Health Care Bill/ Tanning Tax
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Obama administration is turning up the heat on tanning salons across the country with the passage of its new health care bill.
To help fund the $940 billion health care overhaul, a 10% tax on individuals receiving indoor tanning services was tacked on, and the initiative is expected to generate $2.7 billion over ten years.
Cutting out the 'Botax'
The 10% tanning tax has replaced the 5% tax on cosmetic surgery that was originally included in the bill.
That tax, nicknamed the "Botax," would have included Botox injections and breast implants among other elective surgeries, but was cut out of the bill last year after heavy lobbying from the medical and dermatology industries.
Because the Botax was expected to generate $5.8 billion, more than double the amount the tanning tax is projected to raise, many tanning industry professionals are furious about the switch, arguing that while the tanning tax targets middle-class, women-owned businesses, the Botax would mainly impact wealthier Americans who would be more able to handle higher prices.

No tax hikes for the middle class huh? FUCK this government!!!
Now, lets make a list of these crooked fucks that have had botox, good reason for them not to tax it right, I'll start; John Kerry.

This is your attack against the Obama administration? Seriously? There is plenty to attack but you think a tax on tanning salons is going to gouge the middle class and foment class war? For starters, these salons are down right dangerous and should be taxed out of existence. More to the point, when Americans start tightening the belt I assume this is one of the first expenditures to go after protein, education, and health care for the kids obviously...

Start a class war? HELL NO, that's why the government can get away with this type of shit. If it don't affect me big deal:
Tax the hell out of cigarettes but not pipe tobacco/ non-smokers cheer
Extra tax on soda and box juices/ health nuts cheer
Lets raise the gas tax/ The rich could really give a crap less
Divide and conquer one sector at a time and the masses cheer. I find your comment about taxing these places out of existence a bit ironic for this site...what about when they decide to tax care-givers/co-ops/dispensaries/ or personal growers in legal mmj states out of business? You just know that the masses will cheer on that also.

Points well taken. I agree with your view of the divide and conquer approach to crowd management. Clearly I didn't explain myself very well and likely I didn't understand your position due to lack of information.
My view of this type of tax is that it should be used to encourage healthy life choices by the population at large. So tax the shit out of tobacco - all tobacco, and tax tanning beds, soda, foods high in trans fats, etc. At the end of the day though, these kinds of taxes are the basis of social policy. And while those revenues are a part of the pie, in no way can we look to these kinds of taxes to solve our revenue generation issues. To raise real revenues we must seriously examine previous tax cuts and who is/has benefiting/ed the most from the current system. Only then can we craft tax policy that will generate the revenues we need.
I will go further to say that this is about wealth redistribution but not as seen through the Glen Beck/Sarah Palin/GOP prism. This is not socialism, give me a break. This is not about creating a flat middle class. It is about doing what is fair and just. We can craft a system that taxes wealth without making people poor. And the crap about stifling investment is pure BS spun by the ultra wealthy to justify their obscene wealth. I'm happy to go into the reasons why if any one cares.

One thing that you should know is that I follow none of the present or existing party labels. There are issues on all sides of the table that I agree with and also disagree.
What pisses me off is the fact that these elected assholes feel like they need to tax us more in order to get more revenue but where are the budget cuts? This is expected to generate $2.7 across 10 years...great...now cut out some of the pork that will equal the same amount and feel our pain a bit.
Healthy life choices?
A simple glance at the Botox packaging shows that there are many risks, some of which can be significant. In addition to paralyzed muscles outside of the area of injection as well as drooling and eyelid control problems, there are other more serious risks. Botox injections can spread to areas of the face and neck that are required for such functions as breathing and swallowing, and the toxin can paralyze these areas for months, creating a severe health risk.
Botox Gone Wrong- Horror Stories Every Patient Should Know
As stated in the article, botax would have generated more than double the amount. I hear allot more about the Hollywood and political famous doing that than my meager neighbors and friends. Face it, these fucks looked out for themselves once again and screwed the middle class.
It's time all us tanning, smoking, juice drinking sons of a bitches kick these upper class egomaniacs right in the nuts!

If you are not smart enough to avoid a known cause of skin cancer and that doing the activity will make you more likely to get sick and cost us money to treat, that person should have to realize the real cost of tanning, that being the cost of the service and it's affect on your health down the line.
Do we charge more for life insurance for smokers and the obese? Yes.
Lifestyle choices cost us all money.

If being pissed off about more and more taxes on the middle class while they pass by on their own lil' "life choices" is whining then fine, I guess I am. Best of wishes to all these that use Botox and sided with the medical and dermatology industries.
Life choices cost us all? Great! Sports cause injuries that could last a life time....lets tax the hell out of all sporting good items. Recreational vehicles such as boats, motorcycles, jet ski's, 4x4's, etc. all cause injuries also. The list of personal choices can go on and on.
Fact is that I don't go to a tanning salon, I drink very little soda, and my cigs are rolled using the tax exempt pipe tobacco (tastes just like a regular cig anyways). With that being said, I still believe in a lil' thing called freedom of choice. Look around you, what personal choices do you have that you don't want taxed to death?

you make a good point, ModFather, we just accept that its okay to be taxed for almost everything today. there once was a time in our country when just a very small tax on our tea would get us up in arms. those must have been the days.

Wait. No. That's just not right. Who slept through history class... The mere act of taxation was not the issue. It was taxation without representation that pissed people off. The first act passed by the American Congress was a tax bill!
I'm all for social policy however, as I said, that ain't going to solve our mess. We need to role back the tax cuts of the past 15 years for anyone making more than $250K. Further, we need a more robust graduated tax policy which increases at regular intervals along the income scale. We also need to close down loopholes that allow the mega rich to shelter their wealth. And if you believe in supply side voodoo economics then I'm willing to consider breaks and exemptions for the wealthy who actually invest their surplus wealth into productive activities. Otherwise it should be fair game.

Sorry about the use of the word whine, it was a poor choice.
I guess that in the context of a nationalized health care system where we all share the costs of other peoples choices I don't disagree that if you do something we have proven to kill you, you have to pay for the choice.
All the things you listed do cause injury, some catastrophic, which raise the costs for everyone. So somehow to be fair to others that should reflect in your policy costs. Now I admit I have played all those sports and did most of the activities but I also have paid for it in the costs of a bad back and arthritis all over. I also expect to pay more because I abused my body.

hard working small buisness's that make up the foundation of America fall into the over 250,000$ mark.......sounds like a plan to raise unemployment even higher. Like the small buisness owner in Wisconsin told the VEEP Biden personally......"why dont you lower our taxes and we'll call it even." This sentiment is spreading and the administration is powerless to stop it. Americans reject Obama's twisted vision of an almighty Government providing and safe gaurding everything from the internet to what words we use.....and they will back it up at the polls in November. Change is coming......just in the midterms 2010.....some fresh new faces. Politicians are like diapers and have to be changed often for the exact same reasons.

How does your post relate to the subject of someone paying for their own abuse of their body by lifestyle choices? You would think the conservative you claim to be would agree with that position.
Instead you post some stuff that could be lifted from any article on worldnetdaily.com complaining about Obama.
In one post you said you voted for Obama, from looking at even the subjects of all your post on the political forum I have to doubt the veracity of your statement.

Seriously???... Sorry for the O.T. and threadjacking Mr Moderator.... Do you have a smiley face shooting himself? How much does pipe tobacco cost there? How much do you save by rolling your own? And does it really taste like a regular cig without the filter? Long ago my father smoked a pipe. Will always remember that smell. Would not want to smoke a cig of that stuff though. Can you give me the brandname of what you smoke?

About $7.50 for a 5 oz. bag + $2.50 for the filtered cigarette tubes.

Well, one bag makes a good carton for $10.00 while a carton of Marlboro's costs just shy of $65.00.....net savings of $55.00. Guess who got the other $55.00? BINGO....state and fed tax!!!

The name is Largo. The gal at the shop told me that this is the same as the cigarette tobacco but packaged in a manner that they can't tax the crap out of it. I'd compare the taste to a Marlboro red.

This is a bit late as I've been up river... read overseas in your favorite part of the world. A two week consulting gig and well worth the time. I love Dubai and Oman. Unfortunately no diving for me this go around. It was all work.
So Islandboy, I appreciate your heads up on eastbaygordo. The problem is that I don't really believe anything you say, Mexican wife and all. So I looked through all of his old posts. No, I didn't read every one but I scanned all 8 pages of his post headline statistics and read a number of them. The most objectionable material that I saw had to do with shooting republicans in the face which I took as a bit of hyperbole (it means exaggeration for dramatic effect). It is not language the I would have chosen but it is not the worst thing that I've read posted on these boards by a long shot (recall your deleted post that referred to assassinating national leaders for example).
Is there something that I missed which is worth damning him/her to your special Glenn Beck hell hole? I'm guessing no but seeing as you slandered him/her I'm giving you the opportunity to show me what I missed.

He just has a man crush on me and has these confusing feelings, he feels icky about himself.
But seriously. There is an IB on every internet forum (massive posts directly cut and pasted from faux news sites like WND and Newsmax) and I would be better off ignoring all his posts that don't relate to helping others.
