Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
hey everyone, i am attaching a picture of some leaves... They are from my Northern Lights Female that has been flowering for a week and a half..
The leaves are pretty crispy.. and yellow with brown..
please help, I want to figure out what is wrong ASAP so that I may correct it...
I am following the fox farms nutes schedule and the soil is just plain old home depot inside potting soil for seedings (no-nutes)
she is in a 2 gallon pot (square) and I water with a pint of water every 2 - 3 days (when I stick my finger in it and it comes out dry ;) )
Thanks all!

what is the ph of the runoff water?
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Thank you for the reply,
according to my ph strips it is around 6.5
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
dont let ya plants sit in the runoff, and whats the PH of ya tap water..
mick.
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
I never really water then enough for run off, if there is some run off, its very minimal.
PH of Tap water is in the high 7s.. like 7.5 or so...

Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Is this affecting the whole plant or just a couple of fan leaves at the bottom?
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Started at the first 2 at the bottom, and then moved up to node 2 and then it is now at node 3
I am finishing up week 2 of flower at this point...

Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
It is fairly normal to get a few of the older lower leaves die and drop off even at this earlyish stage. My plants are really healthy but I have 3 lower leaves on each plant that look awful (yellow, brown spots etc..). In general old growth is old news, as long as new growth is unaffected it usually isn't an issue or a sign of any major problems. It would be nice if you could post a pic of whole plant though, just to make sure.
Also if you need re-assuring visit a few of the other grow logs, you will see plenty of pics of yellow leaves on fat budded plants.

Thanks PhatJay for the replies..
I attached a picture of the full plant..
I have also attached a picture of yet another problem I am having with one of my Ice plants that is still in veg.. It just (over night) started showing little spots on the leaves.. there are no pests on or around the plant,
Maybe this will help diagnose the first plant a little? if now what is going wrong with my girls?!
Thanks again

I can see why you are concerned now. :( You need to fill in a troubleshooting form. The more expert growers won't look at some plant problems unless you have filled in the troubleshooting form, because it is very easy to mis-diagnose a problem if you don't have the right information.

Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Best way to get a good answere is to fill out the form.for starters what is the npk ration of the home depot soil and. What are its exact contents.with little info and pics to show the issues 9nly it looks like over fertilization.u shouldn't have any yellowing this early into flower. this is a human error.and easily fixable.flush now with p.h corrected water and lower your feeding schedule if it gets worse then up the food .

BTW, I just checked on them for the first time today and the dots on the leaves are moving up to the top, so the bottom leaves have lots of dots and top leaves are starting to show them as well..

Just checked my other room, where I have another plant flowering and its worse!!!
*sigh* help me I am scared my babies are going to die..
here is a pic

Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
All the corrective actions I would take are. As follows.1.transplant now .a 2 gallon pot for that size plant isn't big enough.2.check your tds before u add anything to the. Water.if its to low add cal mag.sphagnum peat moss naturally leaches calcium and magnesium.3.get your p.h.issues in check.there is a good artical around here knob run off and corrective actions. Also make sure the pots there going in have adequite drainage.

Thank you for the reply!
do I really have to transplant? If this thing gets any bigger I wont have a place to put it.. was hoping by keeping it in this pot that it would be ok?
I don't know where to get cal-mag here.. I have looked everywhere (local nurseries, head shop, home depot, lowes) can't find it.. Is there anything else i can use to add calcium and mg? like maybe some Epsom salt?
I will check out the ph article you mentioned
Thank you

Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
I went out and bought a cheep soil PH probe.. not sure how acurate it is but it showed one of my plants (the one with the most dots on the leaves) to be 4.0! ouch... the other ones that are having issues showed 5.8 and the ones that are good are showing 6 - 6.2
could this just be a PH issue?
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Definitely transplant into a bigger pot, preferably with some quality soil and perlite. I'm not that familiar with making mixes, so I can't really comment on where it went wrong. If it's been a while since your last transplant, could be that the buffers ran out.
You can try diluting some crushed dolomite lime and watering with that to try and bring the ph of the soil back up. But the transplant will also help a lot.
Why are those CFL's so far away? I'd say 4 in. max...
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Can I repot during flower?
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Yeah. I do it so that the buffers don't run out at the last stages. The buffers usually last for 6-8 weeks.
-
Yellow and Brown crispy leaves!
Ok thanks, I will try to find some 3 gallon pots.. I ususally repot every 2 weeks.. least up to now, they have been in these pots for 2 weeks now (repotted the day I put them to flower)
This is what i did
Took the top layer (about an inch) of old soil out of the pot, I then got some distilled water and put a new layer of fresh dirt on top, the soil tester showed it at 6.5 ph.. I then put a layer on top then flushed the whole thing, the soil at the root ball is now @ about 6 ph so it did raise a little.. going to leave them be for now and hope!
Thanks all! I will update in a few

So bigtop,
I've been pondering, how do you repot with a scrog? It must be difficult to manage. Insights?

With 1 plant it's not too difficult, I get my wife to help me. With more than 1 plant in a single screen, I'd say you need 1 person for each pot and an extra just to coordinate
Sorry for the hijack batlin :sorry1:

It is a little early to be positive on my part yet, but this is exactly my issue. The little brown dots moving up.
FIRST your plant will be okay and make good meds.
Second, I am beginning to come to the belief this is a "Cal/Mag" problem as that is what I am adding to my water and the leaves seem to be doing more of a general yellowing - as they should -as they reach maturity.
This has been a 3 week process. Now, along with that, my water PH is like 6, I use RO. Adding the CalMag really lowers the PH and I have to use PH up (sodium bicarbonate) to control that. With your pH, you probably will not need to buffer it. Currently I am adding 1 teaspoon of Cal/Mag (derived from molasses) in 5 gallons of water.
I do not get runoff either. I only transplant one time in the flower room and it has no effect or even worsens the problem (FFOF).
So slowly you might consider such a treatment. The response has been slow as I am hesitant to use many buffers (salts). Looking for the minimum to resolve the issue and so far - over time - it seems to be helping more than anything else I have tried.
Link to other recent thread, same issue....seems more common.

Too little light, too far away. Sativa's can be a bitch if using CFL's since the plants tend to get so tall. CFL light only extends about 6-8 inches, so lower region of the plant will suffer greatly.

Likely rootbound. Let the soil dry enough to carefully check the roots.

You can not check runoff ph using test strips or drops that have a color-coded result. The tinting of the runoff skews the results. (same thing after adding nutrients to the ingoing water) Definatelly do not chase your ph around or make any changes based on your runoff numbers. They are wrong.

Never use nutrients to balance your ph. You are overdosing them tremendously, and likely screwing-up the ph instead of fixing it. Fox Farms was kind enough to provide you a weekly feeding schedule that works very well. Follow it. (plain ph'd water inbetween feedings only if necessary)
Get some phDown by General Hydroponics, or a similar phDown product. White vinegar or lemon juice as a temporary ph adjuster, but only for short periods. But get the right tool for the job you've already started.

Ditch the Superthrive. It isn't necessary, doesn't work well with other nutrient sources, and can do more harm than good. FF Grow Big and Tiger Bloom each have almost all the micronutes you'll need. In flower, the only additive I give is unsulfered molasses at 1 tsp per gallon of properly ph'd water, once a week. In my garden, molasses replaces all budswell products, carbo-load products and CalMag products, since that's what they are made from anyway.

I know it was cheap, but I got a soil PH probe from Lowes/ home depot and i figured even if it isnt accurate it should be actuate relative to a known PH right?
I think I need to UP the ph on my plans since they are all in t 4-5 range :(
I registered almost exactly 7.0 for distilled water..
I will read up on Molasses..
OH and I made a typo on how far my CFLs are away form my plans..
The plant that I have in flower are about an 1-2 inches (some even closer and got burnt) form the lights, and my veg plans are anywhere from 1-4 inches away.. dont know where I got the 6-12 :-P
Thanks all!

Watering plants properly involves watering the plant until the water begins to flow out of the bottom of the pot, aka runoff.
Also, regarding the pH levels of your water for irrigation, they should be within 6.0 - 6.3 organically. (Slightly acidic)

1. Your Container "might be" too small.
2. They appear underfed; lacking Nutrients!
3. What is Your Soil; "PH"?
4. What is Your "Lighting Source"? MH Bulb? What Wattage?
5. Rather than "water" when dry, consider "feeding" 2-3 X's daily, and we're not talking anywhere near a pint!
6. ANY "Source" of CO2?
