Having serious problem, Need Help.
I built a rubbermaid 30 gallon grow box. 6 26w 6500k CFLS for veg, with an 18/6 light time. Seeds germinate successfully, and I place them root down under 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil. 5 days later, no sprout so I dug up seed and the root was just dead and rotted. This has happened 6 times. I have no idea what the problem is, and its getting me really down because I have read hundreds of threads and books on growing, have a great setup and know how to take care of a plant but for some reason it wont sprout. The max temp in the box is 82 with the lowest at 72.
If someone could explain whats going wrong it would be much helpful.
Thanks,
Indie.

I don't germinate. I know people like to do that in paper towels and whatnot, but it seems an extra step to me. When I grow from seeds I just stick 'em in dirt or a seedling cube, make sure it's extra moist and put a dome over it. 5/6 seeds usually pop for me.
Hope that helps.

Actually after the first failed attempt of the germinated seeds, I tried to just sprout them from soil. But again, still no sprouts. That time the roots didnt even form.

Well. I suppose the only thing left to do is make sure your seeds are viable. Get them from a reputable source, if you aren't.
I really can't help otherwise.

I get them from Attitude, and I hear good things from them. Ill just have to keep on trying I guess.

Could be damping off or root rott. Is it fresh soil or re-used? The soil could be too wet. A very mild bleach solution (like 10 to 1) can be used to prevent damping off, if that's what it is. Even if it's not, it couldn't hurt. Do you know what the soil temp is? You could also try a seedling heat mat to warm the soil above air temp. They're not that expensive and it will help propagation. Or you may have better luck starting them in rockwool or plugs

Im gonna try again but this time Im going to use Ocean Farms Ocean Forrest since I hear great things about it and many people say it works from start to finish.
Still debating on whether or not to germinate with the paper towel method again or just put the seeds in the soil and let it do its work.

how long after discovering a successful germination are you waiting to put them in the soil? and what kind of soil are you using? u could be using some soil with enough extra ferts to burn the rootlings to almighty hell lol
did you check the rundown ph? how long are the roots at first when you stuck'm in the dirt?
i use the paper towel method all the time, works like a charm for me.. make sure ur not adding too much water.. and try starting them out in something organic

I believe thats the potential problem. I used some random soil outta the garage before I had really read up on all this stuff. Its potentially old, and I dont recall what it was, but it was probably bought from home depot, so its probably Miricle Grow. My next attemp will be with Ocean Forrest. I hope it works better this time.

Edit from above post:
I went to the local garden store today and they have ocean forest. I must say even through the bag the soil feels light and fluffy compared to what I was using. I feel optimisic about my next attempt. I also saw that they have big bloom and grow big, but no tiger bloom. Is there a substitute for tiger bloom? (IE anything with alot of phosphorous) or should I just order the 3 pack over the internet or something. Anyone have any experiance with other nutes that arnt 20 dollars a bottle? haha. More help appreciated, just didnt wanna make a new thread about something im sure people who have already posted could helpp with.

Nutes aren't usually something you should skimp on. Many people have many anwers for nutrients.
Jack's Classic All Purpose Plant Food for indoor and outdoor plants, trees, shrubs, vegetables, and turf from J.R. Peters, Inc., Fertilizer Manufacturer
Sensi Grow | Hydroponics | Advanced Nutrients | Hydroponic Gardening
FoxFarm Soil & Fertilizer Company
Some people don't even use nutes at all. While you don't want to get time-released soil, some soils come pre fertilized and don't need to be adjusted. Especially if you transplant a few times during the plant's life, this works well.

Sounds like you're killing them with kindness. Just put em in dirt and keep it moist and warm same like Jack and his beanstalk.

Miracle Grow and Miracle Grow type soils are acceptable for seeds and rooting clones, as long as it's not the 6 month formula. A little tricky with sensitive strains and newbies, but acceptable. I learned to grow cannabis using both Miracle Grow Potting Mix, and Miracle Grow All Purpose nutrients. That was the only stuff available locally except for the Supersoil, which I'd use if MG not available. (Supersoil is what I'm using at the moment)
Don't confuse compost with soil. They are two different animals, and are ph buffered differently. (compost is usually ph buffered too low for cannabis)
No addition of nutrients of any type or kind, till the 3rd or 4th internode. If it's already in the soil, so be it. But don't add more till necessary.
Keep soil moist, not wet. You can easily drown the embryo.
I use the damp paper towel method, because it works to see which seeds are healthy and viable. Rinse an unbleached paper towel, and lay it out in a food storage container with a lid. (Rubbermaid or Ziplock type) Keep the paper towel damp at all times, keep 'em in darkness, and let the taproot get about 1/8 to 1/4 inch, and carefully plant in whatever soil you are using. I plant it so the top of the seed is barely visible, but the roots are down in the soil. Carefully water 'em in. (I use a spray mister) If too aggressive with watering, it can make the seed 'migrate' or sink lower in the soil, or wash down the inside edge, (between cup and soil) never to be seen again.

I soak my seeds in a glass of clean water till they are saturated and sink to the bottem (usually takes a day) then i put them in soil. I have had great luch this way. SOunds to me like you got a bad batch of seeds.
