Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
This is my first time growing, and it actually got started about a month ago. I have been taking pictures this whole time, and things have really changed so far with this grow. So, my next few posts are going to bring you up to date with what I got going.
The setup :
3'x3'x7' cabinet
125 watt cfl 5u 6500k
Home made aeroponic/deep water culture tub
Cutting Edge Solutions 3-part nutrients
Unknown bag seed (Was supposed to be bluedream, but I killed those durring germination.)

This time is about a couple weeks from germination. So, this is where I started counting veg days. Seems to be going good so far. Have them on 1/4 strength nutes. (looks like I can't post pics yet, but when I can you will get them all)

Burnt the tops a little, so moved the light up some. 1/2 strength nutes. Noticed that roots look like they are getting stained by the nutes.

Day 11 Veg.
New growth seems to be slow, so i decided to get a 400w digital ballast. Full strength nutes. The leaves have discoloration and are very brittle. Was using the drops method for checking ph. I got a ph pen and found out that the ph has been off. The colored water from the nutes was giving me incorrect readings with the drops. Put the mh light in the room and within an hour the temp was over 103F!!! So, took it out and back to cfl while I figure something out. The temp with the cfl is mid 80's, I guess the 4" muffin fan just isn't enough! Also discovered that due to the temps they have root rot, That wasn't staining on the roots!!

Day 23 Veg.
Have made a different hydro setup. This one is a dual chamber design. So, now it's just aero. Have been adding H2O2 to res to try and battle the root rot. Made a "cool hood" light fixture for the HID. With it installed the highest temp is 92F. I know still too high. I really need to get a better exhaust fan. Also adding frozen bottles of water to the res, trying to keep temp down. The plants do seem healthier, so i decided to cut off all the damaged leaves and LST both of them.

Day 25 Veg.
Installed a Vortex 4" exhaust fan. Highest temp now was 86F, but that was a really hot day. The temp seems to average 82F with the light on. Still adding H2O2 and frozen bottles to the res daily. New growth appears to be healthy, although they look like they're only a week old. Even the roots are very small.

Day 27 Veg.
The root rot does not seem to be getting any better at all. I decided to take drastic action. They are now in a DWC filled almost to the top of net pots with: RO water, 5ml/gal 30% H2O2, 4ml/gal CalMag+, & 1ml/gal SuperThrive. I hope this mixture will attack all the root rot and wash it away. For some reason I also decided to untie and top both of them. I'm going to let them sit in this for a couple days, while adding additional H2O2 as the other gets used. Also putting frozen bottles in res to keep temps down. This will give me time to completely rebuild my hydro setup yet again. Now it's going to be a sealed chamber and a sealed res, with sprayers coming in from the top. The pump is going to be inline instead of submersible, with quick disconnect fittings. Once this is done, res changes should be a breeze compared to the first two setups.

Day 30 Veg.
The girls(hope they're girls) are going on day 4 of their "root scrub". The roots are nice and white with new growth now. :jumphappy: The new hydro setup is complete, and if I do say so myself, it looks awesome!:D Tonight they are getting switched over to their new homes. I wish I could already attach pics so you guys (and dolls) could see this. Oh well hopefully soon.

Day 30 Veg.
Room temp = 82*F
Room humidity = 41%
Res temp = 74*F
PH = 5.8
The girls are in their new home now. Feeding them half strength nutes.
The Nutes:
2 1/2 gal RO water
4ml/gal micro, grow, and bloom (Cutting Edge Solutions 3-part)
5ml/gal Cal Mag+
10ml/gal Hygrozyme
5ml/gal Pro Silicate
5ml/gal Liquid Karma
1/2ml/gal SuperThrive
The sprayer timer is set for 40 minutes on and 32 minutes off. (My timer only has twenty daily settings, so this is what I came up with.) The roots are still a little slimy, but 100x better than before. Now it's up to the Hygrozyme to finish the job.
Here's the pics. :stoned: :weedpoke:

Day 32 Veg.
Room Temp = 83* F
Room Humidity = 43%
Res Temp = 78* F
PH = 5.6 (adjusted from 6.1)
The new system is working like I wanted it to.:D
There is some new growth, but not much. I guess right now they are using their energy for the roots.
:stoned:Here are the pics:stoned:

Day 33 Veg
Room Temp = 81*F
Room Humidity = 45%
Res Temp = 79*F
PH = 5.5 (adjusted from 5.9)
They definitely are looking healthier today, and have new growth. I wish I could afford a water chiller, so I don't always have to remember to put frozen water bottles in the res.:icon506:
Here's the pics, and what do you think, do you think they will pull through just fine?
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
They look fine. Good color, obvious new growth. You won't see the growth when you compare them one day to the next, but step back and look at the pictures from a week ago, then where they are now. Big difference.

The plants are definitely looking much healthier today. Their is alot of new under growth too. They almost look like mini forests, thanks to the LSTing. I think it's cool that one plant now looks like many plants. :jointsmile:

Day 35 Veg
Room Temp = 81*F
Room Humidity = 45%
Res Temp = 79*F
PH = 5.6(adjusted from 6.4)
This morning I noticed that some of the leaves looked like they had a magnesium deficiency, so I added 15ml of CalMag+ to the res. They still are going strong though. When I got home from work, the curled leaves seemed to be righting themselves, and I was greeted with a very nice aroma.:jointsmile:
Here's the pics
The last pic is a close up of the leaf discoloration. Do you also think this is from magnesium deficiency??? (hoping I guessed right)

Day 37 Veg
Room Temp = 80*F
Room Humidity = 47%
Res Temp = 78*F
PH = 5.6(adjusted from 6.1)
Yesterday I did a res change, with full strength nutes. The leaves are looking a bit tattered from whatever deficiency they had, especially the smaller of the two. Unfortunately nobody on here has been able to tell me what caused it. I even created a thread in the plant problem forum, with the completed questionnaire. I would like to know:wtf:, because I am a noob and am building up my mental library. That way if it ever pops up again, I can be on top of it.
The Nute Mix:
8ml/gal each of Micro, Grow, & Bloom (Cutting Edge Solutions 3-part)
5ml/gal Pro Silicate
10ml/gal CalMag+
10ml/gal Liquid Karma
10ml/gal Hygrozyme
1ml/gal Super Thrive
Here's the pics

I have been contemplating doing a scrog with this grow. The shelving unit that I got to put my setup on has a third shelf.:detective1:
It's like it was destiny, the third shelf could be my framework for my screen. So after a long time of cutting wire and constructing, this is now officially a scrog grow.
I also topped off the res. They drank half a gallon in one day! This time I am topping off with premixed water at full strength that I'm keeping in the fridge. Hopefully this takes care of any future deficiency issues.
I have one more question for you. I have not had to use any ph up, only down. Is this normal or an indication of anything?:wtf:
pic 1 is just before I installed the screen
the other of two are of after installation
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
So I was sitting there admiring what I had accomplished, and it dawned on me that it would be easier to do some trimming now before they grew through the screen. I took every thing off except for the tops.
Now here's the bare naked ladies. :rastasmoke:

Day 43 Veg
Room Temp = 82*F
Room Humidity = 46%
Res Temp = 79*F
Ph = 5.6
TDS = 1500ppm
The Leaves are starting to look like they are getting nute burn and possibly lock-out. So, i finally got an EC meter. My res was at 2300ppm!!! So I did a flush with Clearex from Botanicare, 15ml/gal. Ran this for about an hour. Starting tds was 0ppm, after flush was 600ppm. Whipped up a new mixture and did a res change. I'm changing my top-off mixture as follows below, in hopes of not burning them again.
Top-Off Mixture:
10ml/gal CalMag+
2ml/gal each of micro, grow, & bloom (Cutting Edge Solutions 3-part)
Now here's the pics
The last one is of the gravity bong I just made (got me super stoney)

As the tops grow into the screen make sure you use the screen to train them away from eachother, and kick the lights before they crown over the top much,... at least that's the way I understand how it's done.
I had to kill my mother plant since she's too damned big, so I tossed her into flowering! ;) SCROG of course, training that plant to the screen took over half an hour, and she's covering 2.5'x2.5' now! (Nearly half of the squares of the flowering area!) :cool:
I"m gonna have to keep re-training her as she stretches or cull out smaller less vigorous tops in favor of getting more light on the bigger stuff. Such is the downfall of dropping the screen on the first day of 12/12 :o
Your looking like your well on your way to a happy healthy harvest! :jointsmile:
When you planning on kicking the lights?

Thanks for the tips canis :jointsmile:
I would like to get the screen about 3/4 full before I switch the lights.

Day 49 Veg
Room Temp = 82*F
Room Humidity = 41%
Res Temp = ~ 80*F

TDS = 1300ppm @ 0.5
Did a res change today, also some training and tucking of fan leaves. Not much else to say, so.... :hippy:

I was wondering if anyone could tell me from the pics so far, what type of genetics these may be?? Indica, Sativa, Hybrid, etc.....
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
Does anybody have some thoughts on what type of pheno traits they might be showing, and what type of things I may expect to come?
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
So today I found the perfect remedy to all my aches and pain
Step 1: Don't eat all day
Step 2: Have four tall glasses of Jameson with just a splash of ginger ale in 'em (of coarse at your local irish pub with good folk)
Step 3: Go home and take a fat bowl of Diesel straight to the head
Step 4: I am so stoney and happy :stoned: ......... :computerlove1: ......... :toilet_claw: ......... :rastabanna:
P.S. The only thing that could make me feel better right now, was if my girl was home and sitting on my lap. :thumbsup:.........:giggity:

Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
cant wait to see the scrog in action...you saw my setup...do you think i can still benefit from scrog, im 2weeks into flower..
do you have a flowering spectrum bulb? or just using that cfl?
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
Scrog is a training method and not just a support screen, so if you are already two weeks into flowering it wont benefit you much at all.
On the first page of my log I switched out to a 400watt digital ballast. Right now I'm using a mh bulb and have a hps for flowering.

Nice setup man. looks like it'll be a good grow. Do you know if you have males or females yet?:jointsmile:
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
One appears to be showing female preflowers and the other one is still to early to tell.
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
Id be careful ScOGing too early because if you ScOG with a male in the bunch its a pain in the ass trying to untangle from the screen. Best thing to do is cut a clone and plant it with some cloning soil and put them under 12/12 light for a couple weeks to find out which plants are male and which are female. Then when you figure out which ones are male, take them out asap. then once you know you only have females do the ScOG.

I completely agree, but I'm growing with what sprouted and it's my first grow. I've already came to terms with the possibility that they both might be male, so I won't be disappointed if that happens. Of coarse I wish they're both girls though. :weedpoke:

Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
Hello there! Glad to see a fellow scrogger. I'm just starting my SCROG and looks like you're off to a great start. One thing I noted is that you said you were going to fill up your screen 75% before flipping to 12/12. In my experience, plants will STRETCH the first few weeks of 12/12 and will effectively double in size. If you are unfamiliar with the strain, I'd play it safe and fill 60% of your screen before you flip.
If you have a healthy amount of tops (which it looks like you do) you should be able to fill that screen up in no time. Another tip I've learned is to keep pushing the tops under and training the first 2 weeks of 12/12. Helps a LOT on yield and making sure you little cabinet doesn't turn into a jungle. I'm definitely going to be following this thread.
Keep up the good work!
-
Bag seed first time grow aero/dwc
My hopes with this scrog is to let them stretch about 10" above the screen, because I have the head room to do that. Crossing my fingers for multiple larger colas. We shall see how this works out. :thumbsup:

Day 71 Veg
Well I finally decided it's time to flip the switch. I still have been removing lower fan leaves. I believe that a nitrogen lock-out occured due to a ph swing, you can see the affected leaves in the pic. So, tomorrow will be the first day of 12/12.
