I have my seedling setting in about 2 inches of hydrotron, this sits on top a 5 inch layer of tron rapped in a cotton t shirt to wick water up.<all in one plastic container. which sits in a bucket of water mixed with general hydro nutes. and a small air stone in it <very small air flow.

The leaves started to droop after my first nute change. could this be the roots arent able to grow trough the cotten rapped around the bottom layer of tron.

Or could the leaf droop be because . I noticed the new nute solution had a high ph around 7+ < wich I changed out this morning ,nutes i put in were at 5.+

your setup sounds like a pain in the ass, not sure the problem as i have limited knowledge on hydro type set ups. what if that shirt gets moldy during the grow? why not go with soil, way easier+less problems. sorry not too much help.

Weed can grow at PH 7 and weed can grow at PH 5.

However, rapid swings of PH are ill-advised.
It causes stress.

yesterday I changed water and had the ph at 5.5today when i checked seedling the leaves were drooping again i checked the ph and it had went back up to near 7

What could be causing the ph to rise Like that?

when nutes at 7.0 ph and i do a nute change with 5.5 ph is that too rapid a change???


Ps Can i just root a seedling in a rock wool cube , and drop in a bubbler with out using hydro tron or any meidum?

Hydrotron is the culprit here.
It must be pretreated by rinsing and then soaking in a low PH water bath.

That said, even after soaking in PH 5.4 water for a week it still caused my PH to climb.:wtf:

So, I don't use it anymore. got a 50# sack in the shed.
Free to a good home.;)

Keep in mind that the PH scale is NOT linear.
PH6 is 10 times more acid than PH7.
PH5, 100 times.

An abrupt change of PH, (like changing out the res water), can kill, even weed, from the shock.
A gradual change is less stressful but will lock out nutrients if it stays too high or too low for too long.

In answer to your next question, yes you can.
I have used rockwool in a drip system and found that is does get soggy/saturated easily.
If the water is properly aerated, it can works as well as DWC.
If not? :(

Suggest you look into coco coir.:thumbsup:
It is very forgiving, inexpensive, grows big, like "solidstate hydroponics", and is quite difficult to overwater.

Because I have a very black thumb, I need all the he'p I can get just to keep from killin' my girls.
I went from soil, to H'tron, to Rockwool, to hydro, to coco.
With coco, even a putzer like me can grow magnificent meds.

I happen to have alot of coco. I tryed using it in a wick system and plants seemed to get too much water . how do you use coco in your set up/

Wicking is tricky with any medium, as you have found.
I use hydro-nutes of course, and water from the top, by hand, as needed.

I do, exclusivly.

That picture was of a soil test.

Got a friend whose a pro grower.
Said he thought his soil mix was superior to any other medium.
I said, why guess about something important!

Had him mix me a batch of his best soil and clip me some cuttings of girls raised in his soil.

You can see the results.
Guess what he grows in now?:)
I'm partial to Botanicare, but any decent, rinsed coco will do.

Water it less often than soil, but never let it completely dry out.
And use hydro nutes.
Coco is a clean slate so one needs to add all the trace elements that we trust will be found in soil.
If you add them yourself, you know they are there, in an available form, and in the proper ratio.:jointsmile:

Ok I gave up on the hydrotron. I took 3 gallon pot filled it with 100% coco Poured like 30 gallons of hot water trough it .and squeesed out as much water as i could the water run off was ph 5.6 I then poured trough my nute mix of generl hdyrophonics nutes
with a ph of 6.0 I took the 3 inch seedling out of the Hydrotron saving the rockwool cube it was in and as much of the little white roots as i could. placed it in the Coco mix and put it under light. After 12 hours i checked it and it appeared to be uneffected.
12 hours later I checked it again and the leaves appeared to bedrooping a little Is this normal? < i poured one cup of water right next to the rockwool cube it germinated in .< did that help? I also notice the tips of acouple of the leves were truning white< puzzled>

To be expected, sounds like transplant shock.

Probably not.
Rockwool stays too wet as it is.
And next time you rinse, use cold water.
Warm water may rinse mo betta, but it holds less air.

Hey weez... I see that you like coco better but how does the flavor compare to a good soil mix? I know my experience with hydro left me with big buds and super fast growth but it lacked the flavor of some good soil...

Odd!
I honestly could not tell them apart by flavor.

Though I did grow a very tasty blueberry girl by locking out the Phosphorus.

She went all bright red stems and canary yellow leaves under the tropical sun.
V.:cool: looking.
Even :cool:er tasting.

The taste was superior to all her sisty fuglers. :jointsmile:
I miss her already.
