Newbie first time use questions - Iolite
Hi, let me start by saying I have never smoked anything so when I say I'm new, I'm really new to marijuana completely. I just bought an Iolite because a friend with MS said a vaporizer was the best way to go and it was the most I could afford. First off I'm wondering how much do I put in the bowl the first time, if I'm planning on starting off slow and only taking a couple of hits? Also, if there is extra after I take a couple of hits still in the bowl, what do I do with it? Can it be used again later, or should I bake it in a brownie or something? My plan was just to take maybe two hits the first day and then maybe three the next day until I know how much works for me. Would this be a good plan? Any other advice you can give would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

First off, Vap's are awesome!!! So good choice there. That being said, a little medicine will go a long ways in a vap, depending on a few things. How high you set your temp and how dry your herb is. And yes you can use the left overs for cooking, or other extraction methods.
Also, smoking from a vap is very different from other methods. First of all draw slow, you may see a slight white smoke but it should be nearly clear. You will taste it when you exhale. I should be a sweet kind of herb smell.

If you have bud, start with about the amount of an eraser of a #2 pencil. Take about 5 to 10 puffs. You may want a buddy there if it's your first time. Different weed has different effects. Sometimes people get paranoid or scared their first time. Try a different type of weed if that's the case.

Good advice. Vapes are awesome. Eventually, I plan on a Volcano, but I'm curious about the portability of the Iolite.

--Just start off with a small amount and work your way up to a comfortable level for yourself. Everybody has a different tolerance depending on many factors.
--Once the herb turns a chocolate looking brown you can save it for cooking.
I got my iolite about a month ago.
It has a fixed temperature so you can not vary the temp.
A couple of things I have learned:
--It uses gas quickly so I now fill it after every use
--After I fill it I wait about 15 minutes or so before I try to start it up.
--When you turn it on you will hear the gas hissing--I let it hiss for almost 15 seconds before I hit the igniter. If it does not start--you can see a yellow light to confirm it is heating up--just try again.
--I push the igniter very slowly and then hold it it. This always works for me.
--After you turn it off it will continue to hiss and produce vapor as it cools down so keep that in mind as you will lose valuable vapor.
--I take maybe 3 or 4 inhales and then shut it off since I will continuing to take in vapor.
Again, you need to customize the amount, # of hits etc etc to suit your own tastes and needs.

It's about the size of a cell phone but a little lighter. There is a straw thing sticking out. I think most people would think it's a cell phone. Obviously the more colorful design, the more likely you are to draw attention to yourself.

I engineered a soft drink cup into a portable vape so I can enjoy my hobby while shopping or whatever.
My iolite sits in the cup propped up and cushioned. I have an extension that comes out of the cover that looks like a straw.
This way I can walk around vaping away and it looks like I am sucking up some diet pepsi.

I love this! It's like the new type of "undercover joint" you know... the hollowed out ciggie filled back up with green.
Brilliant!

Yeah it is very stealthy. No odor just a hint of burned cotton candy or pop corn as per my wife who is not a hobbyist as I am.
Only thing is the iolite has a thermostat which keeps your stuff at a constant 190C--so every once in a while it fires up which makes a whooshing or hissing sound.
If I am walking around Walmart or Shoprite the surrounding noises cover up the sound of the iolite with ease.
Once I was waiting in Jiffy Lube for my car to be ready busily sipping away when it fired up but the customer waiting area was so quiet with 2 other people so I just went into the bathroom and turned it off.
I am looking to re engineer my device to muffle the sound which is not loud at all but could raise eyebrows in quiet places like libraries etc.

word!
I did a shyte-load of research on vap's after watching "Super High Me" (with Doug Benson, the comedian. If you have not seen it, I HIGHLY suggest blazin' one to it - funny ish! As impressed with the Volcano that I was, you'll eventually end up replacing moving parts (bags, mouth pieces, etc.) ...in similar fashion to the aforementioned Iolite (I like the soft drink cover idea, awesome concept... us stoners are good at that, lol) I read reviews regarding issues of the fold out mouth-piece and it not being the "best built". The iolite is portable though - it's certainly good for traveling and vap'ing. Once you get the funds, I'd suggest looking into additional "based" systems - there are TONS to choose from! I personally have the Silver Surfer. They're built here in Colorado... so I got the opportunity to go down to the factory, meet the staff, and build my own vap (awesome experience, btw). It really has no moving parts, has a multitude of different uses, and if something does go wrong, it's under $25 to replace parts. I've had mine about 4 yeas now and haven't had any issues. I've also had friends not have "great experiences with digitaly adjusted heating elements (SSV is knob-adjusted) Either way ya go, I would definately suggest doing your research before you go dropping your $$$ on something you're not gonna be happy with in the next couple years.
Anyhow...sorry about the rant - that's what wake-n-bake does to an individual :) ...welcome to vaping!
paace,
db

Healthier than squandering your money on beer not that you won't find yourself doing that too. So far I'm quite happy with my Iolite and my Extreme Q. Going on seven or eight months or so without any problems with either.

This sounds like my kind of an idea! Can you give us directions?

I am up to v1.5 with my iolite-in-a-cup job.
I took a large sized soft drink cup and glued styrofoam packing peanuts to the sides and bottom of the cup to cradle my IO securely.
I had to splay open an assortment of straws to attach to the IO mouthpiece before I found the right fit as it needs to fit snugly.
I am trying different sound deadening techniques to quell the hissing sound so I can continue to vape while in a movie house.
The IO is quite the elegant solution.

First of all I strongly suggest you return the Iolite and get a Vapir No2. Don't worry if you can't do that--the Iolite works fine. But the Vapir is much easier to use, though not as inconspicuous.
As for the Iolite here are main things to consider. Don't overfill. You will have a hard time getting a good draw. I fill the bowl full, but I don't pack it...just loose fluff. Don't think you can get away without grinding the weed. You need to give it a good grind and have a nice, fluffy herb.
Give it a good warm up before you load the herb. I let it go a couple of minutes, then put in the preloaded bowl. Then let it go a minute, then take a vape.
Give it a rest between vapes. This isn't steady heat like electric. It runs on Butane and you have to give it time to regulate back to vaping temp.
Empty it hot. If you let it sit loaded the screen gets really gunked up and the draw becomes painfully slow. Key to happy Ioliting is keeping the system clean.
Again, for ease of draw and at home use I strongly recommend Vapir No2. It is faster and easier than Iolite for sure. But the "battery" is worthless, so I have to use it plugged in. For travel and low profile the Iolite is great.

I have an Iolite and I love it. It is so easy to use, plus I was able to find videos on youtube to visually "see" how it works.
If you are new to medicating with mmj, I would only fill the bowl at most halfway, perhaps as was suggested earlier have a buddy, and perhaps use a hybrid indica heavy strain (less likely to have a mental freak out as I have heard people have sometimes with sativas).
I let my Iolite heat up for about 45 seconds then I start inhaling from it.
I keep it going for about 10 minutes, then turn it off and let the last few heating times go through their cycle, still taking hits until it gets hard to inhale which I have always assumed means the vapors are gone.
I figure that the herb inside is going to lend out all of it's vapors, so I try to control the amount of what I take by the size of the bowl.
I have not used it in public only because my hubby says that he can smell a clear mmj smell when I use it. Perhaps I will get more brave the longer I have my iolite. :D
*Please realize that everything I wrote here is from my experience, not from a fact book

Thanks for the info - I suffer with fibromyalgia and am looking to start looking at using cannabis for pain relief so this info is brilliant!
