Whats up everyone....
Got a friend who knows a guy selling a HidHut Supernova enhanced spectrum 270w lamp that has only two grows under it. He is selling it for $750.
Anybody have any experience with this lamp? Think its worth $750?? Its like a $1400 dollar lamp if you buy it new. I would like to use it in maybe a 5'x5' area. Comments welcome!!!

if you were going to use this for grow only...it has the 1w LED's
i have not seen a complete grow using the 1w diodes that was any good in flower...the ones i use are 3w diodes and i get good results:thumbsup:
when LED's are concentrated into a small tight pattern they do not cover what they say...you need to raise the light to get the coverage ands when you do that you lose effective light penetration....which is why i like how the ones i use spread the LED's over a 4" x 40" window making a larger light footprint for your dollar!:thumbsup:
well i'm not an LED vet and i'm sure one (or several will chime in) but i'll give my 2 cents anyway.
i hardly believe that light is worth $750, much less $1400. it's listed on HID's site for $1200.

it says it produces more light than a 1000W at a fraction of the cost. while 270W is ~1/4 the power consumption of the 1000W, it's not as great as the creative writing leads one to believe. i highly doubt the lighting it produces is more. i can't find any detailed specs on the unit, but it probably uses 1W diodes. it probably contains ~250 diodes i bet with the rest of the power being consumed by the driver and the fans.
the second quote is even scarier. how in the hell can a light that consumes 270W run at 1/8 the typical energy consumption of a 1000W? i can do math and those numbers don't add up. for the price of the LED you can get 2x 1000W w/air cooled hoods and the fan needed to run them and grow much better buds.
and one final quote that i found on another site that HID decided to exclude from it's own:
"NOTE: Additional spectrums of light are required for maximum performance during the flowering stage. This can be achieved by overlapping with traditional fluorescent or HID garden lighting."
so even if you supplimented with fluros you are still gonna be using closer to 500W of power. and good luck trying to cover a 5' x 5' area with the LED or with the LED and fluros.

i should have known that str8 would be in here pumping his LED knowledge! they are getting closer my friend, very close. i think 5W diodes will be when we really start to see some nice stuff and the phasing out of HIDs.Quote:

So whats a good LED lamp in 180-250w range?
I know I can get lots of HIDs for the price of an LED but the monthly bill will be much more including the fans to cool them. Just not sure of what I want to do for lightning in my new area... hmmm.

Sounds like marketing since I'm not aware of any horticultural HID bulbs running 270*8 = 2160 watts. I know of a few Xenon projector bulbs running that range but they most certainly aren't HID, they're bare-electrode arc-discharge, and they're not meant for horticultural use (though they could be used for it.)
Also wondering how they're getting much of any lumens rating when they're dealing with monochromatic light that isn't weighted by the lumens used for illuminance, because lumens is weighted at 550nm - green. I don't see green bulbs in there.
The only good thing I see going for that panel is the adjustable red:blue knobs.
In the meantime, you wouldn't want a single panel anyways. Better to buy yourself a couple of cheaper 120-150w units and spread the light. Smaller panels spread out provide better coverage than a single panel in the center, plus better canopy penetration because of all the spread-out points of emission hitting the plants from different angles.
well said khyb....that is main reason i am happy with mine is the spread of the LED's giving light at many different angles.:thumbsup:

Just for infos sake, the supernova has 7 different boards at different angles for different points of light like you had mentioned.
Well I was stretching my budget for the new grow area with that supernova so maybe I will just get some cheaper HID and fans and wait for better/cheaper leds. I wont be able to have a work area to build any for awhile because of my situation.

Not quite what I'm talking about. Different points of light mean 100% separate modules, not all built into the same unit, we're talking actual physical locations in the closet. Those LEDs are so close together that effective penetration capability is very low. The panels must be separate units in order to achieve better penetration.

I decided to just get some HID for now. I got a digital lumatek 600w ballast with a plantmax hps and a MH bulb with enhanced red spectrum added. Also a Xtrasun 6" air cooled hood. Picked up a 10" inline 950cfm fan and a speedster.
So hopefully in about 3 weeks I will be in sunny florida setting up my new grow.
Will be stuffing as many autos as I can in my tent under the hps and going to grow a mother of a strain not yet decided in another tent then toss clones under the hps after the autos are done.
