Advice needed from grow tent owners
Hello grow tent owners, i am thinking of uupgrading my grow room setup and i got a couple of questions.
I want to buy one of these setups, package with everthing included, lights, carbon filter, extraction fan etc. The specific one being this Grow tent 120 & Grow Light 600w & Smell Stop Fan Kit on eBay (end time 17-May-10 11:58:05 BST)
So my questions are:
Has any one bought a similar item to this which includes everything? was it cheaply made, poor carbon filter ?
Do the carbon filters eliminate all odor ?
How loud is the fan that extract the hot air ? quiet enough to sleep with ?
Would the extracted heat be too unbearable to sleep in ? (make the room to hot)
All advice wanted and appreciated !!

A lot depends on the specific type of fan and filter they're providing. Some can actually get a little loud and some are flat out inadequate. I had to build a box to quite down a vortex once. I'm thinking heat however in the rest of the room will not be a problem unless the tent catches on fire, heheh.

Whats up??
It comes with a 4" fan and a carbon scrubber... I have a 4" ecoplus fan and if its on fully without a speed controller its loud and annoying. Constant like wind noise lol. It will take some getting used to if you are sleeping next to the tent.
I dont know about the exact parts that comes with but i will tell you the problem im having now..
I am also using a tent with a 600w HPS. The hood is aircooled. For a trial run I used that same 4" fan without a scrubber to extract the hot air from the hood. Definitely wasnt good enough in my situation. I turned it off at 90 degrees on my temp monitor.
I now have to vent the hood into the attic with a much bigger fan.
I first tried exhausting into the room the tent was in... WAY too hot to even sit in the room. But where I live the temps are very high outside so it doesnt help.
Your hood is not air cooled so its probably going to get hotter in there than with a sealed hood. I wouldnt vent into the room unless it had AC on. PLUS you have to take into account that the carbon scrubber is going to restrict your airflow so the heat will be leaving the tent slower and might build up faster.
Just some thoughts... hope I could help and good luck!

Cheers guys but looks like my dream of having an hps and a tent aren't going to happen :(

I have similiar problems right now. I am only running a 400w MH, but it is putting off about as much heat as I'd want to have to deal with. I have been trying to find a fan that is quiet enough for me to use in my apartment without fear of a neighbor hearing it (I have a tent in my closet). I put a blower in there and it was way too loud so I went and got an inline 4" fan the other day. It is way to loud too. I just ordered a speed controller for it today so hopefully I can turn it down to the point where it is quiet enough. I just hope it still moves enough air. Without good ventilation in that tent I'll cook my plants with that 400w MH. I had to pull that light out and put my 150w HPS in there for now so I don't over heat the tent until I get my speed controller in and can reinstall my fan. Luckily my plants are only a couple weeks old so that light is more than enough to cover them right now.

Hey DaDuck..
Have you looked up any methods of noise control for fans? Lots of stuff... One method im going to apply in my current grow is hanging the fan from the ceiling with chains so that the vibrations transfered are minimized. Because I also have neighbors on the other side of a wall in a townhouse.
You can also build a box and install the fan inside the box and hang the box. Even put rubber matting on the inside of the box to kill sound waves!

i hung mine with bungee cords, less vibration transmitting through to the studs its hanging from.

Makes sense but my problem with the vortex wasn't vibration. It was just freakin too loud for comfort. Didn't need a visitor asking why I left the vacuum on in the closet :) Certainly wouldn't have wanted to try to sleep in a room with it!

I used the rubber matting lightly to prevent vibration but I didn't want to over do it causing a lack of adequate air circulation around the motor. Guess muting sound waves was an added benefit but then I didn't try it without the padding to listen to the difference! I'm too lazy. But hey the house never burned down.
(Probably have the building inspectors and contractors out there shitting their collective britches about now).

Oh, sorry. Didn't catch that post.
That's gotta suck. But fuck it; who needs a friggen tent anyway?!!! Next option is a small room in the house!!!

I built an enclosed space 3'x4'x6' and had great success with cfl's when i got hps my nightmares began and it is heat related... I use the space now for cloning starting and mothers with the cfls at 65k and it is wonderful for that purpose...

Hey Char,
We've got a tent, not a complete setup, but got pretty much same as what's described in what you been looking at. We haven't transferred to te tent yet, but have had all the gear working to assess noises etc. We have hung the extractor fan using those cable-tie things (I call them tie-wraps and get shouted at that they ain't called that lol) and the noise isn't too bad really. No worse than having a little fan on beside your bed during the summer....so wil take a few nights to get used to. I mean, people live right next to railway lines or below flight paths and become immune to the noises! But the fan noise isn't enough to worry about neighbors hearing :)
On the aspect of the heat...our solution is to get some white tumble drier hosing and attach it to the end of the foil hose.....stick some white women's tights over the end of white hose (lol) to prevent bugs climbing in, and pop it out the window.....nobody thinks anything odd about seeing a tumble drier house hanging out a window! You can also get some odor things to pop in the hose too to mask any smells, can't remeber what they're called right now, but saw them on ebay too.
Using a tent system (or any kind of grow system) when you have neighbors and not being in a legal MMJ state takes a bit of immagination in reducing unwanted attention, but it can be done, so don't let it put you off getting a tent. We're on our first grow, so very mch trial and error and hoping we don't screw up, but have done a lot of research and messing about with our stuff before getting seeds.....just didn't realise how quick these babies grow lol.
Hope this helps you a bit man, wouldn't want to see you put off by a few little teething problems! :smokin:

Thanks flyini. Practically the tent still wouldnt be great in my room but i have to a comprimise .This is going to be to grow in my current grow space but using LED's. Im going to invest in a nice set so hopefully the ywork properly ! Do appreicate the info about the tents and will bare it in mind when i move house. :)

I think using LED is going to greatly simplify any heat problems you may have.
