Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
So, what is the best way to make hash for the average medicinal grower who just has a few plants and a bit of extra trim?
It seems like bubble hash would be a good idea, but aren't those bubble bags like $100+. Probably a good investment, but not when you're broke. Can you get them locally?
What are some other ways to make fine quality hash on the cheap? Not interested in any butane. Was thinking the cheapest way would be just sifting sugar leaves and pressing kif... but maybe that's not the best quality.

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
i ordered my bubble bags from
bubblefilterbags.com
they have the original bubble bags and wacky bags.
i ordered a 5 bag kit of wacky bags for around 80$
they work great.
save your money for bubble bags or wacky bags or any bags with propper micron filters. You will be so happy when you get them.
I love spinning hash.
here is some quick tips
for full melt:
use only fresh trim and bud. NO FAN LEAVES!!!!
freeze trimmings and bud
do not use a drill or hand blender, only a big spoon, i use a wooden one. i spin for about 5 min, soft and easy. let settle 30min
most strains will leave you with full melt in the 73 micron bag.
For quantity (that still bubbles but wont melt):
use methods you find on internet.
with drill or hand blender.
you get alot more but I never seen any melt with this method; only bubble.
i love bubble hash.
there is many other ways to make hash.
in my opinion bubble is the best. i am sure there are people that do not agree with me.
do a google search for how to make hash you will find many ways.

^Thanks! I really appreciate that info! I'm gonna start looking into bubble bags and the method I think...

you will be so happy with the bubble bags.
I was in the same situation as you, i grow in a 2x2 tent for medicinal purposes. At first I did not want to spend the money for them, but when I got them I was so happy.
bubble hash is an art, style, science. Not just something to do with trim.
remember if you want quality- take it slow and easy, no crazy drill or egg beater spinnin.
quantity-get crazy with a drill.
happy spinning!!!!
post some pics of your hash after making it.

I got a set on ebay for $60 I believe. They work great.
there is an easier / free way if you are small time (i.e. start w/an oz or so at a time) and all you need is a coffee filter.
here's what I do...
you need a blender. nice size cocktail one works great. something that could crush ice. Take an oz of bud or great trim (no fan leaves, stems, etc) cleaned, ground, put ice in the blender. less than 1/4 full. pour (spread) your herb on top of the ice. let it sit for a minute to cool. Have a jug of ice water on the ready. add enough water to cover the ice, and crank the blender up.
If it gets stuck (smoothie effect) turn off the blender, add some water, stir, repeat. the shit should get ground up. A few minutes of blending the herb smoothie.
I pour this all in a tall thin glass container and wait for the ice to finish melting and the goodness to fall to the bottom. get out the crap that floated to the top with a slotted spoon, getting as much as I can (goodness sinks, veg rises). Then, I carefully siphon out the water above the settled material, except for 1/2 inch or so above the sediment. The remainder, I run through a mesh strainer (was told a hop bag works great for this step) then I put through a coffee filter. I use the coffee machine to hold it, and catch the runoff in a coffee pot. be meticulous and you end up with some nice shit. Good bud (Jacks Cleaner) yielded 8g/Z.
Take the stuff in the filter, scrape it out onto a plate or something to dry, then press and enjoy
good luck!

What kind of quantity did you get in comparison to dried buds (assuming you used only trim)?
Yeah, definitely sounds like it's worth it.

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
if you use the drill:
for every 100g of trim you will get 10g of hash
about 5g will be bubble
if you do not use a drill and aim for the best:
for every 100g of trim
5-6 grams of hash
1-2 grams full melt
what I do is 2 runs
first run I aim for full melt and then the second run I aim for good bubble hash.
when it comes down to it:
100g of trim = 5 to 10 grams of good bubble
you will get different grades.
some full melt some half melt some just good bubble and some funky stuff thats good for making hash butter.
-
Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
good trim works great.
the only thing you do not want to use is fan leaves.
you can get full melt with only trim.
fan leaves will leave you with green hash. you don't want that.

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
I heard the cheap bubblebags from china work fine except for the stitching will separate. Thats why I mix in a seperate bucket, plus it never settles in the bags. A little full melt on top of northern lights completely kicked my ass last night, no back pain at all :stoned:
-
Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
I was lucky enought to pick up a 5 gallon bubble bag set locally for around 200. Made plenty of batched with it too. Just like homeboy said, no fan leaves = full melt.
-
Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
If you don't have time to make the bubble the day you have fresh trim it works really well to freeze your fresh trim... fresh trim+good sweet leaf trim=full melt bubbly goodness..

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
Hey guys... just wanted to update. Looks like these Sprung bags are really nice quality...
Sprung Bags, Multi-Purpose Filter Bags
I'd heard some bad things about the Wacky bags and Ebay bags, primarily related to the stitching as mentioned above. These were only $80 for a 5gal, 5-bag set (220, 160, 110, 73, 25).
So I had a couple questions I was hoping someone could help me with.
-Can you keep the trim frozen indefinitely without quality loss? Do you have to use it within a certain time period of freezing? Was just curious because with a staggered harvest, some trim might sit in the freezer for 2 weeks until the last plant is harvested?
-If using fresh, frozen popcorn buds should you cut them up before making bubble? Seems like this might be a good idea to expose greater surface area and make trich extraction easier... what do you think?
I guess that's pretty much it. I was also wondering what you guys think of doing separate runs for each unique strain... I'd like to do this, but if you have only 1-2 plants of each strain you'd probably need to combine them all together to get a respectable yield. However, I was thinking it might be a good idea to at least separate out indica-heavy plants VS. sativa-heavy plants to at least maybe get a qualitative difference in your two different hash runs....:rastasmoke:

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
As per the question about different runs for different yields...If you have a small enough bubble bag (1 gallon) you could probably get away with using only amounts of trim, but you might need more than 1-2 plants worth. To give you an idea, my 5 gallon was used to make hash from an 18 plant harvest. I believe it was 2 freezer bags completely full, and I could have probably used 2 or 3 times that much.
I was thinking of selling my 5 ga. bag for around $125 . Its seen some use, but still works like a charm.

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
FILTERBAG.com
They have 35, 55, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, and 800 micron bags for around $70 or so
Made to fit a five gallon bucket.
----------------
These another company that makes great bags, cheaper than Bubblebags, better made, but not as cheap as above. I just can't remember the name right now.

I remember!
Payload Bags
Though it looks like the price has gone up.
Much better bags than anything else out there. IMHO

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
Well, got my Sprung bags the other day and I was disappointed to see a big "Made in China" sticker on them. I thought they were made in US, but oh well, they seemed to have done the trick...
I was pretty disappointed with yield... in fact as I was scraping the bags I was pissed. But after it dried up and I realized how good it was I was a little less upset. I had basically a shoebox full of fresh, frozen trim... seemed like a lot but when considering it was never dried it was probably less than an oz (28g) for sure... probably closer to 10-15g. Anyone ended up getting about 1g off of the 73u bag that is NICE! I don't have enough experience to say whether it's full melt or not, but it seems close... definitely semi-melt. It seems to all bubble and melt, but then it dried back up. This shit bubbles for 5+ seconds after you pull the lighter away!! Has the consistency and appearance almost of a Brachs caramel...
Anyway the Sprung bags seem pretty good. I beat the shit out of them mixing and they held up well. Time will tell:rasta::rastasmoke:.... Bags used were 220, 110, 73, 25
220 - Trash
110 - OK bubble, but not melt (~0.25g)
73 - Bubbly, tasty, melty nice stuff (~1g)
25 - Slightly green-tinted hash, not sampled yet, probably use for cooking (~0.25g)

I used about twice as much trim as you and yielded 4 grams dry of 73u. Depends on how frosty the trim is, I suppose.

I'd like to hear about this as well.
However about the separation of strains. I'm with you on that. I've had hash from Strawberry Cough that worked, and tasted, like Strawberry Cough. Then I had some bubble (it was cheap) that seamed to change flavors and effects as I worked through the gram.:wtf:
I still wonder how long it could stay undisturbed in the freezer though.

You can freeze it indefinitely. I've heard its better to freeze in a paper bag than a tupperware or something though.
Most of the bubble you find in dispensaries is just mixed together crap! The bubble I made was the best-tasting hash I've ever had. And I got a gram out of what was probably less than 10 grams of trim after further examination.
Unless you have a bigger grow with several plants I would suggest doing all strains together.
-
Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
have you ever heard of the "gumby" method? minimal $ involved. no bags needed. gravity pretty much does it all. all you need is a power drill, a paint stirrer for the drill, a couple 5 gallon buckets, a kitchen strainer, a length of tubing and some some ice.

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
Was a little better. Got a total of 3.6g of melty hash.... 2.2g of FULLMELT from the 73u.... and 1.4g of SEMIMELT from the 110u bag. Not too shabby!
Here's a nice little pic of the 73u the day after the run.
Have a couple questions concerning drying/curing. What do you guys do for drying and curing of bubble? The first run, I pressed it and let it air-dry for 24 hours. Then I froze it and crumbled it (ehh it's hard to crumble... more like I just broke it into smaller chunks) and let it sit in an open jar for 1 week, smoking pieces of it the entire time. So actually at 1 week I only had a few hits left, but it seemed to solidify pretty well and lose it's stickiness! This time I did the same thing, but I only let it sit "crumbled" for 2-3 days and then rolled it into a snake. It didn't seem to harden up as well and it's still really sticky. Maybe I'll crumble it again....
Lastly, a smoking question. When I put a nice little pancake on top of a bowl of herb and light, it just bubbles insanely and melts away into the herb. Once it's all melted down, the top of the bowl catches on fire!! This happens almost every time without fail, so I'm sure you hash heads know what I'm talking about. Now, I always dab the flame with my lighter after a second and put it out. I still get a great hit. But I'm wondering if you're supposed to leave that flame burning? What do you guys do? I guess if you can handle a hit as huge as you get from when it's flaming, more power to ya!
Peace,
LP

OK, I'm wondering if this 110u is full-melt also. I guess I'm not so clear on what constitutes full-melt. The 110u definitely seems to melt completely in a furious eruption of bubbles. However, it seems afterwards that there's a bit more residue than the 73u. It's a brownish blackish porous hard residue/ash... and it tastes kinda funky on the last hit or two. Is this still full-melt?? Can something be full-melt and still leave a residue? Maybe the residue is from it not being fully dry or something?
This 73u bubbles like mad... I haven't seen a single clear dome yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if I do...:stoned::stoned:

Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
OK this seems to be the best definition I've come across yet for full-melt, simple but it works:
Full melt means it keeps melting/bubbling till it is gone
So based on that I'd say the 110u is only semi-melt... part of it doesn't really melt, but it ultimately burns away to ash. But it actually seems to be just as good...;)
-
Bubble bags locally OR cheaper hash methods?!?!
Sorry I can't be of any help. I'm not sure of the definitions either but what you've posted sounds correct to me, at following your logic! I've always helped friends make hash, but haven't never experimented with my own stash. Have had a patient asking about it so no doubt I'll be investing in bags soon myself.

I have been using "paint strainer" bags that can be found in any home paint store, for less then $10 each. I usually just use a dried shake extraction, but know of people who use them for ice water extration.
Much cheaper then true bubble bags and work equally well.

ok, maby a stupid question, but doesn't freezing it rupture the cells, that's why you don't freeze your meds, it degrades the quaility. so wouldn't the same be true for the trim? i know it helps with the extraction, but anybody notice a difference between using fresh vs frozen?

Only time I have freezed my trim/bud is when I'm going to be making tincture. Though I don't any more. Didn't seem to make much of a difference but that was also when I first started to try to make tincture. Might give it a go again as my method has changed since then and I have it better dialed in.
