PurpleRoot's first grow log
Hey all,:wtf:
First time grower here, finally decided to give it a go. I have been very successfull in growing shrooms, have been doing it for approximately 7 yrs. I'm only in the begining stages of my grow life, still on the net 15-16 hrs a day learning, reading, watching, observing what others are doing/ have done.
As soon as one of my babies sprouted I was hooked, and actually got my other half to go along with me on this project (amazing!) I was initally worried about growing MJ but I'm to the point the risks are not as strong as the benifits.
Here is my standard questionaire:
.1) Type and wattage of lights. (MH, HPS, CFL's, tube fluorescents, LED's)
Right now, two 25W cool white CFL and two 65W Dual Spectrum CFL. I will be ordering a lighting system on Tuesday (payday) and I am willing to spend $300-$350 for a good lighting system. I??ve been doing a TON of research and the more I get into it the more I??m second guessing myself. I originally wanted to add a 400W HPS/MH- however, my grow room is small and I am worried about heat/ventilation. So I was looking into LED??s, but got scared away when people were stating you need at least 1W per node set at no more the 120 degrees, you need to have the magic ratio number to make it work, etc etc. Then I??ve been reading up on CMH bulbs??? So I got to figure that out today?..
.2) Distance from tops?
2?-3?
.3) Reflector type? (cool tube set-up, bat wing, enclosed reflector, bare bulb...)
rounded parabolic reflectors
.4) Is there a consistent fresh air supply?
Room is 4x3x9, it??s a closet, door remains open during lights on, with a small fan.
.5) Do you have an exhaust fan and a circulation fan?
I have one fan that I have blowing around the plants, not on them.
.6) What are the bulb wattages, Kelvin ratings, and schedule?
Dual Spec??s are 4200 lumens per bulb (Total 8400 lumens), 65W each, 6500K and 3000K
Not too sure about the 25w cool whites, they were extra bulbs around the house, I had two extra sockets for them, so I figured the more light the better.
Your medium:
.7) Specific brand and type of soil, (coco, peat based soilless...) and anything you've added to it. (vermiculite, perlite, worm castings...)
This is my first grow, so I??m not going too scientific here, this grow is basically for a feel of things, by trail and error. I grow shrooms quiet well (I know fungus is a little more forgiving then a plant.) Now I have a total of 8 solo cups with soil, nothing added. MiracleGro Moisture Control Soil.
.8) Size of container.
Solo cup
.9) Did you use peat pucks (or similar) to root clones or germinate seedlings?
Germinated approximately 10 seeds, 8 planted, as of today 5 are sprouting. The seeds were placed in soil on 08/31/10
Your nutrients and water:
10) Source of water? (tap, bottled or filtered) What's it's ph before adjusting?
Tap, ph is around 7
11) Method of checking water ph. (ph pen, test strips, aquarium test kit...)
Aquarium test kit
12) Method of adjusting water ph. (phosphoric acid, white vinegar, hydrated lime, PH Up...)
Haven??t had to yet
13) Specific brand and N-P-K ratio for each bottle. List dosages (quantity per gallon) and current feeding schedule.
None, still babies?..
14) How often are you watering between feedings, and how much per watering?
I mist normally once a day, I have skipped a couple days because my cups felt heavy.
15) Any additives or tea's? (Superthrive, CalMag, molasses, Mother's Earth...)
No
16) Are your ph levels stable, or do they fluctuate?
As far as I know, they have been pretty stable when I have checked
17) What is your ingoing water's ph? ...your runoff ph?
I??ve actually never taken a ph reading from the runoff?. I??ll get on that??
18) Do you foliar feed? If so, with what, how often, and at what time do you spray?
no
Your grow room:
19) Indoors or outdoors?
Indoors
20) What size of closet, room or hut?
4x3x9, closet
21) What are the temps and humidity levels while lights are on? ...With lights off?
Temp 75-82 Hum 45-55%
22) Have you seen signs of insects in the grow room?
Well I actually did see a flying thing about a week ago, haven??t seen him since though, might have been a fruit fly?..
Your strain:
23) What strain are you growing? (Indica dominate or Sativa dom?)
Bagseed, it was decent stuff, certainly stuff I wouldn??t mind getting again. Before I dump $100 into seeds, I want to have a feel for my grow room, understand her! I wouldn??t be able to live with myself If I murdered my little girls after spending all that time and money?. I know its going to happen.....
24) From seeds or clones?
Seeds
25) Is this an autoflower strain?
Lol, no?..
As stated I planted on 08/31 I noticed one of my sprouts leaf turned up towards the light...... it did open flat, but then curled up.... theres four baby leaves on it. Also, in most pictures of sprouts, I observed that the stem seems to be a lot longer then any of my sprouts, as a matter of fact, three of the sprouts appear to be sprouting out of the ground with no stem?
Well this is it for now, I have pictures, of my little 1" plants, I'll post when I can. Thanks guys and gals, stay green!

it states it is for a 4x4 space, and i have 4x3. I plan on using this one light. Will it be good for all phases of growing? Would you suggest a regular hps/mh 400w?

go for the 400W or a 600W light. sure you might have to invest a bit more with cooling/exhaust etc, but that LED won't come close to comparing with the HID.

:wtf: .... DAY 7
I added more photos to my album. Do the plants look ok for day 7? Yesterday I observed flyin' asses coming from two of my babies soil. I removed the plant into a seperate area to try and prevent the spread of the bug to my other 6 plants. Also observed a cotton type whispy thing on one of my little leaves, after I removed it I believe it might have been the seeds shell.... dunno, I'll watch it.
I did not water my plants yesterday and turned my fan on to high, humidity was gettin up there 60%. (pics show my soil pretty good, its getting dry around the edges, but still moist near the plant) I also removed the plastic wrap I had on 'em and will probably keep it off now. Plants are still under the CFL, I really can't pull the trigger on a light that I can decide on.... I'm leaning towards HPS/MH 400w system, and purchasing a CMH bulb. (MasterColor Ceramic Metal Halide 400 Watt)
I broke down and spent the money on one of those online aero/hydro kits.... I know I know, build my own.... I actually priced it out, and I live out in the boondocks so going out and getting EVERYTHING I need would be a pain in the ass, and probably the same about of money on gas..... When I was at my walmart they didn't have a quarter of the stuff I needed.
My first babies are good bagseed (nice thick buddy nugs, hairs, crystals- probably a quality mid-grade) I am however on the prowl at seed banks for a nasty strain, I'm actually very intrigued by white widow from the dutchman.
Thats it for now, please check out my pics in my profile album, do my babies look ok? Do they look like they should for Day 7? I know it's still early, and I'm a n00b.... wish I could just speed the process of becoming a jedi-master at growin.... that would have been a good nickname: Darth Root!!! dam it! :D Ya I'm stoned, and apprently you ramble on and on when your typing too..... neat....

Thanks bro, thats actually what I'm going to go with while I start out, then may add LED as supplemental light, however that is sometime off as I want to get basic growing down first.

For flowering, I'm not sold on LED, but it has promise. None the less I'm using 400w HPS for flowering in a 53"x33"x 7.5' space. Can only cram 3 plants in there, but that's all I need at the moment.

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Lost one of the girls today. She sprouted, however, her leaves never fell open. Today when I was moving her, she plopped on the ground, it looks like her root had rot.
Temp: 80-84
Humidity: 34-40
Water pH: 5.75-6.00 adjusted to 6.75-7.0, I water almost everyother day, when the top of the soil gets dry and begins to crack
Light: two 85w dual spec lighting (one cool one warm) approximately 2-3 inches from the plants
Vent: Osc fan blowing into larger open room
Nutrients: none
I have added light prior to the last post and have observed more growth in the surviving plants. I WILL BE getting my 400w hps/mh tuesday. The seeds I'm using are from good bag seed, however is appearing to be difficult to get started. I've read a ton of logs and do not observe the same rate of growth as others are getting. I'm wondering if I would get better results from better seeds from a bank???
Also, I have set up my hydro system, and now am debating whether I should wait for special seeds or determine if the seeds are good and my soil growing tech is not.....
posted day 10 pics in my album!

Personally not a fan of MG soils, but they do work(ish). :?
Only problem I see with Hydro, if something goes wrong, it goes wrong for ALL your plants. But when it goes right it's more efficient than with soil.
Everything looks pretty much good, might have been slightly over watering, but I can't be sure. It's sometimes a bit shaky with seedlings. If I were you, I'd hold off on spending the $$$ for bank seed until you have your grow down. Then drop the green for Top shelf green :D

Day 14
Soil Grow
I started with 8 plants, am down to three going strong. 2 more appear to be on their way out. You can imagine my shock when I learned the soil I was using was 4 years old!!!! (I gave very specific orders to get soil from the store, however, my other half was telling her girlfriend who was like "oh hey, don't buy soil, I have a unopened bag!"..... ya 4 years old, with 5/8 DEAD!!!) So the three that are left will be transplanted into larger pots in a week or two if they keep up and don't die.
So I'm assuming that is the reason I had stunted/no growth.... grow room conditions are as followed:
Temp: 77-83
Humidity: 40-45
Water pH: 5.75-6.00 adjusted to 6.50-6.75
Light: two 85w dual spec lighting (one cool one warm) approximately 2-3 inches from the plants
Vent: Osc fan blowing into larger open room
Nutrients: none
Hydro
I just set up my hydro system. I had germinated 5 seeds using the paper towel method. Once the seeds broke open, I transplanted into pre-soaked/rinsed rockwool. Rockwell cubes were then placed back in the grow dome on heated mat. 24 hrs later transported rockwool to hydro chambers with hydroton, 12 hrs later 2/5 have sprout. (QUESTION: At first I thought the roots had come out of the rockwool, however, the "root" turned green. When plant popped out the stem had a crink in it with the "head/ two leaves" facing the ground, will they correct themselves?) Hydro resevoir has plain water (6.00 pH) Seedlings do not have direct light, but are in the grow room with indirect light. Once each plant has sprout and is approximately 1-2 inches tall I will begin 1/4 nutrients.
If you observe any mistakes or have any suggestions during any step of my log, please feel free to tell me. I'm always up to suggestions from those more experienced.
I have included pics of my hydro and soil babies. Happy growing.... or at least attempting!:wtf:

Soil Grow:
So the two I thought were going to die did in fact die... so I'm left with 3 seedlings/ plants (see pics in album) that are growing. Plants are just being watered at this point.
Grow room conditions:
Temp: 78-80
Hum: 48%
Light: 2 85w, 2-3" from plants, 18/6
ph: 6.5
nuts: none
Hydro Grow:
One of the six seedlings head got caught and ripped the head of the plant off... so I removed and have began germinating new seeds to replace. Two seedlings are doing good, approximately 3" with good leaf development. On one of the plants I observed that the first two leaves are pointing downward, the next two however are fine and appearing to be growing ok? Are the first two leaves supposed to turn down? I also added 1/4 nuts to my resevoir. Ph is 6.00. Hydro system is under the same light schedule as the soil grow.

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Plant ages:
The one soil plant that is doing really good with multipal levels of leaves sprouted on august 31, so it is 17 days old...
The two smaller soil plants together popped on 7th of September so they are 10 days old....
and last but not least the two hydros popped on 13th of September so they are 4 days old....
Two of the hydro plants have been sowed in the rockwool, however have not sprout yet. There are two open pots with no seeds/ plants in them. I have four seeds germinating, since 09/16/10 @ 7p, I plan on germinating the two strongest in rockwool then placing in my hydro. I know the plants are various days old, and I'm sure it will be a pain in the future with them being different ages, I am using bag seed and have been having problems with getting seeds to turn into seedlings/plants... I do like the practice though. I find that by going through this trail and error period has allowed me to gain some experience in growing. It allows me to diagnose a problem, then attempt to fix it, not always successfully! Each step is begining to fall in place as I find what works and what dosent!

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Sounds like your pretty much on the right track. Don't fret over the differing ages Unless your going to attempt a SeaOfGreen style flowering (you need the canopy to remain even for this style of flowering)
Personally I've got 2 separate areas, one 18/6, one 12/12, so I'm running a perpetual grow, and all my plants are separated by about 3 weeks. When I'm ready to harvest one, I have another that's ready to go into flower, then I take cuttings and start to root a clone for the new generation!
In an ideal perpetual grow, if growing just one strain, you'd have 8-12 plants in flowering (depending on bloom time) You could start a new plant every week,... and harvest one plant every week! :D
P.S.
As far as editing your post, it's only an option for the first 10 minuets after you post,... there's a little scissors icon next to the "Quote" "Quick Reply" icons in the bottom of the post.;)

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Soil:
3 plants, plants between 14-20 days old. The leaves on the larger plant are finally growing in pattern, and not random little/big leaves here and there, it actually looks like a plant now:thumbsup: Two of the plants have flyin stuff still, I tried a soap solution for a couple days, might have to do it for a bit longer. Goin to hydro store tomorrow will be looking for neem.
Temp: 79
Hum: 48
Light: 2 85w cfl, will be switching to mh/hps 400w when all plants get a little bigger
water ph: 6.5
* I've also been reading a lot about co2 and attempted to make a yeast/sugar generator with a soda bottle. I know there is ton of debate as to whether or not it is worth the time money or effort. I have a small grow, so it is easy to control. I'm actually testing two hydro plants, A + B. A will be treated with co2 by means of a soda bottle, tube, and plastic cup. The tub and bottle is connected to the plastic cup that acts as a dome over the plant. I will apply this dome for 4 hrs a day. B will be the control plant and will be allowed to grow as is. I'll report my findings and include photos.
Hydro:
Hydro plants are doing ok. Right now I have two growing strong, a seedling that just opened, a seedling with a stem and its seed totaly on the head with NO indication its coming off..... and two empty slots. I have two seeds germinating in rockwool at the moment. *IF* they take they will be introduced into the system. I'm finding I have more problems germinating in rockwool vs. soil. Lots of root rot, heads decaying off, etc... sloppy messes, so I'm guessing too much water so I've been restricting that and making sure I'm not going crazy. Over all grow is going better. I am interested in getting good seeds just to see if that at all makes a difference. Cause honestly I've probably been through about 30 or so seeds/seedlings with only 7 viable ...... for now..... plants, this is bag weed so I'm sure the genetics are not the best.
Any comments or suggestion are always welcome :)

PurpleRoot's first grow log
So I got my 400w mh/hps system today. I set the light approximately 14" from the top of the plants with my mh 38k lumes.
I also got my reem oil for my flying friends....
I decided to try foxfarm for my soil grow. I got ocean forest soil to transplant, and grow big, tiger bloom, and big bloom. I further bought the three "additional" products for their complete feeding program.
My hydro grow will be botanicare products (pro, karma, sweet, aqua, clearex).
I just dumped a good amount of $$$ on-top of the already $$$ I spent. Now if I can just figure out how to make it all work..... I'm starting to get majorly stressed, I feel like I keep forgetting stuff..... AND when one of my plants isn't doing good, I freak, I need to take a valium or something....
Two of my soil plants were underwatered I believe. I went to bed and they were fine, woke up and they were both on the ground!!!! so I watered and proped up with toothpicks, the stems can stand on their own now, however the leaves are still sagging.... <<<< are they gonners?
I am determined to make growing work! I'm worried about buying seeds online, though I wish I would. I have enough stuff to make a decent crop, now all I need to learn is how to do is do it! Hopefully not wasting all this money on bag seed for no reason..... but I guess I'll learn soon ;)
-
PurpleRoot's first grow log
Better to learn and F up on free bagseed than drop a few hundred on bank seed just to have em all die! ;)
Neem will kick the shiznit out of mites,... but your flying freinds? (Thrips?) It doesn't seem to have "Much" effect,... get some Fox Farm "Dont bug me" spray,.... it knocked all the thrips out of my indoor gardens (MMJ, and Garden Vege) in 2 applications!
-
PurpleRoot's first grow log
I agree get all of these learning curves out of the way with the bag seed, then spend the bucks on good genetics.
-
PurpleRoot's first grow log
ok so its been about 24 days since I germinated my first seed. Saddly, there are plants of different ages growing in my grow room. I have 12 spots in my grow, currently so far i have 7 plants with one germinating. If the last germination works he/she will be the last plant for this grow. Most of my plants are two weeks old, theyre about 3-4" with 2-8 leaves on them. I've looked at pics of plants two weeks old and theyre all larger then mine! So no one has answered in a month, do my plants look average for their stage of growth? I've seen mega-monsters in two weeks and I only have little babies still.....
SOIL:
plants are ok right now, started them on ff grow big and big bloom, according to their feeding schedule. One of my plants has tiny brown spots on them, I think it might be from misting the room and water droplets landed on them, there is NO brown spots on the new leaf growth.
HYDRO:
Have two plants doing great. I have 4 in germination phase. Today is a resevoir change...... joy......
SOIL PLANT PROBLEM:
I have flying bugs in two of my soil cups, I've treated with one application of neem oil and soap, theyre still flying around. I have done research into neem oil. It claims the oil makes the bugs "forget" to eat, drink, sleep, screw, etc. So the directions report to apply for about a week. I need to get rid of these bugs before I can introduce these plants into my main grow room..... pain in the ass.... apparently the soap is supposed to kill soft bodied creatures......

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Your plants do look like they have been stressed and are growing slow. This is why it is best to start with bagseed. Eventually you will find your rhythm, and learn alot along the way.
I do have a couple suggestions for your hydro setup though. First off those tubs are not light proof, if you were to hold the tub up to a light and look from the inside you will see this. Wrap the tub with some black duct tape or something else that will block all light out of the root zone/reservoir. This will help prevent algae growth and root rot. Second is get a water thermometer, and make sure the reservoir temp stays below 80F. (68F is ideal temp) Third is you want to get that rockwool down lower and completely covered up. Wet rockwool and direct light is a good recipe for algae growth. One last suggestion would be to start using Hygrozime in the reservoir, because you may already have some root rot. The Hygrozime worked awesome for me in getting rid of the dying roots and promoting healthy new growth. Also try to keep your hydro ph between 5.5-5.8.
Hope some of this helps you out.
Happy growing :smokin:

Plant B2 (Sprout date: 09/04/10) MG Soil, FF Big Bloom & FF Grow Big Nutes. (QUESTION: I did not use fert until my plants had a couple of sets of leaves, my plants grew slow so now my plant age and feeding schedule do not match. Is this ok, or should I feed the plant based on its age?)
http://boards.cannabis.com/members/p...day-27-002.jpg She has a little bit of brown spots and yellowing. I think it might have been when there was water on her leaves and she went under the 400w for the first time..... New growth appears ok.

D1, D2, + D3 sprouted on: 09/14-17/10; Plants appear to be growing ok. The color appears to be a little light. I have the same problem with my hydro. I'm unsure if I feed per plant age or length of feed.... as of now the resevoir has 1/4 nutes and is changed weekly. pH remains under 6., temps are 72-85, humidity 45%.

Soil:
Transplanted the larger of the three plants (26 days old) into a larger cermanic pot. Removed plant from solo cup while it was dry. Added a tee bit of superthrive by mist application then misted with water. (See pics in album). Plant seems like it is gaining growth. There are lower yellow leaves with black spots on them (See pics). I thought they were water spots burned by the light but I dunno.... :wtf: I noticed two new spots on "good" leaves today....
The other two plants (23 days old) are still in their solo cups, I think they will be ready to be transplanted next week.
All the soil plants are being fed foxfarm grow big/ big bloom 1/2 strength of the feeding schedule. I feed once, water with tap once. There is anywhere between 2-5 days between watering. ph 6.5.
Hydro:
Two of the littler plants (16 days old) that were not growing at all have started to show signs of new growth during the last couple of days. Two of the plants are still very questionable.... The two large ones keep growing daily! Their stems are getting firm and thick. I notice the color of the leaves of the hydro grow plants is a lot lighter then that of my soil grow.... The leaves also seem thinner... the soil leaves are darker green, firmer leaves.... the spots suck, but other then that.....
Did a res change added 1/4 nuts, 2 days later added another 1/4 nuts, will do another change on sat starting with normal strength micro/grow nutes.
Res ph is between 5.5-5.8
Grow room conditions:
Temp: 75-95 I've been having issues with my heat, I've been trying to keep ac off, not working out, so I have been leaving on now.... temps normally do not go over 85.
humidity: 45
light: 400w mh 14" 18/6

Soil grow:
Plant B2:
Woke up today and observed the center of the top leaves turning slightly yellow. Didn't look like nute burn, water issues, etc, so I checked ph run off. Water going in was 6.75, my ph strips go down to 5.0, the water coming out was lighter then my strip! So I flushed with 7.25-7.5 water four times. The last ph reading out was 5.5. After the flush I airated the soil with a chop stick by pokin holes in the soil and "fluffing" it up. Plant was then placed back in veg.
Any help/information/suggestions would be appreciated!

Soil:
B2
Because of the ph lockout, I believe my plant developed a boron defficiency. About a week ago I would get random black spots, thought it was from water/light burn. The center of some of my leaves turned a copper color from the center of the leaf outward. I checked a ton of pics and info, from what I can tell it is boron. No new bad growth, and she does appear to be growing, stugglin, but growing. She's just hangin in the ICU, I'm not doing anything to her for a couple days, oh, except I have been lightly foilare feeding to attempt to add some nutes while she drys out.
CPlants
Nothing new to report, ph runoff of them is also 5.75. I'm going to make my water and feed for my soil plants at about 7.3 because my water is apparently acidic. My water from the tap is 5.75. I used to adjust my water to 6.5-.7.
Hydro:
More problems..... so after res change on saturday I turned off my pump for the first time for a couple of hours. When I turned the pump back on my plants began to get the look that they were over watered and wilted. Everything was checking out ok, ph, nutes, light, etc. So I couldn't figure it out. I never read or knew you are supposed to shut off your pump once the roots hit the water and it had been on 24/7 with no problems. So long story short, I figured it out with the help of some here, and now have root rot. I have to go to a funeral in a bit so I can't change the res atm, but will when I get home today. I shut off the dam murderous pump, added 3 drops of superthrive to my 6 gallon res, and began prayin to the mj gods.....
Also stoppin at hydro store on way home, getting some hydrozyme.
I'm begining to wish I would have started one of the two systems out first.... feel like my brain is going to explode! lol Pics in my album.

Hey you need to replant a little faster from the cups....to 1 gal then to 3 gal.
I know how you feel about the seeds....I bought 10 DJ short blue berry $30 a seed...sprouted 4....three tried to do it and died and only 1 made it....you have to add 30 days to your grow if growing from seed insted of clones...it just takes time...there is no magic nutrients in this stage....
Keep up the good work....do not worry about different ages of your plants...it's not a problem...as some grow a different rates anyway.

OUCH! I got a 10 pack of DJ's Vaniluna for $17 a seed,... Cracked 2,... both are doing strong getting 3rd set of leaves now and look sweet. Hope to hell they're girls. If they aren't I've got a couple local breeders that will buy the boy's from me! ;)

I think she might make it (knock on wood) she has no new bad growth and is starting to shoot up again. Leaves are up and springy, she looks healthy! I'm planning on feeding her tomorrow, flushed on saturday, she hasnt had any water since. (ph will be adjusted to about 7.2 to slowly raise ph in soil)
C Plants
I am trying to top one of my c plants. I cut off the top of the plant approximately 1/4" from top node.... talk about anxiety! normal growth
Hydro
D Plants
still having issues with my resevoir. ph is 5.75, temp 74 or lower, resevoir light proof, 2 air pumps, 3 air stones, superthrive, 45ml to 6 gallon hygrozyme. Yesterday I completed a res change and added the above. I cleaned the res with hydrogen peroxide, broke everything down and cleaned it. I also washed the roots in a hydrogen peroxide solution. The plants did look better in the begining of the next day, however, began to look like their same old sad self........ roots are still mildly discolored, roots are still strong and do not break/ smoosh off.
Grow room:
Light: plants are growing a bit, so I moved the lights about a couple of inches to about, 16" from plant top
temp: temps range between 78-90, average temp is more towards 78, 90 temps are normally taken under the light
humidity: 40%
water: tap, left to sit, ph is about 5.5-5.75 outta the pipe
circulation fan with plenty of fresh air

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Soil grow:
B2 - growing, she's about 10", she grew 1" yesterday! Still has some of the dry burn from ph problem, however, 75% of the leaf is green so I'm leavin 'em. I feed and water with ph adjusted (7.2) solutions (soil is acidic, runoff is about 5.5-5.75)
C Plants - growing good too, topped one of them, it's bottom leaves are turning yellow now.... so I don't know if I did it wrong or not.... guess I'll c.....
Hydro Grow:
I've been having a hell of a time with this..... still have slight discoloration on the roots, but have extreme knew healthy growth. Flushed the system again today, added 50% nutes, 45ml to 6gallon hygrozyme, 50ml 3% hydrogen peroxide. Res temp averages 70-72, peak 74. It's weird, I'll wake up, theyre all looking good, nice color, nice and perky, etc etc, well never fail, everyday at about 4ish, the plants get all droopy and look like crap- everyday this happens! Some of the bottom leaves are brown/ dead, with some spots on them. Today I observed two of the fan leaves to dispaly "the claw", res ph was 6.25, normal is 5.5-5.8, res change time.....
Grow Room:
Temps: 75-80
Humidity: 35%-50%
Light: 17.5" from tops/ mh/ 18-6 400w + 85w cfl "warm"
Vent: osc fan
Other: humidifier, ice in res
I bought some lightproof/ thermal material and covered my res, secured it with white duct tape, 100% lightproof now. I also made a "belt" that goes around the res on the outside with "pouches/pockets" I put those hard blue frozen ice packs in em to keep temps down, working well so far.

Soil:
B2 - Still growing, I think it "may" be safe to say it recovered?! I began LST yesterday with this girl, she is my test run. Tied down both sides of her, then tied the top of her to the pot, then began to shape her to go around the pot horizontally at the same height.... we'll c..... she looks like something outta hellraiser now..... :wtf:
food - foxfarm grow big and big bloom, some plants sprayed with neem oil/soft soap. Mixed per ff feeding schedule.
C Plants - Topped plant is begining to grow new shoots, no shizzle, two of 'em! The bottom leaves are still a little yellow, but shes growing. Other one is doing good, I think it's time to transplant them.
D - ah, the diamond in my roughf <spelling?, despite keeping res temp down to around 67-74, increased air stones, lightproofed/ thermoproofed res, clipping, h202'in, hygrozyme, superthrive, sacrificed chickens, etc, my roots are still getting discolored with rot. HOWEVER, root growth is A+, there is no more "build up" of the rot on the res, tubes, stones, etc, or it was cut by at least 95%. So, like most info suggests, once you get rot, you keep rot.... just gotta figure a way to pull it through until next harvest! so, these girls are on a perma h202 diet for the time being, 'bout 50ml 3% to 6 gallons. Found a moth EATING my babies, it expericed slow death (and by that I mean I released him outside, I hope a bird ate him) took about a 1/4" chunk outta a leaf!
res change soup:
50% micro
50% grow
6 drops superthrive
45ml hygrozyme
50ml h202
occasional foilar spray
I mist the room several times a day, I also add frozen soda bottles filled with ice to res to keep temps down.
grow room:
temp: 80 ave
res temp: 70 ave
res ph: 5.75
humidity: 35%-42%
light: 400w mh, 16" distance, 18/6
vent: osc fan, ac

Soil:
B - soil runoff is now around 6.3, lst dosent appear to be working, it's still growing vertical, stems aren't shooting out. I might not have tied down far enough? Last time I gave her too much water, so between lst and overwater, shes been crabby..... still growing though....
C - finally transplanted, they were rootbound.... also soil was slightly acidic (must be the bag I got) so I added ph+ h2o. the topped plant is starting to get brown spots on her older leaves, new growth appears healthy so far. applied ff dont bug me, still got those dam flying things.
Hydro:
D - did a res change yesterday, reservoir wasn't 1/4 as dirty as it normally is. clipped off some really bad looking roots. res soup:
45ml hygrozyme
50ml h202
6 drops superthrive
50% micro nutes
50% grow nutes
600 PPM
ph'd to 5.8-9
someleave still have the claw. growth appears really good. noticed someof the little plants leaves are turning brown/ brown spots.
grow room:
temp: 80 ave
hum: 40 ave
res temp: 68 ave
lights: 400w mh approx. 14.5" from leaf tops, 85w cfl warm
vent: fan

Day 51
Soil grow
B - Plant seems to be stunted, roots feel firm and compact?(I might need to repot, I??m flowering in a week, was going to transplant before switch anyway) older leaves have turned yellow/ brown spots/ fell off. Growth appears horizontal now instead of vertical, there??s ??little trees? coming from the stems towards the light, complete with a set of new leaves.
C - since transplant, the plants seem to not have liked the change. There has been new growth, but it is slow. There are no new signs of problem leaves. Finally got FF don??t bug me and have applied several times, I mist plants lightly if I see any flying bugs. I??m going to start flowering both soil plants on 11/05.
Hydro
D - The system has been hard to control. Hard to control ph, hard to control root rot, hard to control temperature. The plants are now drinking about a gallon a day (which I did NOT know, checked the res after one day of not, 2 GALLONS GONE!!!, plants look like they are suffering now because of the lack of water) Root rot sucks, I get my roots looking semi good, then BAM, right back to crap. I have to constentaly add h202, rinse roots, trim roots, change res 2-3 times a week,, add ice 4-6 times a day. Overall the plants look good. Some plants have random spot patterns, burned tips. Overall the leaves are lush green, the new leaves do look and feel dry, but I think that is because they did not have enough water. The ph is another issue, again, I think it is because of the decayed roots from the rot. I know in fish tanks decaying material raise the ph?.. So I have to keep adding ph down?.. Res averages around 7.2-7.5 with spikes 8.0! I bring down to as close to 5.8 as I can, 8 hrs later back up 1.0! Plants range from 16??-10?, with a max of 11 levels of leaves on the largest one. Leaves have 9 ??fingers?.
Grow room:
Lights: 400w mh, 18/6, 12? from tops
85w (350w equal) warm spectrum 1? from tops
85w (350w equal) cool spectrum 1? from tops
Temp: average 78
Hum: average 30
Res temp ave: 68
Vent: osc fan
9 plants total
On November 5 all 9 of my plants will be at least 8 weeks old. Most of the plants are in ??good? shape. I seem to have problems daily, but have been ??making it??. I guess?.. I??m starting the flowering stage on 11/05 for all my plants. I also will be starting my next ??real seeds? grow, I plan on doing sog, to harvest once a month (not sure if I??m loggin this one!). If I figured everything out correctly I should be harvesting around Christmas, sweet~!
If anyone has any suggestions/ words of wisdom?. Id appreciate it, im not sure if I suck growing or if I??m experiencing everything a new grower goes through. Sometimes I feel like if something can go wrong, it does! *sigh*

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Honestly I feel like I'm in the same boat, for every step forward it's two steps back. We have jumped in head first. We will have more dramatic set backs, but if we don't get too discouraged the learning curve will be huge.
Get everything out of the way with the first few grows and gain tremendous knowledge of what to do and what not to do.
At least thats my glass half full philosophy at the moment.
If nothing else at least we're having fun right???? (sometimes I'm not so sure)

PurpleRoot's first grow log
Well my girls made it, and they all look pretty good. There were a few minor problems that have developed, but overall they look good and I think will produce nicely.
Soil
All I gotta say is holly god! Little did I know what a little over a week in time can do to plants. I remember these little twiggy things when I left, came home, I swear I have a scene from the jurrasic park ride in the room!!! the plants transformed from something from the jurrasic period, including some random flying things..... those were taken care of quickly.... the care taker only messed up one feeding, so I have a little nute burn on some of the leaves, I think they'll be fine though.
hydro
I guess the proof is in the pudding! If I thought my soil plants were crazy, when I left the plants were close to 2', some are close to 5'!!!!! there are leaves as big as my head, they are no longer supported by stems, but by 4" TRUNKS!!!!! some random leaves fell off, so i cleaned up dead mass and cleaned everything up really good. used a mild biofriendly clean solution in room. i was waaaaay overwhelmed when I got home, and honestly a little scared too, I had no idea........ so i threw em into 12 and 12 with my mh and worked on light proofing the room all day, its total darkness..... the res is drinking about a gallon of water a day! im checking everyday for sexing, its hard to tell i feel like almost all the plants have spikes.... so it still maybe too early, they have only been on the 12/12 for 2 days. after i clean up my memory card of vaca photos ill be adding.... wait until u c, if there is anyone following, ull get a hoot.

IT'S A BOY!!!! hoooooray!
soil
the three soil plants were a little nute burned, still growing and living, but I think theyre all boys... I'm seeing "balls" growing at the intersections of the nodes. I'll probably give them another day or two before I decide whether or not theyre boys, then they will be executed.
hydro
so outta six pots, 4 were dudes, and only two were girls. figures the two largest were dudes, and the one smallest saddest looking plant is a female... murpheys law, as usual. the murder took place this morning at about 5am. was a sad pile of useless mj, like so many before me, I was like "omg, there must be something I can do with them, there HAS to be SOME use for 'em...." well I was wrong just like everyone else, I tried alcohol, ice, and other kinds of craziness to "extract" "non-existent thc".... so if your reading this before your first grow, trust me, you cant use males, chuck 'em! I've made hash plenty before so I know the tech, they're junk, IMO.
thankful for the two girls, they could have all been boys. i'm keeping a close eye on them to check and make sure they dont hermi. theyre dark time is def dark, the door to the room is covered by about 10 curtain/blanket/sheets/ light proof curtains/etc, stappled, nailed, taped, and proped shut (it really got nailed into my head ABSOLUTE darkness)
for now I troop on. I check the water everyday. I've noticed a small leak where my valve is, before next grow im gonna seal with some sort of waterproof sealant. i add about 3/4 a gallon of water with 40-50ml of h202 to my hydro res everyday. every four days I add 50-60% nutes. once a week i add six drops of superthrive and 45ml of hygrozyme to my 6 gallon res. soil plants get water/fed everyother as per foxfarm bottle directions. lights are approximately 14 inches from the tops of the plants, mh, 12/12, temps are between 73-78, res temp 64-68, humidity ranges between 35-65, have a circulation fan, hepa/carbon filter, window fan set to exhaust, ph ranges between 5.8-6.8.
theyre pictures of the plants sex in my album. theyre sleeping right now, Ill try and take pics tomorrow and add them to my album.

PurpleRoot's first grow log
soil
One of the three ended up being a girl. She's only about a foot tall, but at least I'll get something. I'm feeding her big bloom and a molasses solution.
Hydro
Two of the six ended up being girls. One of them is about 30" and has two main "stems", it almost appears as if I topped it, but I didn't.... whatever, glad it's doing what it's doing. The other girl is very small and skinny. She has hairs all over her, I can even see crystals begining to form, I'm sure she will need support by the time she begins to bud.
All the girls are begining to bud. The tops are exploding with white hairs and crystals!!!
On a side note, I began my next grow on 11/15. I'm setting up another room and will have one veg room and one flower room. I plan on having four 6 gallon res's. 2 will be in the veg room and 2 will be in flower. It should allow me to harvest 1-3 plants once a month.
I got my MJ grow bible by Jorge C., I love it. After I'm finished I'm hoping to find a more detailed book on marijuana hydroponic growing specifically, if anyone has any good suggestions, please post 'em for me!
No pictures this time, camera crapped out, hoping to get one on tuesday.:wtf:

plants have been in flower since 11/05/10: 18 days
Here are some pictures taken today of the two hydro and one soil plants:

nothing new to report plants appear to be doing ok. I noticed the hydro girls look wilted and "old". the roots are ok though, they still have mild discoloration, and I have to add h202 every other day or so. I have noticed some of the leaves are displaying salt toxicity, probably from the h202 so I have cut back. I still maintain the res with frozen ice bottles. I began to feed the soil plant a molasses solution with my grow big (1tea to 1gal).
