Plan to Grow 16 Indoor plants... How much space and How Many Lights/Type and Watts?

Trying to do as much research as possible and any help would really be appreciated...

i do 16 plants in a 3 x3 tray and under 450w of LED light so i am probably differnet than most but soon many will be doing more and more with LED as it has made great strides in the development of stronger diodes and hitting the main lighting spectrums for flowering :jointsmile:

You might be going about this all backwards...
Would need to know the dimensions of your growroom, how well ventilated it is (or how well ventilated it can be) can you light-proof the room? Is this a stealth grow, or are you in your own home? (or your parents home) What size pots, how much headroom, what kind of plants? (sativa dominate, indica dominate or autoflower)

I'm guessing this isn't a medical grow, and you have no experience...so why 16 plants specifically? Why not 12, 24 or 36?

It will be my own place and I don't know that's why I'm asking.

It will be a medical grow but I need to grow 16 plants so I need to know how much space I need to clear out for plants.

I asume I could start in a smaller space with fewer lights when I first get the starter plants but I need to know ideally how much space I will need and how many lights, the type of lights and the watts to optimally grow 16 plants.

Anything you could share would be helpful.

Just assume I have the space just need to know how much to clear out and how to optimally setup that space.

You can start with a closet grow or a spare room. I've seen smaller growtents, but 16 plants is out of the question there. Too small.

A closet would best be a dedicated space for growing only. Clothes absorb the odors in it's closet, and can be a hastle at an airport, lol.

You can start with compact fluorescent lights and expand to HPS lighting for flowering, or some are using LED growlights.

Your best bet is to visit the Closet / Cabinet Growing forum or the growlog section for other ideas and situations you may encounter with each.

I veg in a half-closet indoors with CFL's, and flower in a seperate shed outdoors under HPS light(s). (two seperate rooms for a continuous harvest)

Then there's how you'll grow. to me, soil is easiest. Quality potting mix is readily available everywhere. Or you could go with hydroponics. Not my cup of tea personally, but other's will defend the technique to thier deaths.

Then there's nutrients. Get the best 2 or 3 part nutrient pack you can afford. Look around, you'll see what's most common. Some have a handy schedule to follow that's nearly fool-proof.
Don't fall for buying additives till you know how to use your nutrients, and know what to look for.

Then there's the additional equipment. You'll need to test your ingoing ph, and later your runoff ph, so a ph pen is optimal (get the calibrating solution for accuracy) There's also ph test kits for freshwater aquariums and botany. Both work until the liquid has any color, which skews results. When you Google your local water ph, go online to find the phUp or phDown you'll need to keep ph in range. If on municipal water, check what kind of chlorine they use to kill bacteria.

If you go hydro, an EC meter or pen is a must, as are other tools I don't have or use...so can't say what else you'd need.


Assorted sizes of pots from seedling size to 3 or 5 gallon nursery pots. Transplanting often helps replenish soil buffers and adds rootspace when necessary.

Then there's the seeds....

All of this is a lot at first glance, and you'll have to figure-out how and where you'll grow. Holler back when you've made some preliminary choices. :thumbsup:

I too have the 16 plant limit. I am allowed 4 mature and 12 veggies.

My setup is as follows:

10x12 room.
A small cfl germination station by hydrofarm (What most of my stuff is)
A 2x4 Ebb/flow garden under a 400w MH
A 3x3x7 grow tent w/2x2 Ebb/flow garden under a 400w HPS
Several small fans

The tent holds 4 plants comfortably, which is what I will use to flower.
The other garden will hold about 6-8 plants while my germination station will be clones. My plan is to prepare 6 or so plants while my 4 are flowering, and use 4 of those to flower next for every 8-9 week harvest.

Wash, rinse, repeat. :)

I would do 16 plants on a 3x3 tray.
Thats my style.
It could vary depending on what kind of strain it is and what growing style.
I would build a grow room that fits a 3x3 tray.

Then again I know people that grow two plants on a 3x3 tray.

if you want max yield from 16 plants in one harvest than i suggest 9000watts HPS in a 20'x20' room with 12 foot ceilings and a dedicated cooling system.be prepared to spend 1000's of dollars on equipment/supplies/electricity. expect a harvest of at least 16 pounds and be prepared for criminals with guns to kick your door in and take it all away. seriously.... PLEASE start smaller per Rusty's advice as it sounds like you have little experience at growing indoors.

just do a seperate room, 2-4x8 tray, with 8-5gl bckts and soil in each one. and 4-600's. invest- $1500 to 4500. 4500 would be with all the great gadgets. You could cheap out and it will work fine, just provide enough light. You could veg with 4-125w cfl's or w/e.

Yeah, always consider experience only guarantees greater success. If you are not that experienced- start smaller. And if people are/can be a threat consider investing in security devices and protection, although if somewhen comes into mine when im not home will atleast lose a hand and possibly their most precious, I see it as you or them, gotta be DOWN because when you have seconds left, cops are always minutes away...

That's only if you have too though, always consider the inevitable. I think a matter we don't talk alot about is security but not for our medicine but on how we can better protect our homes. I mean only because we grow, it doesn't make us exempt of protecting ourselves and possibly our medicine specially if it's done under all legality. Sorry, im not trying to high jack your thread on guns or such, but just saying keep a watchful eye as many can be watching you. Start your grow only when you built enough confidence and a effective system that works best for you, as anything that can go wrong most likely will go wrong depending on all around conditions. Depends how much you want to harvest in a certain time frame (per month, per year, etc.)

Also depends on your budget...

Are you going to buy clones, or seeds, or have a mother plant? (Do mother plants count as part of the 16?)

Sativa or Indica dominant? Any preferred strains?

Lets say he already had a mother plant already and was raising 16 clones off of her how much space would he need to raise them all up together. Assuming they would all eventually land in 5 gallon buckets. How much space in between them and whats the l/w/d of the grow room he would need. Plus what type of lighting would he need to bring them all up together until they are all nice, mature, and ready for harvest? I think that's pretty close what he's askin. I was gonna post a similar question but I supposed I'll find the answer here in this thread.

That's a lot of soil to be lugging around... And clones in 5 gals would be pretty big. All depends on $$$, wattage and skill. Of course, wattage isn't the right term, but with a decent setup you can get .5 to 1.0 grams per watt with HID's. The strain will also play a big part.

Sorry to not answer the question, but really there are so many possibilities, and so many restrictions (budget, wattage for grow, size of grow room) that haven't been mentioned. For what you describe, you can go anywhere from 4 x 250w in a 5ft x 5ft, or even 4 x 1000w in a 10ft. x 10ft. space.

I hope this fits into this thread and I hope I'm not highjacking anyones thread, but maybe it fits in. I'm considering switching over to Aeroponics, but not sure how close I can put my plants. The ones I've grown so far haven't been straight up and down with one big straight bud, rather abit on the bushy side. I'm guessing they should be about a 5 gallon bucket apart from each other to grow from little girls into fine stinky ladies with abundant budz. Anyone wanting to chime in would be greatly appreciated. :thumbsup:

For a 16 plant operation I would agree with a closet grow:
Veg room of about 2'x4.25' could use 2 or 3 sets of T12 hanging shop lamps @ 80 watts per pair.

Flower room of about 2'x3' could use a 400 watt HPS, or maybe only 250 if you want to skimp.

You could flower 4-6 small plants at each round while vegging the next 6 plants grow from clones and possibly even have room for a mother and a few "spares".

Don't forget exhaust ventilation which is just as important as lighting. You'll need a BIG fan like a 6" in-line 400-500 cfm with 6" air cooled hood, 6" carbon filter and some place (like an attic or outside) to vent that hot spent air. Don't forget the misc items like trays, tables, pots (get pots first and build around them), circulation fans, Fox Farm nutes, Ph tester/adjuster, soil, reflective mylar, yada yada yada.

You are looking about at least $1K to do it right.

Having guns in your possession while also having (illegal) drugs is a felony much worse beyond the weed itself which may have been only a misdemeanor. If you were under the influence while "defending your home" with lethal force you'd need the Johnnie Cochran dream team of lawyers to get you off. Do your research and don't be stupid.
