reference. Keep up the good work.

"You must spread..."
It seems that no matter how much rep I give, I??m never allowed to give rep a second time to the same person. If I remember correctly Redtails has the same glitch going for him. Maybe a moderator will wander by with the ability to fix that.
I always try to show my appreciation for good work?.sometimes that means saying thank you in somebody??s album. Then of course there??s guys like Headshake with no album. I posted a very weak picture for an album just for the purpose of communication. (you listening Shake)? :D
I'd call it "sticky" quality.
That??s probably a good idea?..cuz I imagine the question is gonna be asked a time or two more.
Well Weeze the biggest comment has been the quality of the pictures?.Job well done. :thumbsup:

It??s pretty hard not to comment on the new avatar. It takes a lot of courage to post your picture here??it sure explains why you call me Sonnyboy. But then you probably call practically everyone Sonnyboy. (excluding Tonto of course).

Hey HMR, regardless of what you think and whatever Countryzard says, the new avatar was not meant to bait you. I've been thinking about changeing it for the last week or so. Then just the other day, a long time friend who has said I do look like Willie sent me that pic. With it was a note, "damn Mac you do look just like him...you could pass for his OLDER brother."

It does leave me confused as to who exactly I partied with in Vegas?..I suspect it was you because the guy I partied with sure could put away the weed!
I did a re-read of my initial post and I??d like to rephrase something.
WARNING?.do not expect the nub to mature here first?.while the plant will give you the first ??nub? here, look above for the first mature balls on higher or newer growth.
Let me change that to:

Males, Females, and early recognition
I think it is time I added my posting about early recognition as some folks are starting to experiment. Though it is here: http://boards.cannabis.com/advanced-...ml#post2068667 I will just quote the text here to keep folks in this thread.
I will also add before I do this, that I now am starting to look at the seed itself before planting. I look for a perfect circle at the end that was at the stalk. So far, every perfect circle seed I have planted in the last year has been a female.
That being said:
Quote:
I am sure I will hear about this. I have do documentation to prove this other than my observances over the last 1.5 decades.
I believe in it enough I took a plant that had not shown and put it in the flower room. Did that exactly 7 days ago. Today it showed.
I have a theory. I did identify this as a female on day one of germination. My only proof is a friend, and my word. You don't wanna believe, then so be it, don't be nasty. I am posting in advanced so I don't mess with newbies heads. Chripes they worry too much for this old fart.
So, my theory is:
If a seedling comes out of the soil and there is dark red streaking or dark red stem watch this closely for signs of being a female.
Additional signs are red streaks in the main stem. Red 'dots' on the petioles. NO red in the leave veins (which is a deficiency). The petioles may even have red streaking.
I germinated 3 of the same species, one showed today, another I killed today because of poor phenotropism, and the last one is still in veg and not showing. I believe that one is a female too, but it is growing quite differently from it's sibling.
Conversely, Male seedlings are green stalk. No red in the petioles, they also are green. They grow faster, taller, leaner and using those criteria, I have not been wrong yet.
Maybe this is just a fluke. But someone or something I read somewhere a long time ago in a land far, far away....(back to life now) I heard this. I did not believe it. I think I do now.
There are additional little indicators, like the parts I call the spurs. They seem to look more like crossed swords early in life whereas in males they just look like pointy things sticking up.
I know I came outta no where. I do try hard to document and have references for what I state. This time it is just experience.
Are there people that agree with me? I am sure we have dissidents. Like I say I cannot prove this, but golly gee, if I am risking $300 seeds and just throwing them in a flower room, I sorta believe in what I am doing, I am not a risk taker.
Now I have had one instance of the red not showing. It was recent. I picked a 'female' seed by the criteria stated, and it is almost done flowering at this writing. So, it seems the butt end of the seed may be even more accurate. This plant has never shown any of the red at all throughout it's life.

Many have seen in my grow log that I am attempting to prove this theory. I have attempted to label the sex of 4 seedlings at day 6 using Washougal's criteria. This has resulted in 2 hard ID's with one plant clearly indicating male and one clearly female with a solid red main stalk. The other two are not so clear, but I have noticed something and wonder if others can confirm this from pictures of their early plants. In all but the big fast growing green one that we think is male, the main stalk between the first true leaves and the first internode is clearly red (day 16). Is this a true indicator? Time will tell.

I have also been testing your early sexing technique and from what I have observed, they have showed signs of being female from as early as day 4. Next, I'll have to test your perfect circle on seeds theory. Why do your posts make me get all "Bill Nye"? haha :detective1:

while i laid in hospital this thread went from pics of nice normal pre-flowers to red streaks on seedlings and prefect circles on seeds :wtf: i'm finding it impossible to resist the urge to sprout a few dozen seeds to test these theories ....da*n internet...,must look at every seed with mag glass , record round or not , label seed ,look at each sprout ,record red streak or not.....THANKS....THANKS ALOT......so much paper work ahead:( .....or maybe hobble on back to bed and let the young folks take care of it ......damn pharms are kicking in...fuck it...call me later baby.

Males, Females, and early recognition
For what it's worth, I noted the shape of the seed's li'l 'ole when planting 2 horseflowers.
One was quite round, one was oval.
The oval became a male with a touch of purple on a few fanleaf stems, but none on the main stalk.
And the round 'ole seed jus' popped pistils but has the exact same coloration, or lack of same.
Looks like dis;
First, da kane. (male)
[attachment=o261900]
Den, da Wahine
Shorter, fatter, but same coloration, yah?;
[attachment=o261901]
"There are additional little indicators, like the parts I call the spurs. They seem to look more like crossed swords early in life whereas in males they just look like pointy things sticking up."
I'm thinking that the "crossed swords" thingie is more dependent on the diameter of the stem, which is in turn, affected by the speed of growth.
Males generally grow a li'l faster.
Faster growth will "skinny up" the stalk and cause the spurs to cross.
So, in a way, it is an indicator.:cool:
Aloha,

Males, Females, and early recognition
Since this thread was to get the newer members a place to start?..I??d love to continue on with earlier and earlier methods.
For the newer viewers that don??t know what Washougal and the WeeZard were referring to about identification from viewing the seed?.here??s a link with pictures to bring you up to speed.
http://boards.cannabis.com/advanced-...-sex-seed.html
That??s certainly better than my awkward attempt to describe it.
I only have a magnifier?.but I don??t have a camera to share that kind of magnification, so if any EyeClops users have the interest to post a picture or two?..I??m not willing to spring the $100+ for the BioniCam just now. I might have to wait until I pull another?..I mean have another job!
Weeze, I??ll go back and look again?.but from memory the 27 yr old ??horseflowers? seed almost never seemed to have a round pocket at the butt, while the 2010 horseflowers seed appeared across the board much more symmetrically round.
The last few seed that I popped were supposed to be femmed?..one turned out male. I really should have looked?.oh well, I will next time.
Washougal??backtrack back up to my second post and then down to the third picture. That bad boy has some very red petioles?..while the girls(pics 4 and 5) in the first post aren??t nearly as red?..tell me what you think (they are the same genotype). I??m not totally sure that I get it.
You know?.we could post a few seed butt pictures?.take bets on M or F. Who knows?this could turn out to be a good little money maker. :D
Still plenty to learn,

Horse, WW had referred to his early sexing of seeds in post #20 in this thread."I will also add before I do this, that I now am starting to look at the seed itself before planting. I look for a perfect circle at the end that was at the stalk. So far, every perfect circle seed I have planted in the last year has been a female."
So far his early sexing id of early growth plants has been right on the money. There are still a few weeks left in my experiment to be sure his techinique is on the money with my gals although, from my personal experience, I am predicting that WW is on the right path to early id'ing of plants. If this if proven to be fact I will have a lot less termoil waiting to see if my plants are going to yield me something special or going to be a genetic experiment for a later date.
Needless to say, I am hoping that this "new" techinque is something we can all call upon in the future ... is anybody as excited as I am or am I just freaking :stoned: out of my mind?!?

Hey Ya'll,
I find the seed shape indicator and stem color indicator, for sex ID to be very fasinating. But it is important to be able to sex the plant the "old fashioned" way, just like Horsemanrocks' pictures at the beginning of this thread shows.
You are going to see a bunch of newbies in the comming months with questions like....."I know it's a female plant 'cause I used a round bottom seed but the plant won't make flowers..." you all know what I mean.:D
The old fashioned way has not failed me, and when I want a surefire method of having female seeds....I make them.;)

I gotta great story for ya and HMR and whoever. I fired up the old still last week, somebody with a bar/resturant asked me to produce a few jugs for New Years. Since Christmas afternoon we've been doing homemade eggnog with it, great stuff. BTW for the last few days we've been snowmobiling....you can't do that in HI!:D

haha, I hear you so loud and clear, G! I guess most growers only care about the yield (kill those males!) versus the possibilities those male genetics can bring to the party down the line... botany is awesome but I'm a nerd in that way even with my dancy tangerines! :cool: (a little history lesson for those whom don't want one in the first place: This variety of tangerine originated in 1867 from a seed of a Moragne tangerine in the groves of Colonel F. L. Dancy.)
