Searching for a method to add silica to
my grow.....Right now I have at least a few plants after transplanting from clone to 1 gal then to 3 gal that die....everyone of them die from some type of stem problem....seems like the area is right where the stem enters the soil there is a problem...starts to dry out and boom dies....I was thinking that maybe if silica was added....it would get that stalk nice and thick and strong, most of those problems would go away...
Just a thought....
Anyone have any thoughts?

I use Pro-Silicate made by Grotek. It's suppose to be good for hydro and soil.

You can also use the little silica beads that say do not eat on them that come with beef jerky

yup to many variables,
unless we know what type soil,
when are you watering,
are you being careful not to damage root systems,
how much are you spreading root system when replanting,
what kind of light are you using,
do you have a fan on before from seedling to point of transplant,

It was the strain....poor strain clones...all of them were the same Grand Daddy Purple....got 18 clones 2 months ago....only about 6 are any good. two are flowering right now and the other 4 are 36" high and still vegging....looked in up the grow bible....and found the problem.....I still want to add Silica to my vegging plants right after I move them from the cloning machine to the 1 gallon pots...and I believe it will help the stock....I use can mag for the roots and I use Pro-mix soil with worm castings.

My first run was GDP, if nothing else it was hardy! Hermie too
Even my weakest clones of ANY strain have suffered very little transplant shock. So I'm a bit perplexed why it would be the up pot from 1 - 3 gallon that F'd em up.

...check the drainage on your 3ga containers. I had a couple of my earlier plants suffer immense shock from being overwatered after transplant into 4ga pails from 3ga grow bags. Needed to add more drainage. Mehupe.
They had some weird intense buds, tho, despite being killed off accidentally 1mo prior to harvest :/
Have added silica via some of the soil I've mixed in to some recent transplants, and the stalk gets insanely hard, imho. :) The plants seem to like it, tho...

you can use pulverized diatomacious earth if you wanna keep it organic. All you have to do is sprinkle a layer on top of the soil.
It also acts as an insecticide against crawling insects as well.

I'm gonna try the DE on my next grow!...
The strains I grow all have weak stems & are top heavy.....I have to tie them up or lean them against the wall...:wtf:

i am sad that you must suffer so much.....i know of a KANSAS landrace that grows little buds on a giant stem ....might solve ur problem.

to dutch,do you think that the plants are growing to fast, the clones i mean?im doing studies on mine trying to find out what causes that.
to the op,are you letting your clones get root bound before transplanting?i use to have that problem when i first started cloning.i was so happy to see roots i want to plant before they died.try it again and start with a little more roots at first transplant, then let it get root bound before transplanting again.when i do this now the plants seem to explode when its starts to flower and you have done that last transplant.something you should look into.

actually, I think the weak stems is due to a short 30 day veg time?...the thought of vegging males...gives me nightmares...:)
I do standard Nirvana seeds...I pay my money...I take my chances...I can live with 55% female....and all those good genetics...

First, I do not understand why the silica? Drainage? If drainage why not more perlite?
I would like to know how to enlarge and strengthen stems with a short veg time. I keep a fan on them, but they just get so big, and not big enough to support the main top.....Ya I know, bummer of a problem:jointsmile:

have you tried pinching the stems as the plant grows?

he wants to feed silica cause its what strenghtens the stem.i think

not to be taken seriously .....DO NOT introduce Kansas ditchweed genetics to ur plants.bamboo stakes have worked will for me but i grow in PROMIX.as for silica....at mid=flowering my nute level is strong enough to lower my PH to much so i add some potassium silicate to raise it....it does seem to thicken the stem but some verities still need staking ..

Try pro-tekt from dyna gro. I talked to one of there sales reps on the phone awhile back. He recommended it especially for pro-mix growers. Plants grow thicker sturdier stems, increased drought and heat resistance, and helps with stress. He sent me a bottle, and I must say it does wonders. Just a few things thou.....always add any silica additives to your resivorer first. Other wise the silica will bind with any Cal in the Res and will turn it a milky white color. Also, once you start using continue every feeding because silica is non mobile and will not move through the plant once use is stopped
